Just saw the team picture- they definitely all decided to share a bottle of bleach as a goof.

It's a semi-common playoff tradition among younger guys (who often can't grow beards yet). I think I recall seeing a few youth teams dye pink, but blond is a standard. Only thing that was throwing me off was that the blonds were all different shades - except if it was bleach and not dye, that would make sense, LOL.

My son's HS soccer team did the same thing for the playoffs back in the day

My wife and I were picking up my mother-in-law at McGraw House (an apartment complex for seniors) yesterday afternoon. At the elevator a woman was talking about just having gotten back from her grandson's playoff hockey game. I injected myself into the conversation, saying, "They won 6-0, right?" (Never would have known were it not for you, Stereax.) The woman was surprised I knew the score and asked if I had been at the game. I explained I was not at the game, but had been seeing updates. Apparently her grandson scored the sixth goal.

That would've been number 12! And it was a hell of a goal too. Wish I had a replay on hand, it was a trickler that went straight through the goalie. Interestingly enough - at least on the IHS website - that looks like the only goal he scored in his three years of varsity hockey.

And you're welcome for picking up brownie points with the McGraw residents :D

My son's Ithaca Youth Hockey Peewee team got their heads shaved in Canton NY when we were there for the state championship tournament.  No one told the parents that this was the plan, other than the one dad who paid the barber. It worked....Most of the kids on the team went on to win a state championship for the high school as well.

stereax -- I loved your description of the game as it brought back 20 years of memories.  I had two boys play hockey at IHS, and The Rink was constructed during that time.  It may be inconvenient to get to but it was a godsend when the alternative was early morning ice time at Lynah or sharing the Cass Park rink with everyone else who wanted to skate.  The Rink was built in large part by community volunteers with funds contributed by the community.

It's not that bad to get to walkwise, really. (Though I'm used to walking about a mile to get home from Lynah without the bus or to and from trivia, so my definitions are skewed. At least Lansing is pretty flat.) The main issue is the bus only swings by a couple times and if you miss it, you're pretty much stranded. It's only like 10 minutes' driving from the Commons, though.

And - yeah. You can kinda tell that the Rink is built on youth hockey and memories.

...One of my friends was talking to me about this a while back - the concept of sports as religion, of rinks/arenas as places of worship. Lynah has a sense of outward "holiness", in that view; you walk through it and get flattened with the sheer amount of history lining the walls and tradition in the pews.

But I think the Rink also has a touch of that spirituality in it - the banners, sure, but also the homeliness. Just a small, local, generally nonassuming spot. The seating is basically just a bunch of panels drilled together; the sponsors hang from the walls; "Thank You, Senator Michael Nozzolio" is plastered around the edges of the rink. And yet there's a gentle thrum of energy there, too. Remember the past, look to the future. Give the kids a place to play and they'll give you something you won't forget.

We sold a lot of candy bars to get that Rink. (found my father's name on the donor wall a few years ago, he never mentioned that he'd given money for the build.)

let's test the limits of eLynah...

I think the last time I was at the Rink was when they had either an alumni game or the charity game there because Lynah was being renovated. So at least I can say I've seen Joe Nieuwendyk and a couple other NHLers play in Lansing.

Say less... (Sidenote - thanks SO much for keeping up with the schedule, that's giving me fits!)

Today, I learn why people like blueberry pancakes.

Holy crap these things are excellent. I need more excuses to come up to Lansing because hot damn are these pancakes addictive. (Staff absolutely remembered me too, but I cut a distinctive silhouette in my Cornell red and my "what are the two things on the menu without eggs in them", so.) Lansing would be pretty nice to live at, too... if I had a car.

Already been mistaken for an actress from Trumansburg today, so that's fun. Apparently, as per some of the other regulars, you're not supposed to order two pancakes because there's no way you'll finish them. Uh... oops?

Anywho, hanging out at the Rink right now before the gates officially open. Last week I apparently slinked in early and somehow avoided ticket checks. (I bought one for last week, for the record. And I have one for today too.)

There's a gaggle of elementary schoolers playing ball hockey around the concourse, which is deeply endearing. Also, a flock of bright blond haired teenage boys was spotted migrating around outside 😂

Anywho, I'll probably do my per-period updates like last week :)

The Pittsford backup goalie has rainbow stripes on his helmet.

I'm... feeling a lot about that.

...In other news, your First Period Programming:

There's apparently a bird living at the Rink? At least, it was flying around the rafters outside the Rink and inside the building.

They did actual warmups today! Yay. I love warmups.

I assume the stick banging is just a high school hockey Thing. Or maybe just our team?

Pittsford looks a lot better than BC. This is gonna be a Game.

Have been besieged on both sides by girls with iced coffees who are clearly friends. Not sure why they aren't just all sitting together given there is AMPLE space to my right, but. Relatedly, my decision to put on an undershirt below my usual shirt is paying dividends, as I'm not bundled up freezing in my jacket.

Game's a little more physical than last week.

NICE SAVE BY OUR GOALIE THERE. I have the program now so I can tell you that is Whittaker. But the D lost his guy so the Pittsford player walked in all alone.

We're spending a LOT of time in our zone. Which generally does not bode well.

Puck fell in the backside of their net, a Pittsford player jabbed his stick at it and it popped right out. First time I've seen that move.

Nice chance by 20 - Walker - up front. Quickly turns into a run the other way. Big hit against the boards and now our 21 - Singer - is sitting for I presume interference. Nope, tripping.

Penalty against Pittsford. Their 57. High stick. That makes it 4 on 4. I'm getting Looks from the girls for my usual "calls" (like "send it", "cover").

Scrum in front of the net. Their 22 to the box. Holding. 4 on 3 for us.

Our 11 - Swarthout - had an EXCELLENT shot, just high. He's in disbelief.

WIDE open back door for 9 - Cosgrove - and he can't get it. Shorthanded breakaway, our goalie stops it. The guy who went on it went down. Our 28 gets a minor for a hold. Their 57 out. This game is crazy.

Their 22 out. 1:12 of PK for us. Much like Cornell on the PK, the Ithaca kids also can't get a screener out of the way.

EXCELLENT series of saves by Whittaker! Post to post, damn.

Back to evens.

Our 19 - Gabriel - delivers a MASSIVE check. That Pittsford guy might be hurt. Ow. 19 to the box and the Pittsfordians are talking to the refs. 2 minutes for head contact. (Guys behind me: "THAT'S HOCKEY! The refs think we're playing tennis!" Bro hit to the head is 5 in the NCAA 😭)

I don't think I've seen our 5 - the Griffin Levine guy - today. Makes sense. He was HURTING after the hit at the end of last game. Poor dude.

After 1:

ITH 0-0 PIT
SOG 10-14
