Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Colgate 12/7 - 10 years ago
Apparently Schafer wasn't happy with scoring so many goals and he's decided that reverting to sending one man on the forecheck and the other 4 standing around doing nothing is the best way to win.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Red Hot Hockey - 10 years ago
css228 MattS David Harding Did the ice seem soft? There seemed to me more spontaneous falls than I expect and the crew came out with shovels during every commercial time-out to scrape up shavings. MSG ice is (or at least was pre-renovation) notorious in the NHL for having the worst ice of any rink. I guess we're not counting the Florida teams as NHL anymore. Still MSG is by far the worst of anby MattS - Hockey

Re: Red Hot Hockey - future of series - 10 years ago
billhoward Now there's a Kelly-Harkness Cup (named in that order based on the outcome of the 2013 game) which suggests there'll be an ongoing series. But are some fans getting a little weary of the series? There were more empty seats than ever before. Two sections behind the BU-defended goal (1st and 3rd) were less than half full and I hope those were BU sections. Even so, if there were 2,500 empby MattS - Hockey

Chris '03 According to John Buccigross, Gillam is only the third NCAA goalie to score a goal, ever. Video on sportscenter. College Hockey, Inc. says he's the 8th college goalie to be credited with a goal. 3rd to shoot it into an empty net.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Yale 11/23 - 10 years ago
dag14 You are right. We were outshot 31-29. What other facet of the game did we not control? Time of possession? Hits? PP? PK? Not only was this our best game so far this season, this was the best game I have seen a Lynah since I can't remember when. Gives one hope for the rest of the season. +1 I thought CU by far played the better game. I guess if I had one place to complain it woby MattS - Hockey
Re: Momentum for Brown & Yale - 10 years ago
carpy85 sah67 According to the box score, Buckles was given a Game DQ for the scuffle at the final horn, so we'll lose him for the Yale game tomorrow night. The Brown player was given only a game misconduct for face-masking, as opposed to Buckles's DQ for fighting. The refs weren't exactly for cornell in their calls. I had seen much worse fights than the Buckles fight that gave him the DQ, butby MattS - Hockey
Re: Momentum for Brown & Yale - 10 years ago
I have to say that was one of the strangest games I have ever witnessed in person. A penalty shot. Broken glass. A mid-period ice resurfacing. Lots of scoring. And a PP that looked decent! Shocking!by MattS - Hockey
Re: Momentum for Brown & Yale - 10 years ago
BearLover MattS Every student in sections A & B should give up their tickets for the remainder if the season. They were chanting the assinine "bend over" while a penalty shot was taking place. If they are going to pay so little attention to the game they might as well not come. And in other game notes the D looks horrible. Craig should not have gotten another shift for his dumbby MattS - Hockey

Dafatone MattS Dafatone Trotsky Wonder if the lineup changes we saw Saturday will be repeated? Craig was involved in several altercations. He and de Swardt seem like a push. Schafer implied in the pregame that Hilbrich was benched for "not showing up" Friday. I didn't notice much of Buckles (as opposed to other games). I'm not sure I heard Schafer correctly but if so then the Lowryby MattS - Hockey

Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
profudge I've sat on the townie side in N for 22 years now. I too notice less noise and enthusiasm compared to earlier. Including on the Townie side. I see folks on their electronic pocket device even during the play of the game - even communicating with friends/family in another section rather than cheering. I think a nice electronic baffle closing Lynah off the air might help ...by MattS - Hockey

Josh '99 MattS Josh '99 MattS On a very serious question, how can Schafer watch a PP like Q has (or anyone that is decent) then watch CU's PP and not make some kind of changes? Is it possible to have slower passing between the three men who are up high? Q's passing was crisp and quick, while CU's was slow and hesitant. Something has got to change. But, I mean... how much of that do you put on theby MattS - Hockey

Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
TheMatrix WillCMJr There was a random moment in the second period that here was a mostly standing ovation. There was no penalty, no goal, play was stopped, etc. Anyone know what happened? I could be mistaken but I think this was right after Cornell killed the second penalty of the 5v3. There was a stoppage right as the penalty expired and people looked at the scoreboard and realized that both penby MattS - Hockey
Re: 11/2 Quinnipiac - 10 years ago
Jim Hyla MattS Well that was disappointing. I don't think there is any positive to take away from that game except that occasionally CU managed a decent rush up ice in the first period. After that they looked gassed. And once Q scored it was like they were mentally done. But it was pretty typical of the last couple of seasons. Stupid penalty, check. Bad PP, check. After 1 I am mildly impressed with CU ability to make plays off the rush. The PP has come back to where I expect it.by MattS - Hockey
Re: Princeton - 10 years ago
andyw2100 MattS McCarron's goal was from my angle pretty nifty looking. I would have loved to see a replay of it. That goal was really set up by some great play and then an excellent pass by Ferlin. I'm almost certain the way the goal was announced Ferlin was not credited with the second assist, but checking the box score today I see that he now has been. In my mind he's at least as responsibleby MattS - Hockey
Re: Princeton - 10 years ago
Changing subject to actually talk about the game.... I thought the first and second periods looked good. There was good forechecking and basically taking it to Princeton. And shockingly the PP looked decent too. The third period looked kind of bad. Not just because Princeton scored, but because once again they switched to a completely defensive mode and they also looked tired to me. That waby MattS - Hockey

Re: Cornell 7 York 2 (exhib) - 10 years ago
The thing I took away from the game as most important was the continuation of stupid penalties. The de Swardt elbowing one standing out most in my mind. That was just stupid. I hope this doesn't indicate what is going to happen the rest of the season. I did like what I saw from Freschi and Lewis. They both had a good game and style of play that I think fits well. I really liked how Bardreau loby MattS - Hockey

Re: Frozen Four Results - 11 years ago
scoop85 Trotsky I may be saying the same thing, but I would like us to work on getting the puck off the stick one beat quicker. Yale accentuates their team speed by moving the play along quickly. Cornell always seems to be deliberate, if not tentative, so even our fast players (Ryan comes to mind) allow the opponent to reconstitute the defense position and pen them in. One of the best thingsby MattS - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
Trotsky TowerroadSo, when I see a player skate to the face off circle and jam the end of his stick into an opposing players nuts, when I see that we lead the country in goonery by 1.5 minutes per game, when I see the coach repeatedly whining about officiating and badgering an opposing coach for winning a lopsided game I think that we have crossed an unwritten line about what it means to be an Ivyby MattS - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
My take on a potential coaching change, especially when the current coach has done a good job in the recent past, is always to question: Who can be brought in that is thought would do better? If that question cannot be answered with a decent amount of certainty then I am in favor of keeping the current coach. With that being said I think that an evaluation of that question should be done every 2by MattS - Hockey
