Re: HARVARD SUCKS - 11 years ago
Rita nyc94 Jordan 04 I hope Arizona beats them by 50. It's like 25-7 or something with about 7:00 to go first half. Edit: 40-22 at the half Not 50 pt, but losing by 23 pts does put you in the woodshed. Final: AZ 74 - Harvard 51. Order is restored in the universe.by Ben - Hockey
Re: Thank You - 11 years ago
Jim Hyla Ben cbuckser css228 I'm pretty sure that the team two years ago was far more resilient, bouncing back from a horrific start to get a top 4 seed. Considering that the team lost a lot of excellent players in the summer of 2010, I wouldn't call the 2-4 start in conference play horrific. If we look at the overall schedule and not just conference games, the 2-6 start certainly qualifies asby Ben - Hockey

Re: Thank You - 11 years ago
css228 cbuckserI agree completely. This team didn't execute nearly as well as it needed to in order to approach the expectations we all had for it. On the other hand, this team was the most resilient I have seen in 23 seasons of watching Cornell hockey. Twice during the bleakest moments, the team got off the mat and bounced back. The Quinnipiac series was a microcosm of the season. There was aby Ben - Hockey

Re: Quarterfinals at Q - 11 years ago
Trotsky If we win by 1 tomorrow we advance to AC after a cumulative -8 goal differential in the series. That alone is reason to win; it would be hysterical. If the season continues as it has been going, we will win tomorrow, get thrashed 12-0 by Yale in AC, win the consolation and squeak into the NCAAs where Minnesota will pummel us into the ice. Literally. If nothing else, they need to getby Ben - Hockey
Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
Most gutting game I've seen at Lynah. Not quite the worst possible last game as a student, but very close. They could have won 4-1, Saulnier was flying in the first, and Rougeau nearly made lightning strike twice at the end. I think Slebodnick was the saddest athlete I've ever seen after letting in the last goal. Next year is going to be tough, losing the top D-pair to graduation and probably Gagby Ben - Hockey

Re: Quarterfinal rooting interests - 11 years ago
Jordan 04 Ben Not really, but even if we accept this premise, it would be wiser to prepare for the higher likelihood of Q thrashing us 8-0 over two games than thinking about AC. In the same way, I don't remember people worrying about rust for us and pushing Dartmouth's chances last year. Home teams with byes have that advantage for a reason: they're better. That doesn't make an upset impossible,by Ben - Hockey
Re: Quarterfinal rooting interests - 11 years ago
Jim HylaSo let all you naysayers stay home and carp, some of us will be there watching, others at home watching, but win or lose a lot of us will have fun. In the end that's what it's all about for me. What is the point of this? I shouted my throat out at every game this season, and I'm sticking around in Ithaca for another day to cheer for WICE. Don't tell me that an attempt to be objective abouby Ben - Hockey
Re: Quarterfinal rooting interests - 11 years ago
Chris '03 css228 Jordan 04 css228 If we can beat Q... we can beat anyone left This is the team that recently tied Brown at home, and lost to Harvard, right? Why can't we beat them? As is always the case in the league, anybody can beat anybody left, without it being too much of a surprise. Because we take a lot of idiotic penalties and our penalty kill sucks? Because we only have one dangeroby Ben - Hockey
Re: Wallowing - 11 years ago
Jim Hyla css228 Well it was a nice rebound while it lasted. Wow, you don't have any faith, do you? An aggregate score of 2-8 over two games is, at the least, indicative of differences between the two sides.by Ben - Hockey
Re: NC$$_ Women v. Mercyhurst - 11 years ago
Rita Hey, this deserves its own thread. From the ECAC Harvard and Clarkson are in as well. Hockey East sends BU and BC. The only 2 western teams Minnesota and N.Dakota meet in the quarterfinals. Go NDAK Go. North Dakota is 10th in Pairwise, behind Wisconsin...how did they get in ahead of the Badgers?by Ben - Hockey
Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
scoop85With Cornell leading 2-0 midway through the 2nd, St. Lawrence scored a soft goal, and dominated the rest of the period, tying it late on the 2-on-0 break. From Section B it looked like a great wrister to the top corner of the near post. WICE was in control in the first, they got their forecheck going and kept the puck pretty well. As you said, SLU came back stronger in the second, and rby Ben - Hockey
Re: Gary Bettman, SI Power Issue - 11 years ago
KeithK Ben These lists invariably ignore or demote sports outside the US and Canada. N Srinivasan is more important to sports than Bettman or Goodell. There are sports outside of North America/ And I should care why? A publication ought to focus on things that are of interest to their readership. For a US publication that means US sports. It certainly does not mean cricket. Then qualify theby Ben - John Spencer Is Dead

