Re: Scoreboard - 22 years ago
Yeah, yeah... I was gonna say "the only league team to sweep them" -- apparently, I shoulda!by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 22 years ago
Technically, it's a 7-game winless streak vs. the Big Green -- there's a tie in there. (Yeah, I know, it doesn't sound a whole lot better, but as long as we're trying to be precise here...) So, the seniors are 1-6-1. (Nonetheless, I have a feeling that they'd like to get some payback against the only team to sweep them this season.) (In the meaningless-but-fun category: Cornell has now wby zg88 - Hockey
Re: COTY - 22 years ago
...And, by those standards, Schafer shoulda won it in '96! Payback!!! (In '96, IIRC, Cornell's increase was from pre-season 9th to the ECAC title (for a "+8". Although, if I'm not mistaken, the COTY award only considers regular season performance, so... Ehh, so what?! He shoulda won it that year, regardless, dammit!!!)by zg88 - Hockey
[Off-topic] Lax Update - 22 years ago
FINAL: Cornell 16, UMBC 4 After the Big Red's disturbing squeaker over Colgate earlier in the week, they really needed to make a statement today. Mission accomplished. They dominated every statistical category, and got balanced scoring from a lot of the youngsters on offense. Next up, Canisius.by zg88 - Hockey
Re: PWR after Friday - 22 years ago
> ...Findlay. (Who, by the way, lost to the US U-18 team 11-2 tonight.) In that game, in the 2nd period, the Under-18's had more goals (8) than Findlay had shots (6).by zg88 - Hockey
#1 defense - 22 years ago
The Big Red, after last night's game, overtake Mich. St. for the NCAA lead in team defense (1.73-1.76). Also, Underhill catches up with Ryan Miller's GAA (1.74) to move into a 2nd-place tie. LeNeveu's still comfortably in 1st place, of course (1.50), so now we've got a #1-#2 goaltending duo! (We won't talk about dropping out of the NCAA top 20 in team offense...) (Oh... one more thing..by zg88 - Hockey
Re: All-Ivy Teams - 22 years ago
Well, I figger it's one (or both) of the following: 1.) Games played. 2.) "Show me the points, baby!"by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Breakdown - 22 years ago
> ...can I get an official ruling as to whether the minigame in 88 actually counted as (blech) a full game? As much as I hate to say this, I'm pretty sure that the wicked retahhhded "mini-game" (all 10 minutes of it?!?!) did indeed count as a full game. Rrrrggghh... stoopid ECAC...by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
...And with the way the Big Red "O" has been playing, I'd expect a similar score this year... (...and that's assuming that Cynar can improve on his 31% save efficiency in the Colgate near-disaster... (maybe pre-season 1st-team All-America is the kiss of death?!?!)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: PSA: Do not climb over seemless glass - 22 years ago
> ...students climbing over the glass after the regular season win over Harvard in November 1995. I'm sure the Crimson players were saying to themselves, "HUH?!?!" > Hoping that someday, somehow, we get to tear down Penn's goalposts... ...and/or eat their mascot... assuming, of course, that it's a box of oats... (Umm... yeah... time for sleep...)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: A Modest DVD Proposal - 22 years ago
> ...the come from behind CU Hopkins game here... Hmmm... intriguing... are you referring to the 12-11 Big Red win over the Blue Jays in '77? (As far as I can tell, it's the only time we've ever beaten them here (at home) in the regular season.) I'd be highly interested in seeing that Providence game... or the '70 NCAA championship game... or any game w/Dryden in goal... or... or... )by zg88 - Hockey
Re: PSA: Do not climb over seemless glass - 22 years ago
That would be Unseamly®. (Hmmm... my spelling seemless good than it used to be...)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: sun article 03/05/02 - 22 years ago
Grady rules! Whether or not he measures up to (the, yes, legendary) Roy Ives doesn't interest me in the least. I feel fortunate to have him as our announcer. The testimonials above, regarding the general crapulence amongst his ECAC "peers", should only enhance our thankfulness! We could just as easily say, "Schafer's pretty good, but he's no Harkness", but why on earth wby zg88 - Hockey
Re: Championship gear - 22 years ago
> having the fact that we are better than harvard on a shirt is more than worth it. ...A "fact" which would become a challenge to defend if we somehow manage to lose to them at Lake Placid. I'd hold out for an "ECAC & Ivy League Champions '02" sweatshirt! (P.S. -- Long-sleeve t-shirts are, like, totally gay).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
