What is the NCAA record for ties in one year?

dOwns

Thoughts on game..

*We played very badly. ::worry:: We had noo motivation.. could it be because Ben was off? I think we played terribly. Once in a while we played well, hustled, things of that nature, but we really needed much more energy. But on the bright side, a tie is better than a loss.. it really is. But I'm kinda sick of freakin tieing every game..

First, a question: anyone know what happened to Pegoraro tonight?  Obviously, as you all know already, Varteressian was in for him, subsequently shuffling the third and fourth lines a bit.

Now, some comments:

- I think I'm in the minority with this opinion, but the Union goal was really just a lucky bounce off Cook's stick.  The puck was deflected slightly right of where McKee expected it to go.
- Union had a pretty good defense, and it was present throughout most of the game.  Keeping Cornell to one goal really was no fluke.
- Varteressian is an animal.  He was out there busting heads (not literally) for most of the game.  He's like the Hornby of old, only bigger.
- Our defense was solid for the whole game.
- Can anyone give any more details on the waved-off goal?  We all heard "crease violation" but was that true?

Is next year here yet?

I thought I heard Adam say something about Pegoraro being "banged up."  Schafer specifically mentioned that Wallace was hurt.

Couldn't tell on the internet TV broadcast what happened on the waved-off goal, and there's no slo-mo replay.

My thought from seeing the wave-off on the netcast was that the net was pushed off before the light went on.  Now, that doesn't mean it was pushed off before the puck actually crossed the line (something you couldn't see very well online).

My initial impression was that it was going to be waved off, but I tend towards pessimism.

I think we escaped a team playing at the top of their game in front of a hot goalie, and still eeked out a point.  I'll take it -- we could easily have left both points on the ice.  Also, RPI lost and Dartmouth tied, so while it would have been nice to gain more ground against those >.500 rivals, at least we lost no ground.

Lynah's a tomb tonight.[/Q]How right you were. Even the band was not up to speed. There were many breaks where they just did nothing. Somehow they have to get it together and get the rest of the crowd going. At the end it was so bad that I actually started yelling "Townies up".

The goal was called off because of a man in the crease. Although I'm at the other end, it looked possible to me, we had guys right out in front. How about anybody in A, thoughts?

I thought we played the first 3/4's like we did at Brown, uninspired. We seem to have forgotten how to hit and work the corners.[Q]One of the guys who got revenge on Volonnino wrote:

He seemed to want to make the most of his opportunity, and was one of the best hitters. However, taking Carefoot off the fourth line definately made that line less effective. We need to get back to basics, hit, work the corners, and get the kind of goals that we scored tonight. All year it seems that we know we have better offensive talent than in past years and try and finese it instead of working hard.

One last thing. The talk has been how we had 5 games in hand and needed 7 points, now it's 4 and 6. However, we really needed 8 points, now 7, because Brown has the season series with us. Getting 7 points in the next 4 games will be tough, very tough. We also have to look for Dartmouth not to pass us, those series will be very important.

A second last thing, after it's all said and done, they are alot further ahead than I thought they would be at this point. Being able to think about first is more than I expected this year.

We also seem to miss a lot of nets... at times it seems that everyone's trying to put the puck in the top corner of the net, rather than shooting it low and through traffic. Another result of that is that a lot of our shots that do get on net are right at the goalie's chest. (Moulson had a very good attempt at tipping a point shot, and Hynes takes up the front of the net well, but it'd be nice to station players there more often, like Bitz.)

McCloud also didn't play... when's the last time he was in the lineup? He and Pegoraro came over to watch some of the third period at the edge of section B (they didn't really blend in in their suits and slicked hair).

What do people think of Salmela?  He seems to be out there for his heavy shot from the point (and because we can't seem to get Gleed and Wallace healthy at the same time).  I haven't seen him do much on D, but I haven't seen him make any grotesque mistakes eithers.

The Vesce breakaway seems to indicate that the hockey gods have decreed that we'll never score a shorty again...  ::help::

7 of the next 8 points does look very difficult, but Mike should be able to get the message across that it's just one shift at a time.  The problem last night was: Union won most of the shifts.  Unthinkable, but true.

ice the puck

We tied a team that  followed their coach's game plan on defense with a deep trap.  He just installed it for us.  Union goalie was exceptional, and we missed about four "sure"goals ' by inches.  Although we looked back on our heels for the first and part of the second periods, we played good defense, and could have won.  That's hockey!  There was a time it looked like we would get beat 1-0.  I'll take the point, bring on RPI!!

Saw Salmela play live in Estero ( and TV vs. Harvard) and thought he looked very steady out there.  He doesn't seem to be making the freshman mistakes or committing bad penalties, which I've seen from O'Byrne and to a lesser extent Glover.   The others may have more upside (certainly the Habs think that with O'Byrne), but at this point I like what I've seen from Salmela.

Gotta agree about Salmela.  I hope he has a chance to play once Wallace is back to 100% (assuming all the other defensemen are also at 100%).

Is next year here yet?

Regarding McLeod, I just checked the box scores from collegehockeystats.com and he's not mentioned once (not even for US Under-18).  I also checked the roster flyers handed out at the Red & White game, and he is mentioned there, playing for the Red team.  Unfortunately for him, he's probably at the bottom of the forwards list, after Varteressian.
