Back to back 3-4 conference finishes probably ranks him in the top 20% of Cornell coaches all-time.

Seriously. I think we'd all sign for 3-4 ivy wins every year and occasional meaningful games in late November. Perennial mediocrity would be a big improvement.

I definitely wouldn't sign up  for that. The goal is to win the Ivy, not be mediocre every year.

being a bit literal there. eventually we'd all find it frustrating but in light of recent incompetence I'm inclined to give him a longer runway unless his four-class teams backslide to Archer levels.

It's both a Cornell and a coaching problem.   I went to the game on Saturday and we barely in our seats and Cornell was down 14-0 in the first quarter.   Agreed Colgate is a better team and they were on their fourth game, but I thought we would at least be somewhat competitive.   As per my prior post, Cornell is very competitive in both ice hockey and lacrosse, meanwhile we alums are giving money to football year after year with literally no progress.   In the second half Colgate was trying not to run up the score, as they played very conservatively running the ball to eat up the clock.  Agreed our other football coaches have not been very good either, but look at Colgate as their coach is in his second season and they are 4-0.   Why didn't Cornell hire that coach???

Colgate is the 2nd best team and possibly the best in the Patriot League.  Colgate can offer scholarships, and has less restrictive admission requirements. BTW, Colgate is 3-1 and that coach wasn't left with the mess of a program that Archer made in 12 years heading the football program.  I get it you are frustrated, but your expectations of being in the top tier in the Ivy League in year 3 at Cornell is not realistic. The bigger question is why the athletic department and the administration stuck with Archer for 12 years. Not the hiring of coach Swanstrom.
