Jim Hyla MattS Jim Hyla MattS My litmus test on Schafer or any HC or any leader is can a better one be brought in. I agree. There must be a coach out there who is willing to come to CU for the pay, willing to deal with restrictions, and can do a better job. I'm not sure who that is but other programs seem to he able to get them. Why not CU. You go on to say Schafer should be replaced,by MattS - Hockey

My litmus test on Schafer or any HC or any leader is can a better one be brought in? I've been a Schafer supporter but the past two seasons have for me shown he needs to go. So yes I think a better HC is out there. Disclaimer: I don't know anything about the inner workings of how HC are hired, dismissed, or paid at CU. So my statements might be unrealistic. At this point I think a better,by MattS - Hockey
Re: Colgate games - 9 years ago
For the life of me I can't understand the whole defence thing on Saturday. What the hell is the point of dressing Stoick and then don't play him? I can see (but don't agree) the whole not trusting him thing. But is he really that much worse than Ryan after he played a whole 2 min PK then is back in for the next shift after a 45 second rest? I'm a believer that the more tired a player getsby MattS - Hockey
Re: Colgate games - 9 years ago
jek86 Any word on Reece Wilcox, I believe injured in the Harvard game? Last I heard both him & P. McCarron were "close" to coming back. I think last week Schafer said that maybe one/both might play this weekend. I doubt it now but hopefully next weekend.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Colgate games - 9 years ago
If Wilcox and/or P. McCarton are healthy then the team will change for the better. Any word on Fiegl? I wish Schafer would put the Fiegl - Dias - Freschi line back together. I was surprised when he broke them up. I think it was right after what I considered their best game. Other than that the scoring will come down to how well Bardreau, Hilbrich, Buckles play. I wonder which ones areby MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Dartmouth 1/24/15 - 9 years ago
Scersk '97 MattS Also, did I miss something with Patrick McCarron? The "McCarron will be back at all" comment leaves me puzzled. No, I was just wondering when he would be back. He's been out three games now. After writing what I did, I watched the Dartmouth postgame, hoping that Schafer might mention something about injuries. Indeed, Schafer said that Willcox and McCarron are at leby MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Dartmouth 1/24/15 - 9 years ago
Scersk '97 Even when we went down 4-0, I couldn't stop watching, since it felt like there might be a comeback. Too little too late—at least we won the third period… Although I appreciated getting another look at Rauter, who looked pretty good out there, and I'm never bothered by Stoick at D, unlike a member or two of our "actual" top six, the injuries are starting to pile up, indeed.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Dartmouth 1/24/15 - 9 years ago
Overall I don't think CU played poorly. It wasn't as good as last night but there wasn't a large drop off. The penalty shot was a tough goal to give up that early. There was a few times where they really cycled well in the offensive zone and dominated the play. Dartmouth's speed was a killer. Along with CU not stopping the outlet pass to a cherry picker at the blue line. Maybe ifby MattS - Hockey

scoop85 MattS MattS Can someone explain to what the point is of dressing Stoick to play D if he's only going to take 1 shift per period? Wouldn't it be better to get Sade some game experience? Even if it's only a shift a period? Never mind I figured it out. It was to take Fiegl's spot after he got hurt. Or I am assuming he got hurt. He went off the ice towards the locker room and did not reby MattS - Hockey

So far the highlight of the night was Buckles check. Oh and the goalie change.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Dartmouth 1/24/15 - 9 years ago
Iceberg I fully expect the usual goonery out of Dartmouth. I also expect this game to be close as they typically are against these two. Dartmouth has kept up with some decent opponents this year, but they've mostly been up and down. So far for the most part they've been up. Except for about a 5 minute stretch in the middle of the period, it's looked even at best. Damn, I'd kill to have 1 snby MattS - Hockey
Re: Denver @ Cornell #2. 12/6 - 9 years ago
profudge I agree with most comments, and observe that I think the referee pair for Saturday may have been more willing to call hits after the puck has been released than what we were able to do on Friday and coaches recognized that and had us play accordingly. On Friday a good number of our hits on the fore-check were well (1/2 second or a second) after the Denver player had passed or moved tby MattS - Hockey
Re: Denver @ Cornell #2. 12/6 - 9 years ago
I agree with Jim. I think Ryan looked very good last night considering his time off. He definitely looked better last night than he did on Friday. Most of his game seemed to come back quickly. His confidence with the puck and his ability to make plays taking it out of the D zone was right back on track. I'm excited to see how his play will be come next year. The guys did look a bit more tentaby MattS - Hockey
Re: Denver @ Cornell - 9 years ago
I think one of the best things Gillam does is control rebounds. There aren't too many and a lot of them are into the corners and not directly in front. His positioning is far superior to Iles. The Fiegl, Dias, Freschi line was great last night. Its too bad some of the high profile (draft picked) players don't work as hard as those three.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell over Yale 3-2 - 9 years ago
Where both Knisley and Rauter healthy scratches? I was surprised that Knisley wasn't in the lineup. I thought he's played well this season. Certainly well enough not to to be a healthy scratch.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Attendance at Lynah - 9 years ago
upprdeck I know that ticket prices are a huge reason many townies have given up their season tickets. lack of winning and scoring is why they dont show up to every game even when having tickets. lack of demand also means you can watch any game you want now so why commit to a full season package . lack of CU making more flexable paying options doesnt help either. I agree about the townies. I siby MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell over Yale 3-2 - 9 years ago
I need to eat some crow tonight. Hilbrich's goal was a goal scorer's goal. Great hands on that one. I still think he plays small for his size but tonight that was an impressive shot. Overall it was a decently played game. The first was excellent. The second was mediocre. The third was pretty good. I was pleased that Gillam shook off the second Yale goal and made a couple of good saves almoby MattS - Hockey

