Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Higgins - 22 years ago
If the award were for Most Valuable Rookie, then I think replacement value should be the guiding factor for choosing the award winner. Because it is Rookie of the Year, I believe that quality of play is more important.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Downs article - 22 years ago
I enjoyed reading that. Thanks for bringing the article to our attention.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: ECAC first round - 22 years ago
Like Keith, I am optimistic about the chances of a Big Red sweep this weekend. Cornell hasn't lost a home playoff game since 1988 and has done better in home playoff games than the regular season against its playoff opponents. 1989-90, Harvard, 0-2 RS, 2-0 QF 1990-91, Colgate, 1-1-1 RS (1-0-1 in ECAC), 2-0 QF 1993-94, Princeton, 1-0-1 RS, 1-0 prelim round 1995-96, Colgate 1-1 RS, 2-0 QF 1by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: NCAA Rules - 22 years ago
The offsides rule worked to our benefit in the first game of the Badger Showdown in December 1998. Ryan Moynihan preceded the puck into the offensive zone, and Cornell ultimately scored. Wisconsin coach Jeff Sauer wasn't happy with the non-call, but the assistant referee made the right call (as Mike Schafer pointed out in his postgame remarks).by cbuckser - Hockey

And how did Mr. Morris go an entire regular season without yanking his goalie?by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: sun article 03/05/02 - 22 years ago
I agree with Melissa, Jeff, Charles, Al, and Ken. Since my freshman year, I've appreciated how Arthur has contribued to make the hockey-watching experience at Lynah Rink special. His professionalism is unusual for college sports. Just listen to a game at Ohio State, or Colgate, to see what we could have been subjected to at every home game.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
Considering that the playoffs are one week away, expect detailed information about Matt's status to be kept close to the vest.by cbuckser - Hockey
players' ages - 22 years ago
On the other hand, Krzysztof Wieckowski didn't turn 18 until midway through his freshman year. Ryan Vesce, Ben Wallace, Greg Honrby, Matt & Mark McRae, and Shane Palahicky were 18 years old when they were freshmen. Dave LeNeveu is the only 18-year-old freshman on the team this year.by cbuckser - Hockey
waving goodbye - 22 years ago
Funny story: While BU was blowing us out on 11/21/95, Tony Bergin waved goodbye to Bob LaChance, who had punched bergin in the face and was getting taken to the BU dressing room for a punching major and game disqualification. Moments later, the officials sent Bergin to the showers because he also received a punching major and DQ.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Retired Numbers - 22 years ago
I'll add Mats Sundin to the list of active NHL players who wear #13 and are great hockey players. If we only consider those who have retired (so we can evaluate their entire careers), Ken Linseman was the best #13 I can think of. I'd put him in the good, but not great, category.by cbuckser - Hockey

A CP photographer took a great photo of Joe and Tyra Nieuwendyk admiring the gold medal.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
Having the last line change throughout the ECAC Tournament will be helpful, as will facing the play-in-game winner in the semifinals.by cbuckser - Hockey
reduced fares - 22 years ago
Other airlines may also have reduced their fares to Albany for the ECAC Championship weekend. Fares between San Jose and Albany on American, Continental, Northwest, United, and Delta are much lower than they were a week or two ago, as are fares between Oakland and Albany on Delta. The discounts from San Francisco aren't as impressive, and I haven't checked fares from other departure cities. Hoby cbuckser - Hockey
Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
The regular-season title is a phenomenal achievement, and I'm extraordinarily happy that Cornell won. The disappointment over tonight's tie, the understated reaction to clinching first place, and the concern over the team's play over the last five games are a testament to another impressive accomplishment: raising the expectations for this team.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: USA men vs. Russia - 22 years ago
The US won 3-2 though Russia had several chances to tie the game. US vs. Canada at 3pm EST on Sunday.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: cornell - 22 years ago
Yes, David is Sarah's brother. Kelly Hughes's cousins are Mark Messier and Jeff Finley, so Kelly has impressive bloodlines as well.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Canada-Belarus (SPOILER) - 22 years ago
It was an omission. Joe got ice time and won plenty of face offs.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: USA men vs. Russia - 22 years ago
USA up 3-0 on a Phil Housley power-play goal. After two periods, the US is outooting Russia 38-11.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: The Great One - 22 years ago
Here is Terry Jones's (Edmonton Sun columnist) take on Wayne Gretzky's press conference: I think it's unfortunate that Gretzky believed his tirade was necessary to fire up his team. I found his accusations toward the American media to be laughable; it is the Canadian media that, for at least the last year, has been obsessed with the performance of the Canadian hockey team. But, if Gretzky'by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Dartmouth, Feb 15 *game updates* - 22 years ago
Cornell 0, Dartmouth 0 after one period. Trevor Byrne hit a post midway through the first period.by cbuckser - Hockey

Re: Cornell makes NHL.com's "In the Slot" again - 22 years ago
Despite a few factual errors, I thought the article was enjoyable to read. In addition, the article portrayed the hockey program in a positive light to a target audience of NHL fans, most of whom have little familiarity with NCAA hockey.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: If you could choose... - 22 years ago
I agree with Jeff and Keith. I'd rather be one of the four best teams in the nation than the best team in a relatively weak conference. I'd prefer a trip to the Frozen Four even if we didn't win the Cleary Cup.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: goalies - 22 years ago
Mike Schafer has stated publicly that he has decided to go with one goaltender in the playoffs; he just hasn't revealed to the press which one he'll choose.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Princeton (Friday) - 22 years ago
Cornell 1, Princeton 0 after one period. Despite the score, Cornell did not carry the play in the first period. Brian McMeekin scored his first goal of the season. Mike Iggulden and Ryan Vesce got assists.by cbuckser - Hockey
Re: Frozen four - 22 years ago
Matt answered your question before I did. It's worth mentioning that the last ECAC team to reach the NCAA championship game is Colgate in 1990, and the most recent ECAC team to win the NCAA Championship is Harvard in 1989. Also, the 1994 Harvard team is the last Ivy team to advance to the Frozen Four.by cbuckser - Hockey
