Great News! 

Over the Chirstmas [Winter] Break Coach Jones will be Assistant Coach for the U.S. Collegiate Selects in the Spangler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.  (Mike Sousa of UNH is Head Coach and Scott Sandelin of Minnesota Duluth is the other Assistant.)

That's a little tight for the early January Omaha game . . . but maybe promises adding UNH and UMD to the schedule.  I would love to see us play UMD in the Frozen Apple.

I recall Walsh's travelogue getting back from Davos for the Omaha series last year...

Assuming they make the finals (12/31), it's unlikely they travel home the same day unless they do it by a private jet.

Recall last year, our Omaha series was the 2nd and 3rd. This gave them the leeway to take off on the 1st for the intl flight and then the 2nd do the regional flights. Walsh got back to Ithaca at like, 3:30 pm the day of the Omaha series, as per McNally. I've heard it was even thornier than that 😅

Assuming similar, that they would fly most likely from Zurich on the 1st of January, I don't see a way Casey would get to Omaha for the Jan 1st game. Jan 2nd, sure, but Jan 1st we'll likely see an assistant take the reins.

AA is your best bet. Expect a connection through PHL, DCA, or CLT. I travel a lot with AA for work and leisure and have been to New Orleans enough times the past few years.

AA is your best bet. Expect a connection through PHL, DCA, or CLT. I travel a lot with AA for work and leisure and have been to New Orleans enough times the past few years.

That is what I anticipated and dreaded.  We were stuck overnight in Dallas on the 28th because of their computer glitch.

I mean, see aforementioned Star Alliance allegiance. I'll always say UA for that reason.

The real answer, however, is generally "the airline you usually fly, unless cost, connections, etc are worth it". Unless you almost never fly, in which case, just get the cheapest flight you can.

The family (well, my mom and I, my dad doesn't travel) is a Star Alliance family mostly because that's the main way to get in and out of Poland - Lufthansa (and their Austrian and Swiss affiliates) and LOT Polish are both SA. The other options would be British or a budget airline, both of which are way less flexible. It also helps that EWR, our home airport, is a UA - but not Delta or AA - hub.

I get a lot "more" out of flying United for that reason - miles I can put towards trips to Poland to see family, status benefits like extra checked bags, money and flight segments towards maintaining status, free rebooking/cancelling, things like that. Plus, when I've got a travel issue (happens basically every time, I'm cursed), my mom, who has super high UA status because she travels a ton, makes one phone call to the UA 1K service desk and they usually find me a solution. That's why I'm generally going to be flying UA or Star Alliance unless the price is so much cheaper that I can't pass it up - which hasn't happened yet, in my experience.

ALB to MSY is a flight between two nonhubs. Whichever airline you pick, you're going to be going from ALB to a hub and from that hub to MSY. I don't see a direct flight available.

Most of the hard product between the three major airlines is effectively the same, especially in economy. Soft product is also really similar. Going budget (Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest) means a jankier experience but the same end result.

Ultimately, you just want to get from point A to point B, and the airline wants to sell you their credit card.

So my real advice is just "take the cheapest flight that works for you".

One thing I will note - ORD has had a lot of taxi delays recently. Would not recommend a connection under 2 hours there simply because if you get hit with a 30+ minute delay from landing to gate, and then have to run across ORD to catch your next flight, it will suck. And note that the wheels-down/wheels-up times do not correspond to when doors open and close - if my flight lands at 12:30 and my next one takes off at 1:30, I'm probably getting off the plane at 12:40-45 (depending on where I sit) and the doors close at 1:15.

Nice to see another Star Alliance flyer.  Newark is also my airport of choice since I live about 75 miles from there - a quick shot up I-78.

I have lifetime gold status on United/Star Alliance, thanks to all those flights to Asia when I was still working. That's good for eliminating bag fees when traveling domestically, and sometimes even internationally, which is worth 80-100 dollars on a given itinerary. I also get to hang out in the lounges when traveling internationally. Plus when you're flying to Asia, like I still occasionally do, having Singapore Air in your alliance is rather nice.  ANA and Thai are also quite pleasant.