Dafatone Jim Hyla Trotsky MattSI'm an die hard hockey fan for over 35 years and I don't mind watching defensive style hockey but even I get sick of losing while watching dump and chase. Me too, and I never thought I'd say Cornell hockey was boring me. I don't know why we keep saying we are just boring dump and chase. Our game style has openned up considerably over the years. upprdeck i dont think the games have been that boring, just not high scoring. not for lack of chances though. the 4-2 slu game could have just as easily been 6-4 cornell with all the chances CU had. would that have made it more exciting just because they scored on the breakaways? I think for the novice fan (read: relatively uneducated at hockey Cornell student) yes it would have been more excitby MattS - Hockey
Re: Next round of conference realignments? - 9 years ago
kingpin248 Trotsky Can Northern Arizona follow suit, or are D-3s locked out (except for grandfathered programs)? If memory serves, the final effect of Prop 65-1 was that only those schools grandfathered in by that proposition (Clarkson, SLU, RPI, CC in men's hockey) can grant scholarships. I don't believe there's anything preventing a school from making the jump up, a la RIT. I'm not sure aboby MattS - Hockey
Re: Attendance at Lynah - 9 years ago
ithacatNow we just have high-priced tickets, boring offensive play, and thuggish on ice behavior. I guess three out of four isn't so bad. I think this is correct. With the addition of not winning. Most of the students are not avid hockey fans, at least to start, so when the team is losing it's tough to spend the money and watch a dull team when there are so many other things to occupy their timby MattS - Hockey
Re: SLU 4 @ Cornell 2 - 9 years ago
Well that was another embarrassing moment for Cornell. I can't help but wonder if/when the administration is going to have had enough. Anyone else notice the difference between the play from last night and tonight? I'm not just talking about the outcome but the difference in confidence of the players and the cohesiveness of the play. Coincidence?by MattS - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 Clarkson 1 (ot) - 9 years ago
I thought overall that was a pretty complete game for CU. The first period particularly they had the forechecking working. It was the best they have looked all season. I was bitching about Lowry earlier but tonight was the kind of game I expected him to develop. He was all over the ice making good offensive & defensive plays. Only downside to the game was the stupid penalties. The offby MattS - Hockey
Re: cornell - quin sat night - 9 years ago
scoop85 ithacat That may be true, but I'm hoping Cornell suspends him before the ECAC gets involved. A coach should not speak in such a way and get away with it. He also said the players get their cues from the coaches -- wonder how many parents want their kids handling adversity in such a way? Maybe scoring while on a 5x3 or on an extended PP would have made for a more appropriate response. If hby MattS - Hockey

I'm a Shafer fan also, but I agree this system needs to be modernized. The game has passed the System, and maybe Shafer, by. If Shafer wants to win a national championship he's got to adapt so that some decent offense can be generated. In my section of Lynah it feels like everyone can see it. Heck even the Shafer supporters in my section are grumbling more and more after the past two plus seasonsby MattS - Hockey
Re: Saturday: UNO 2 Cornell 1 - 9 years ago
I think Hilbrich has decent hands for a big man. I just think he plays small. Meh, maybe it is just me having too high expectations for him. And Mike likes anyone who is huge. I agree with J. McCarron and especially Lowry. I thought McCarron was going to be a huge force out on the ice, but for the most part he's just a (sometimes) hitting and a (mostly) penalty machine. I really thought Lby MattS - Hockey
