Quote from: BearLover on October 27, 2026, 12:47:19 AMSaw Michael Dec had 6 goals and 8 points in 3 games this past week, went to check his Instagram and all mentions of Cornell/his commitment post appear to have been deleted. Hopefully just a coincidence because I would really prefer to not lose our best forward recruit two years in a row due to the coaching staff not bringing him in when they could have. (Dec had much better junior stats than several forwards who matriculated this year, and easily could have come this season.) Aside from Emerton (D), Dec is our only recruit for next year I'm particularly excited about.
ouch. It doesnt sound good.

If we did lose him, hopefully he'll play for BC.

Dec is still listed as a Cornell commit on Heisenberg, but the Instagram info is concerning.

Heisenberg probably gets most of his information second-hand from team websites etc. Speaking of which, the Erie Otters website still lists Dec as committed. But these websites might not get updated right away, so I'm still very concerned.

I'm going to hold off on my rant until the decommitment is confirmed. I am still holding out hope. But if you are interested in a preview of this hypothetical rant, I believe this is a screwup substantially stupider than the Pelletier one. And yes, I will address how I know it was likely a screwup by the coaching staff.

As you know nothing about either situation, why don't you just shut up?

Sorry, buddy. Feel free to not read my posts. But given that, in consecutive offseasons, we lose our best recruit in the same sequence of events, I am going to offer my thoughts in a thread about hockey recruiting on a Cornell sports forum.

No one can stop you from being an ass in public.

Take it from one who knows.

The Rancor

5'9" and 160 lbs is not ready to come to Cornell, or any D1 school. He's scoring well, and hopefully matriculates in Ithaca, but the coaches can't bring him in at that size and without another season in Juniors. Sucks if he goes away, and I really hope he doesn't. But undersized and not ready for D1, yet. See you in 2027 Dec.

Hes probably gone, and that's very bad, outdated to look at height weight.

I'm very curious to know if Casey chose not to bring in Pelletier and him in before they decommitted or if they asked to go back another year/decommitted beforehand. If it has been Casey's choice, he has legitimately cost us some good players and needs to rethink his philosophy.

Otherwise, it's just bad luck that two guys bailed on us, but still could show that we need to be closer with our recruits.

On the other hand you could argue that we don't want guys that decommit if they have to wait, but that's bullshit.

Both these guys committed before Casey was at Cornell right?  Isn't it possible that Casey might have decided to decommit them, not for ability, but for either his assessment of their likely to buy into his system or whether they be solved citizens etc?

It's one thing if Casey was the guy who recruited the folks would be committed it's another thing all together when they were recruited by the previous regime and they are committing based on arriving with a new coach I think in these cases there are just so many more possibilities then simple ability or readiness.

I have no knowledge at all of whether this is what happened but as we all know from the work world or going to colleges or whatever it may be that for any job or college program they are far more people who are qualified then get the slot and a lot of times it comes down to fit more than pure ability.

Tldr: it's hard enough to know what went on with easy commits even in a situation where the current coach recruited them.  But to try and figure it out when Casey wasn't the guy who recruited them? That's just adding too many variables to the guessing equation.

Is there something like the internet archive that captures historical Twitter data? It would be interesting to see when Dec's commitment post was taken down.

I would be shocked if Casey cared more about buy in than Schafer, I don't think it's possible
