Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: LP Games - 10 years ago
Trotsky MattSI think one think that gets overlooked with Ryan's offensive side is the excellent play by Wilcox that allows him to pinch and be offensive minded knowing that Wilcox is steady on the defensive end. Wilcox's play has alleviated the need for Ryan to become more and more defensively minded.Behind (literally) every great offensive defenseman is a great defensive defenseman who can coverby MattS - Hockey
Re: LP Games - 10 years ago
Trotsky RatushnyFan rediceI will confess my surprise that Joakim Ryan was not 1st team all-ecac. I am a big fan of his, but I used to think that he could be manhandled in front of Cornell's net. Not sure if others agree with that assessment. I think he has improved his defensive play. The kid is tough too, he blocked a shot with his facemask against Quinnipiac in their barn. Re: LP Games - 10 years ago
BearLover MattS Kyle Rose rediceUnion simply was NOT going to allow a loss and they have the talent to make it happen. I think it's more likely they had the coaching to make it happen. Union appears to have set-plays designed specifically to create scoring opportunities where the D or the goaltender is caught out of position. No, they don't work every time, but they don't have to. Cornell doesn'tby MattS - Hockey
Re: Lake Placid Attendance - 10 years ago
Jeff Hopkins '82 I was frankly disappointed in the Cornell turnout. There was one small group of students. They were loud and active, but few in number. People barely come to home games anymore.by MattS - Hockey
Re: What is your definition of a Successful Season - 10 years ago
Back in the fall I agreed with Jim and both teams met those expectations. Going into the season, I was hopeful of the men's team doing well but realistically I was very concerned about how the defense would play. Anytime that two freshman and a sophomore are half of the defensive pairings it could be cause for concern. However, I thought they played well. I thought the offense would be betterby MattS - Hockey

Re: 2013-14 Women's Ice Hockey in NC$$ tourney - 10 years ago
Josh '99 MattS I agree about the short CU bench. It was obvious MC had the better legs for a lot of the 3rd.This seems to have been the case for the women's team for a while now. For instance, the 2009-10 team that played to 3 OTs in the national championship game had just 18 players, not even close to enough for a full lineup; this year's has 21 including three goalies, enough for a full lineupby MattS - Hockey
Re: Game 2: Cornell 1, Clarkson 4 - 10 years ago
Trotsky MattSThe point I was trying to make (badly) was while that line is not a scoring line at least the we're dominating Clarkson while they were out there which was way more than the top 2 lines were. I'm pretty sure that the chances of Ferlin, Lowry, and co scoring from the defensive zone is a heck of a lot less than the 3rd line playing hard in the offensive zone. For most of this series it'by MattS - Hockey
Re: Game 2: Cornell 1, Clarkson 4 - 10 years ago
Scersk '97 MattS In the third period the line of Freschi, Dias, and Craig were playing the best. Granted they are not a scoring line... Not to be harsh, but you've undermined your own quibble with Schafer. Craig's history of timely goal scoring notwithstanding, there is about a .042% chance that 2/3rds of that line will make the score sheet, and I'm leaving Freschi out of it only because he's aby MattS - Hockey
Re: Game 2: Cornell 1, Clarkson 4 - 10 years ago
Trotsky MattSI'm glad Buckles was sat. I assume he was sat for his bone headed penalty last night late in the game and was not hurt. In the pre-game Schafer indicated that Buckles was a healthy scratch because of the retaliation. He did defend Matt by saying Clarkson was hassling him with stick play all night, but the main lesson is you can't take the penalty in that situation regardless of provby MattS - Hockey
Re: Game 2: Cornell 1, Clarkson 4 - 10 years ago
Well that was a pretty bad game. Not much positive to take away. I guess for some stretches CU controlled play and got some OK chances, but right from the start they were not playing nearly as hard as Clarkson was. Well, that's not quite true the penalty kill on the 5 x 3 was good. Those boys worked hard! The "ref" Baker was making some interesting calls. I'm not sure what game he waby MattS - Hockey
Re: 2013-14 Women's Ice Hockey in NC$$ tourney - 10 years ago
Tough one to lose. I hate whining about refs but, um, yeah, uh, let's just say it was interesting. I agree about the short CU bench. It was obvious MC had the better legs for a lot of the 3rd. CU talent made the game interesting at the end even though they were tired.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the pros - March 2014 - 10 years ago
Josh '99 Trotsky RatushnyFan I think he's a rental in MN if Vanek wants to be there. GMs usually go for top-end skill versus grit/determination/going to those dirty goal spots when they have a choice. I was actually wondering if Moulson would head back to the Islanders to play with his buddy Tavares. Seemingly Garth Snow closed that door, I heard him "defend" the Vanek trade on theby MattS - Hockey

