Unless rules have changed, a game misconduct automatically includes a suspension.  1-game suspension for the first one, 2-game suspension for the second, and so on.  I'm pretty sure we'll be playing without Gleed on Friday.

Gleed Hit

I had a really good view of Gleed's hit.  No penalty should have been called.  Gleed didn't even check him, he gave Inhacak a push with one hand, and Inhacak turned face first into the boards.  It seems as if he was trying to draw a penalty.

By the way, Ari, how could you say the hit was warranted, I doubt you had a good angle on it from Section B, let alone see the hit happen.

.....

Do you really think that Pegararo will get scratched in place of Bitz?  I only say this because Pegararo is one of our 4 centers, and Bitz is a winger.  I was just looking at the lines:

Moulson-Scott-Hynes
Iggulden-Knoepfli-Carefoot
McCutcheon-Abbott-Varteressian
Abbott-Pegararo-Sawada

It seems like the only guys he can take out our McCutcheon and Varteressian.  Also, why doesn't Schafer just scratch Chabot and play 13 forwards?

I believe there's a limit on the number of skaters (i.e., non-goalies) that can be dressed.

Currenet NCAA Rules ... Game DQ = suspension / Game Misc = out for rest of game
Gleed will play on friday night
Let's GO Red!!!

There's always so much confusion over this - they should rename the game DQ penalty as a "game suspension" penalty.  I think that would be easier for us all to remember.

Well put your doubts to rest because I saw the whole thing.  Bitz won't be back for 2-3 weeks so who's place he takes doesn't really matter at the moment.  After this weekend, I think it will be McCutcheon.  Bitz played center last year and so did Varteressian, making any forward fair game to be taken out of the lineup in Bitz's favor.

Also, you are required to have at least two fully dressed goalies, with the third one being optional, so there is no delay donning gear if the starting goalie is injured, thrown out, or otherwise unable to continue to play.

AWESOME comment from Brian Ihnacak in the SUN today:
"We're as good as any team in the league.  The effort just wasn't there tonight."
Something must have been knocked loose in that hit from behind.

Harrier

Gleed didn't even skate into that hit from behind - his feet were planted and he pushed hin in the back trying to move him to and pin him on the boards - it was a wuss major and certainly no game miscouduct.

Bitz plays center and wing - I suspect that you will be seeing him at center as soon as he is able to return.

Scott is playing great but has NO shot at all - seeing Bitz on the first line center with three big scoring threats would be almost impossible to handle.

[/q]Couldn't see it myself on the video, but I don't have too much of a problem with the refs being overly cautious about hitting from behind - it can be extremely dangerous.  As for the game misconduct, correct me if I'm wrong but I think the misconduct is automatic with a major hitting from behind in college. (It's certainly a frequent pairing.)

Harrier

Does not have to be a game misconduct.  You can call a 5 and 10 without the Game.  He did not deserve the 5 anyway!

OK, I finally decided to go look.  NCAA rule book located here: http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2005/2005_ice_hockey_rules.pdf

[q]Hitting From Behind
SECTION 23. a. A player shall not push, charge, cross-check or body check an opponent from behind.
PENALTY - Minor or major at discretion of the referee.
b. Hitting from behind into the side boards, end boards or goal cage is a flagrant violation.
PENALTY - Major and game misconduct or disqualification.
[/q]Gleed's hit was definitely into the boards.  So based on 6.23(b) the ref was required to give him either a game misconduct or a disqualification.  From the various accounts it was appropriate to only give the misconduct, not the DQ.

A-19

I was way too far away to see the actual hit. But I can attest that Gleed's hit did NOT give Ihnacak (clearly a misspelling of Ithaca) that black eye. During warmups, it was clear to see the shiner, which we teased him about.

KeithK

If you've got your helmet on properly, wouldn't it be hard to get a black eye while wearing a face mask?