billhoward Gary Bettman profiled in Sports Illustrated 3/11/13 now that he's been commissioner of the NHL for 20 years. Despite his critics (and SI has unearthed most of them), players and owners are making more money. TrotskyPlayers are not Strat-O-Matic cards without memory, and improvement (or deterioration) in performance over sub-intervals within a season are not fictions. Claiming a streak persists from one season to the next is silly. If players' memory matters, then the second statement doesn't follow. Terrible teams stay terrible (in some part) because they don't have a winning mentality, and you caby Ben - Hockey

Tom Lento Ben Tom LentoBC is the only one of those three teams to take home the national title since NoDak last won it in 2000. As the son of a Badger, I'm obligated to remind you of Wisconsin's 2006 national title. I'm totally confused by this, since a) I mentioned Wisconsin's national title in the post and b) the "three teams" in question here are BC, NoDak, and Michigan. What do thby Ben - Hockey

Towerroad TimV Trotsky Schadenfreude is an anagram for Schafer End Due. Wow. That surprised me. Realistically, to be replaced by who? Doug Darraugh? Would Union's Coach jump? And you must kill at Scrabble. I have to believe that Cornell could attract a quality coach. Darraugh has done an outstanding job with the women's program. Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
dag14 Ah, these women are students? Playing Sat/Sun means they can miss fewer classes? Nah, there must be some other reason for the schedule Then why do they normally play Friday night/Saturday afternoon? The ideal combination for minimizing missed classes would be Saturday night/Sunday afternoon (which I believe is the HE schedule). And if that were the case, it still doesn't explain why MICEby Ben - Hockey
Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
Thomas Larson Sunday game has to be early because of NCAA selections, which are that night at 6 p.m. They can't play that game at 7. Maybe the latest would be 3 p.m. start, but that's pushing it if SLU wins because they're not going to get a bid unless they win. That would only give committee an hour to redraw the bracket. That said, not sure about Saturday's reasoning. Originally, the scheduby Ben - Hockey

Schedule for next weekend: Saturday, March 9 Cornell vs. St Lawrence - 1 PM Harvard vs. Clarkson - 4 PM Sunday, March 10 Final - 1 PM Is there any reason these games have to be played in the afternoon? Night games would draw far better attendances.by Ben - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Yale 2013 - 11 years ago
dbilmes Amazingly, we didn't have a single power play and only had one Friday night against Brown. You're implying that this could have made a difference. Our PP is 44th at 14.41%.by Ben - Hockey

Jordan 04 Video is up If you want to know what utter devastation looks like (in very low resolution), just watch the Colgate players frozen around the net after the game-winner. What an awful weekend. Here's better video of the last two goals. Click "HD" to actually see the puck.by Ben - Hockey
Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
Cop at Lynah What an amazing comeback. 2 goals in the last minute to secure the victory. Will need to play much better next weekend if they want to secure the ECAC championship. Probably beats yesterday for drama. Again, they didn't play at their best, particularly in the first, but they improved as the game went on, and Colgate collapsed in the final minute. Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
dag14I am a huge fan of Coach Derraugh and Cornell women's hockey so I don't make this statement lightly: Cornell was awful in the first and second periods. Stupid penalties, bad decisions on the clear, poor passing and careless mistakes. In spite of that, they outshot Colgate 2-1 but were losing on the scoreboard. They got their act together in the third period and started to play with focusby Ben - Hockey
Re: General Women's Thread - 11 years ago
Chris '03 Cornell 5-4 in OT in game one with goals at 19:19 (3) and :39 (OT). Wild game with a lot of penalties. 43 PIM, which is the most I can remember seeing in a women's game. Gagliardi got 5+Game Misc for what I thought should have been a simple two-minute boarding penalty near the end of the first period, for a hit down in the corner by Section A. Six of the nine goals were PPGs, and Slebodby Ben - Hockey