Re: Harvard @ Cornell 3/1/14 - 10 years ago
sah67 MattS I wonder what happened to Wilcox. He did not play much/any of the second. He made several egregious turnovers in our own zone: don't know if that necessarily had anything to do with it though. He played some in the third but not a regular shift with Ryan. Lewis was taking his spot some. Speaking of Ryan, I thought he was an absolute beast tonight.by MattS - Hockey

Nice period by CU. Finally one of those many chance gets buried. I wonder what happened to Wilcox. He did not play much/any of the second.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Dartmouth @ Cornell 2/28/14 - 10 years ago
Towerroad MattS Towerroad If CU plays like they did in the second and third periods then they will beat most opponents. How many goals did they score in those 2 periods? Nice job cherry picking! Well done! Sorry, I guess I just don't understand. I thought that putting the puck in the net played an important part in the game. My bad. Are you trying to be obtuse? I clearly commented earby MattS - Hockey

Re: Dartmouth @ Cornell 2/28/14 - 10 years ago
I thought CU played well, especially in the second and third periods. CU was certainly the team that performed better in all facets of the game except scoring. Yes, it is the most important aspect, but I thought on most nights they get the two goals they need to win with the opportunities they created. the Dartmouth goalie played well and CU just couldn't finish. It is a shame to loose a game likby MattS - Hockey
Re: RPI @ CU 2/15/14 - 10 years ago
Trotsky MattSI don't believe in luck. I don't believe in a "hot goaltender" and any of that other BS that people use for excuses. It's all very well to not believe in "luck" as a supernatural pattern emerging out random variation. I don't believe in that either; it's magical thinking. But a "hot" goaltender just expresses the fact that the players are not Strat cardby MattS - Hockey

cbuckser flyersgolf I was going to say its time for Iles to get hot and stay hot till the end of the season. He has not stood on his head in a while. @ Colorado College? This is it for Andy I hope he has a fantastic final chapter. Great young man. Andy stole the game at Brown two weeks ago. I wouldn't be surprised if his neck is still sore from that game. Re: RPI @ CU 2/15/14 - 10 years ago
ScrewBU Did they win a single faceoff that entire game? And the lack of any urgency whatsoever in the last 15 mins, just nauseating. This will be the reality until they get rid of Shithead Schafer. If they don't turn it around by the end of the year, burn the program to the ground. I agree with the urgency part. I am so absolutely frustrated with the team and the coaching. Its getting to theby MattS - Hockey

Re: Union @ CU 2/14/14 - 10 years ago
Trotsky MattSAnd starting on Monday I would review the game tape with him and every time I determined that he should have shot but passed instead. I would make him run the seats in Lynah. I think he needs to shoot more. Period. He's not selfish enough when it comes to shooting. What he's trying to do is laudable (use his skill to draw guys to him then dish to the open man) but too much can go wronby MattS - Hockey
Re: Union @ CU 2/14/14 - 10 years ago
I have mixed feelings about this game. I thought that CU outplayed Union for a lot of the game, except on the scoreboard. The inability to convert on plenty of chances is disheartening. Can someone explain to me why Schafer pulled Iles but then has four men stacked in the neutral zone and only one doing any type of forecheck? Whats the point of having he extra attacker if you're not going toby MattS - Hockey
