Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Alumni in the Pros May 2013 - 10 years ago
Beeeej Greening just scored the 2OT game-winner for the Sens on a rebound to make the series 2-1 Penguins. Gritty, hard work. Matt Cooke loses, humanity wins.by Ben - Hockey
Re: New Rules? - 10 years ago
Surely making the goals bigger would be the easiest way to increase scoring. But is that even a desirable end?by Ben - Hockey
Re: Post Season Awards - 11 years ago
Great. An endorsement of this season's mix of petulance, stupidity, occasional brilliance, and overwhelming inconsistency. None of the '14ers except Iles getting an A is telling as well. -edit- I should clarify that I'm talking about McCarron.by Ben - Hockey

Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
KeithK Ben Not really. The cutoff (GPA, SAT/ACT) is higher at HYP than it is here. Students who get admitted to one of HYP as well as Cornell will probably have higher measurable academic attributes than students who only get into Cornell. Because of this, Cornell will be offering financial aid packages that are effectively merit-based. I was trying to say that there may already have been some bby Ben - Hockey
Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
KeithK Ben It also means that financial aid is not wholly need-based. Not necessarily. It just means we're using a different definition of need. That is, HYP's definition. Snark aside, I don't think the need-based financial aid policy ever guaranteed that all students would get the same types of aid, just that all students would be admitted without consideration of need and would receive a paby Ben - Hockey
Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
KeithK BMac Matching the higher scholarships of wealthier Ivy League schools to ensure athletic competitiveness... that's about as close to giving athletic scholarships as I'd ever like Cornell to be. Or perhaps it's over the line. I'm conflicted. It's unfair to the rest of us, but it's more fair for athletic competitions against other Ivies. The Ivy League was created to enshrine a groupby Ben - Hockey
Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
George64I need some clarification. I thought that financial aid was essentially "need based" and administered though Day Hall, not Bartels Hall. I was under the impression (perhaps naively) that the HYP match applied to all Cornell students. While I've attended far more athletic events than Glee Club concerts or poetry readings, I like to think that all students are treated equally wby Ben - Hockey

I can top all of your concrete bunkers: Levien Gym (Columbia basketball) is the worst sporting arena that I've ever visited. Horrible place.by Ben - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four Results - 11 years ago
RichH Ben I expect all the ECAC supporters on this board will be heading here to pick up the appropriate swag. There's a difference between being happy for your conference/league/division and being an all-out fan. I wished several Yale fans I met luck before the game, and congratulated others after the game. While a group of us were leaving the arena, we passed by some obviously exuberant Yaleby Ben - Hockey

Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
marty marty Ben As a fan, it's great to see your team win a game coming back from 3-0 down, but an excellent coach makes sure his team doesn't have to dig themselves out of that hole. News flash. Motzko no longer considered excellent. Ditto Pecknold. Time to replace him, too. Way to not get the point at all.by Ben - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four Results - 11 years ago
Kyle Rose No need to repeat what Greg said. I'll just add that Cornell is hardly "a 9th place team" from the perspective of a recruit: Cornell has been the most consistently good team in the conference over the past decade and a half: one off year doesn't change that. By virtue of attracting recruits that would previously not have returned the calls of ECAC recruiters, a stronger conferby Ben - Hockey

TrotskyAccusations of rape, like accusations of child molestation, can destroy the accused's life regardless of the eventual verdict. That makes plastering EITHER PARTY'S NAME all over the place ethically suspect. It's wonderful for circulation, but it's not knuckle-dragging atavism to suggest extra care be used. Police name the person charged with a crime as part of the public trial process. Tby Ben - Other Sports

Jim Hyla Ben Jim HylaYes, I know the Denver program was more successful than CU has been, but that's to be expected. Anyone who thinks otherwise, well to quote Adam, they're an idiot. If we were to fire Schafer over this year, or even persieved trend, I know I'd quit contributing. Denver is not us and we should never be them. Please do not imply that I said this when I quite plainly did not.by Ben - Hockey

Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
KeithK Ben That's not the point. Coaches are not paid for a "journey." They are paid to win games and titles. They are also representatives of the university/team/club and have obligations to represent that entity in a responsible way. This is not a comment on whether or not Schafer should be behind the bench in October, I addressed that on the first page of this thread. It's about howby Ben - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
Tom Lento Ben Are we paying coaches for journeys? If so, Schafer had better be leading Senior Week rafting trips. Actually, Cornell does pay coaches for things other than wins and championships. Historically, the AD has been willing to keep coaches with frankly terrible records around provided they were under contract and running the program the right way. In light of this, think about the factby Ben - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
KeithK adamw Since it directly applies, here is the commentary I just wrote on the Gwozdecky firing: My favorite bit from your piece: "But the cutthroat, winning-is-the-only thing mentality has infiltrated college hockey as it has other big-time college sports." The older I get the more I understand that winning is fun but it's the journey that makes sports fun. Are we paying coachesby Ben - Hockey
Re: Rutgers Coach Abuse - 11 years ago
ugarte Towerroad BMac Rutgers basketball coach pulls a Bob Knight. Love watching Jeremy Schaap (Cornell alum) absolutely pummel the Rutgers AD for not firing the coach. I think the AD is also the problem. FYP. If the problem with the AD is that he didn't fire the coach, that doesn't absolve the coach. Rice got fired this morning. This is the AD's attempt to keep his job.by Ben - Other Sports
Re: NCAA Tournament - 11 years ago
Scersk '97And sure I'm defensive. What I wonder is why everyone else isn't? Many people on this forum seem ready to throw in the towel, throw the baby out with the bathwater, and/or . What I read here lately are the ramblings of a bunch of pretty fair-weather fans who lack perspective. As a '97 grad, it's something I'll never understand, probably because I saw much of '87–'93 as a townie, andby Ben - Hockey
Re: NCAA Tournament - 11 years ago
Scersk '97I saw nothing "reasoned" about BearLover's assertion, made in the manner of an overheated schoolboy, that Yale's program is "better," whatever that means, than ours is right now. Where is the support? Feel free to be pedantic. I'll help you. Use Allain's tenure, since you love him so. We're 4-10-2 vs. them, with two very high profile losses. They've won 2 ECAby Ben - Hockey
Re: NCAA Tournament - 11 years ago
BearLover Not sure why people here want Yale to keep winning. It doesn't actually do Cornell any bit of good because the rankings are computerized, and I don't want Cornell to no longer be the team that has gotten the farthest in the NCAA tourney in recent memory. Nonetheless, it's official: Yale is better than Cornell at hockey right now. I don't mean this current team, I mean the entireby Ben - Hockey

Alright, I'll say it: Frozen Four appearances in back-to-back years for the ECAC, including one Ivy team. Perhaps we should re-consider the effects of ECAC and Ivy rules on ECAC teams' ability to compete at the national level...by Ben - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Dartmouth Lax - 11 years ago
billhoward Jeff Hopkins '82 According to Inside Lax, it's 17-4 after 3. Edit: Now 21-4. If it weren't for the "4", it sounds like a football score. FWIW, I've never seen us score over 20 before, either. Cornell 21, Syracuse 3, at Cornell in 1972. Syracuse was having an off year. Cornell was, too: Backsliding after the national champsionship season. 21-11 v Penn, March 28, 2009.by Ben - Other Sports
Re: Kyle Dake and other dominant Cornell athletes - 11 years ago
billhoward Dake. Dryden and Nieuwendyk. Marinaro. French and McEneaney; most likely Siebald and now Pannell. There's a difference between players for the ages and yet another Cornell All-America selection. Some WICErs deserve to be here. Surely Johnston. Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go - 11 years ago
My concern is not so much the losses this season, but the manner of the losses. Giving up leads, inconsistency of performance from period to period, taking stupid and goonish penalties, and not doing the small things correctly (blocking shots, winning battles on the boards, etc.). Losing to a more talented team that executes well is understandable. Losing to a team of similar or lesser talent byby Ben - Hockey