> I hope nothing said here makes any difference to anybody who does this for a living -- if it does, I fear for their job. Huh?! You mean I coulda been getting PAID for all my posts?! Dammit, why didn't you say so sooner?! (And where can I get an application?)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
Well, the offense is good, by current ECAC standards -- it did finish in 1st place (as did the defense). (As for last year's offense... well... you don't wanna know...).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: @ union / Saturday, March 2nd - 22 years ago
Huh?! Onion outshot us 12-1 in the 3rd period?!?! (That's after the Big Red outshot them, 15-3 and 14-4, in the first two periods!)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
Fun li'l nuggets: Record when leading after two periods: 16-0-0 ...and... when behind after two periods: 0-3-0 Record in OT games: 0-3-2 Record when game's final goal-margin is 3 or greater: 11-0 Last time Cornell had a regular season without any losses by more than 2 goals (as was the case this year): 1978 (Same criteria as above, but for an entire season: 1970).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
And, to satisfy the "different eras" argument: Cornell finishes the ECAC regular season with a team GFA of 3.36 -- the 9th-worst-ever in team history. There... fair's fair... now we have balance, OK?!by zg88 - Hockey
End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
Here's a sweet one to get things started: Cornell finishes the ECAC regular season with a team GAA of 1.55 -- the 2nd-best-ever in league history!!! Only the '68 Big Red team (1.45) was better. (Yeah, I know, different eras... blah, blah, blah...) (Cornell now occupies 5 of the top 6 spots in that category ('68, '02, '67, , '70, '69)).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
I knew that our offense would be a big "question mark" coming into this season, but... geez... (I hope this wasn't our answer!) So much for making Swami's bold #7 ranking of the Big Red look magically wise... I guess we'll just have to pray for a repeat of the "miracle of 2000"...by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Who will we play next? - 22 years ago
Wow... the regular season's over, and 3 points separate #3-#10. I guess that would explain how Hahvahd, with their prevailing suckitude, could manage to finish as high as #3. Hmm.by zg88 - Hockey
Re: QuickTime audio fix for Windows - 22 years ago
Hmmm... that rings a bell... Was that the infamous "twistin' in the wind" bridge?? )by zg88 - Hockey
Re: "...is a joy forever." - 22 years ago
Woo-hoo!!! Beautiful!!! (I see the '72/'73==>'73/'74 "red-shift" has been fixed, as well!) (The graph format sure does make that '78-'84 period seem like a descent into hockey hell... yikes...)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: goaltending possibilities - 22 years ago
First of all... how the hell did you figger that one out?!?! (Where is there a good source of info. about Cornell goalie stats throughout history? (with rankings, etc.)) (I *really* need to get a newer media guide -- the rankings section of my '83 version is becoming painfully obsolete!!!) (EDIT: OK, I think I've solved that one... I finally did something that I shoulda done *long* ago --by zg88 - Hockey
Re: 20 win season - 22 years ago
> ...Cornell is currently tied for the 4th most points in their conference history: According to your list, wouldn't that be a tie for 5th? (Still VERY impressive, but with varying numbers of league games played per season (anywhere from 18 to 23 since '65), a ranking by winning percentage might be more "fair"...??) Cornell's league record was 17-3 in '71 (as well as in '72).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: 20 win season - 22 years ago
If the Big Red close out the regular season with a win tonight against Union, then they will finish with their best league record in 30 years! (17-3-2) ('72: 17-3)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Playoff possibilities - 22 years ago
> ...with Clarkson finally getting the UVM monkey off their back Friday, they have clinced home ice for the 206th straight time. (OK, actually, it's 14 straight seasons). ...And we won't talk about what happened the last time the Knights failed to earn a home ice berth...by zg88 - Hockey
Re: 20 win season - 22 years ago
...and breaking the somewhat-less-meaningful record for "total games played in a season", with 37... (I'm assuming the old record was 35 in '97?)by zg88 - Hockey
