Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: [OT] Sarah Hughes and Harvard? - 21 years ago
Yale's president has been leading a charge to get rid of early decisions. A lengthy article in The Atlantic made the case that early decisions really helped the chances of kids from good high and prep schools where the counselors pushed their students into applying for early decisions, where admissions criteria is usually not quite as stiff as it becomes in the winter-spring cycle. I recall a discussion on this topic with a very happy Laing Kennedy in Philadelphia at the 100th Cornell-Penn football game (at least I think that's what it was; much of what I remember is clouded by the factby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Harvard's early decisions program has never been binding, as are many other early admissions programs.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Different strokes for different folks (i.e., college vs. the pros). The greatest college coach ever was a complete flop in the pros; Coach M may be the reverse. More power to 'im. Fortunately, Schafer chose not to burn that bridge.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: The inspiration. . . - 21 years ago
I was fortunate to have been in the Dome to see that goal. Probably the most disappointing thing about that game was that Penn, playing a remarkably disciplined game against a much more talented team, had Syracuse beaten until a late game collapse. Else Cornell might have had another national championship in 1988.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

There may be two ECAC teams that could have a go at it this year. I'd prefer the other one were Clarkson.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

John E Hayes '98 '00 wrote: But seriously, I think Al's comment was looking more broadly at D1 hockey as a whole, rather than a slight aimed at scholarship, non-Ivy ECAC programs because, in the end, even if they aren't Ivy caliber, the vast majority of ECAC schools are head and shoulders above most of the rest of the D1 programs, academically. Exactly right, John. My sense is Rich went too farby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Not that simple... - 21 years ago
Let's just say at some schools it's more "easy" than others. Remember, Mike's non-Ivy recruiting experience was at a non-ECAC school.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Thoughts on CU-UWM - 21 years ago
As I understand it, Chabot was recommended to Mike by the same person who recommended LeNeveu. Pretty good track record so far, I'd say. Could be Chabot was left home to prep for his first set of final exams, since it appears Mike intended from the get-go to play Lennie in both games. Not sure we should be trying to read too much into it.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Just in case you missed it... - 21 years ago
Schafer's comment about admissions and financial aid ("To me, there's no tougher job than an Ivy League assistant coach. I worked at a scholarship school, and it's easy. You're your own admissions boards and your own financial aid board." is dead spot on. Anyone who tells you differently is simply in denial--and how many times have we heard that song before.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: Dec 9 Polls - 21 years ago
I don't remember any polls back in the "glory" days, but that certainly doesn't mean there weren't any. Gotta remember there were only 25-30 Division I teams then (old ECAC and old WCHA) so a "top ten" wasn't very meaningful.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
