Quote from: Trotsky on November 22, 2025, 02:12:46 AMThe first question is was it student attendance down or all attendance?  For students that means either something else conflicted (Early on a Friday night?  Doubtful.  Or perhaps The New Prudery means they're all tucked in by 11 now.) or they split to go home for Thanksgiving a week early (which seems unlikely to me, that's blowing off 4 full days of classes and Saturday labs).

The only thing I have ever seen put a dent in townie attendance was dangerous weather.
As a student, I can confirm at least some people are indeed "blowing off class" early. Saw people with suitcases on the airport buses, plus the Flixbus circuit is buzzing right now.

We get Wed-Thurs-Fri off. So skip 2 days of class and you have over a week of break. Especially if you don't live in NY/NJ/PA, that's a lot. I know people at the law school who've flat out told me that's their plan, haha.

Y'all also have to understand that C can be BARREN at the beginning of the game. People migrate in from other sections, I'm almost positive of it. Like last week, M was full to start the game and C was mostly empty; come third period, noticeable gaps in M and I'm fighting for my own seat to sit down during intermission.

Will also second that the cowbell guy fucking sucks. But also, I thought it was just known that once cowbell guy stops playing the cowbell you yell things. Like how you can't hear the telephone chant, 'cause nobody with a pair of lungs does it anymore, but you still join in on the YOU SUCK part of it.

As for the alma mater, pretty sure it was in honor of the HOF inductees, but they weren't gonna play it during the lady's announcements. So they did it after.

O was empty today. L-M-N were mostly full. F-J had large gaps as usual. This all from my photo roll.

It's also a Friday game against Union, which doesn't sound like a fun game unless you know college puck. And if 3000 students knew college puck, we wouldn't be in this situation.

I'll also point out that winning the ECACs and making the dance means next to nothing to the people who showed up to Lynah last year to watch the team habitually forget to play hockey in the regular season. Those March games weren't at Lynah. If you're a "casual" fan whose greatest memory of last year was getting drubbed by Dartmouth, makes sense you'd rather spend your Friday night doing something else. Plus, in the age of ESPN+, I could just as well watch the game from the comfort of my own home. Or any other game, in any other sport.

I dunno. I keep bringing my friends when I can convince them to come - that's all I can do, really.

There are still 76/332 season tickets available in E, btw. And ticket prices for the student sections tomorrow are $17, with prices for the other sections between $23 and $27. I dunno, is this supremely expensive? It's like the price of two drinks at a bar. I think. I don't drink, lol.

Also also, if anyone's reading this from Cornell Athletics, it would be really cool to have had the option to four-pack the Omaha/Alaska games that aren't included in the season tickets. That's gonna put me back $68 for four games where nobody's going to show up anyway. Probably $80 if/when I take the flex cancel option, given that I don't know my holiday plans besides vague concepts of Poland to see family for Christmas.

You know, let me at least lock down my seat now. Bleh.

$209 for season tickets. Almost $70 for the four games OVER WINTER BREAK that will have crap attendance anyway.

Ugh. And the site is busted. If you back out after selecting a seat, it greys that seat out for everyone else. Including yourself. I'll see if it clears up in an hour or two... Fuck. I need to go back to bed.

Update - seems the seat greys out for some 15 minutes. Tickets purchased. Still annoyed though lol. Dear God, can I have one solid night of sleep.

Yup: the Friday before Thanksgiving week is definitely the new unofficial "start" of the break for many students.

When I was an undergrad in the early aughts, it was still risqué to skip out any earlier than the day before actual Thanksgiving. Class was still technically in session until Thurs/Fri, and a few of the hard-ass profs were happy to issue penalties for anyone who missed even Wednesday, let alone earlier.

Why didn't they give him #XV..?

Is it just the student season tickets that doesn't offer those games?
My pops has regular season tickets and those games are included

Correct: townie season tickets include all the winter break games.

Tiny nit with an otherwise typically stellar Jane report:

  • Jones paired senior forward Nick DeSantis with junior forward Jake Kraft and Castagna

You "pair" one thing with one other thing. There isn't really a corresponding verb specifically for three things, so I get it, but there are plenty of verbs for combining three or more.

I shall now return to shooing kids off my nonexistent lawn and rejoicing in Cornell's performance thus far.

That was a really well fought game between two pretty even teams.  The process remains the same for Cornell.  Get a feel for the opponent in the first, devise an adjustment to the game plan in the intermission and then get to work.  That first period was probably Cournoyer's roughest one of the season and Union still only put one past him.  Plus it was a power play goal through traffic.  He looked a bit tentative playing the puck and there were a few saves where the rebound squirted away from him.  I got dizzy with all of those odd man rushes that Union had in that first.  If Union had been able to connect on a pass on one of those plays it could have been a different game.  I really liked the aggressive penalty kill of Castagna and Kraft.  They were all over the Union D at the blue line and it wasn't until they went off and the second pk unit came on that Union had room to operate and cash in.  The Cornell players did a terrific job all night of keeping plays alive in all three zones with their active sticks.  This game ended up being dozens of small plays that added up to the win.  Winning the faceoff on a set play that resulted in the Veilleux goal or doing the same exact thing after the late icing where Veilleux got off the shot but it was high. Charlie Major (great to have him back) going in on the forcheck and stripping that guy before sniping that beautiful goal.  Then in the third he did that spin-o-rama where he passed the puck off the boards to himself and kept the play deep in the Union zone.  Even a play in the second by Veilleux where at the end of a shift he fires it in on net from the neutral zone to force a faceoff as opposed to just dumping it in before going off.  Lots of smart decisions by guys throughout the lineup.  Whoever it was that was calling for them to block more shots should have been pleased last night.  There were a bunch of guys going all out.  That was a nice grind them down game over the last forty minutes.  It should really come in handy later in the season to know they can win games like that.

Quote from: sah67 on November 21, 2025, 08:24:06 PMWalsh sells a pretty obvious Union hook, but Carusone decides to just call him for embellishment and not the hook  >:(

I did not like that play at all by Walsh.  I'm sure he was getting frustrated because there wasn't a lot of room to operate out there all night but he needs to try and skate all the way through that.  They were not calling much of anything and that's what that game deserved.  You can't make it that easy for the refs.  I'm glad the boys picked up their captain by killing it off.  Then he came out of the box and had his best chance of the night. Hopefully we don't see him do that again

I truly believe the ice contributed to Walsh's fall. In the five minutes or so preceding that play, I saw Cornell players in that general vicinity "trip over the blue line" twice. In real time, I thought both players were likely to be penalized.

It was odd but Tony Eisenhutt thought it was Union's aggressiveness that caused the falling - he was commenting on Jason wondering if it was the ice.

Yeah, we don't get 'em included 'cause it's understood I guess that most students will be off campus for the holidays. But hey, instead of $219 they were "only" $209 this year. Grumble grumble.

Same.  There were ENG profs who scheduled Prelims Tues prior to Thanksgiving and did not care to elaborate.

One of my best Cornell memories is taking the red eye bus to Port Authority late Wed night, arriving at about 1am, and walking across the completely empty city to get to the LIRR station in time to pull out on the first morning train on the (then) Huntington line.  In the memorable line from Guys and Dolls, "This is the only time in Manhattan when you can hear your own footsteps."

Even the working girls were chill.

It was as blatant of a dive as it can get.  The Union player was draped all over him as he entered the zone and when he saw they weren't going to call it he went down.  They weren't calling much of anything last night.  Stanley tripped a guy on the Long penalty and I actually thought he was gonna go.  That took away a legitimate scoring chance on the delayed penalty.  They mostly put the whistles away.  It was a bad decision by Walsh
