Sorry about the non-sports topic, but I just read in my local paper that the main mission scientist for the Mars mission is Steven Squyres, and the main scientist for the rover camera team is Jim Bell, both from Cornell.
There's some very big red out there....

Actually, Squyres was on Nova regarding the Mars mission this past Sunday on PBS.  I missed the follow-up show last night, tho.

Let's go red (planet)!

Not off-topic at all.  Steven Squyres co-authored "Analysis of Phobos Mission Gamma-Ray Spectra from Mars: Two Approaches" with a group who included our own esteemed John Whelan: http://www.loyno.edu/~jtwhelan/papers/

(And my fiancee just (5 minutes ago) got back from a meeting with NASA head Sean O'Keefe.)

Right on!
My head is still spinning from his presentation at the Frozen Four last year  ::nut:: ;-)

I was actually in Ithaca for a Hahvahd-Brown weekend, staying with Steve Squyres, a few days after the Mars rover mission got approved.  Pretty wild seeing him on TV every day.

Especially weird seeing him in a clip on the Daily Show tonight...  :-P

Hey Hahvahd, Mars called, it said YOU SUCK.

Venus called.  She said, you swallow.

And she'd know.

Hey Hahvahd!  Uranus called ... it said "Ouch!"

I took Prof. Squyres' Space Exploration class my senior year.  It was fascinating, and since a great deal of the class time was spent discussing this mission, its been fun to watch it play out.  I'm very happy for him that it has been so successful to this point.

If he teaches that class in the future, I recommend it to any current/future students.  His classroom style is just as passionate as his press appearances.  He also presents the material so a Government major like me can understand it.

How slow can he possibly talk? ;-)

Spirit rolls out early tomorrow morning (and SS was on Morning Edition again today).

Steve Squyres is the one on the right.

Are you sure that's not after we pulled out the win over Harvard in December?  ;-)
