[OT] Nickerson champion for 5th time

Troy Nickerson won his record 5th NYS high school wrestling title on Saturday night.

The story points out that his 209-7 record includes four losses in 7th grade.

Even better is this:

Nickerson eclipsed the record he shared with Jesse Jantzen, who won four state titles at Shoreham Wading Rivers High on Long Island from 1997-2000....
"I've seen him wrestle a few times," said Jantzen, who wrestled at Harvard and won the 141-pound NCAA championship as a senior last year. "We tried our best to get him to come to Harvard."


Another highlight of the match in Albany was the victory of Jim Almy of Duanesburg NY in the small school division.  His coach, Joe Bena, came out of retirement to bring several Duanesburg wrestlers to the state tournament.  He had coached the much larger Niskayuna HS team for many years and after getting the itch to return to coaching had an amazing run with a team that had never had any state titles in its history.
