We were never going anywhere without Melly and Johnson who played almost the entirety of the minutes at center back. Doesn't make it any less frustrating of a loss though. I feel for Friedberg having that mistake be the end of his time with us. Good luck to all of the seniors and hopefully Miller stays.

Miss finishers like Harris and Ka.

While it's always tough when a good season ends and you think it could've gone further, I'd like to recognize the amazing job Smith has done turning a dormant program into a consistent top 20ish team that plays a fan-friendly style. I'm optimistic the team can make a further tournament run in the next several seasons.

Princeton's also out, giving up 2 goals in the last 20 minutes to lose to Duke, 2-1.

our biggest problem today was size. they were beating us on set pieces on both sides of the field and far more confident in them to boot. we were "better" everywhere except where it mattered most: inside the box.

Congratulations to Cornell on another fine season; it's been fun to (casually, and as you'll see below, not closely) follow the team and I hope they continue to improve.

The current tournament seems wide open--of the eight top seeds, only three (4 Maryland, 7 Georgetown, 8 Portland) remain.  You could lament Cornell not being part of it, but I gather we were missing some of our top players?

I know most of us have moved on, but this year's mens' final 4 is:  15 Seed NC State, 16 Furman, Washington and St. Louis.  And, of course, Vermont won last year.

If we can maintain our current level of success, which is easy for me to say, a deep run in soccer is possible.

The NCAA soccer tournament seems about the most wide open of all the NCAA championships. We have the capability of getting to a final four, but you need some lucky bounces along the way.

Unseeded Washington wins the natty. If we keep putting up good seasons and getting into the tournament we're gonna put together a good run one of these years, soccer is just so random.

I came across this list of recruits.

It looks like we are doing very well on that front. If you are, like me, worried about Miller leaving for the MLS, don't be, we have a Mexico U17 and MLS next pro player coming in. He's a CDM so not a perfect replica of Miller but the midfield should be fine for the foreseeable future no matter what.

Friedberg leaving after being a four year starter also leaves a big hole. What to do? Well don't sweat it, we have two guys coming in with MLS next pro experience. First is Reuben Clarson who played one game for Atlanta United II, and appears to wear the Petr Cech helmet, which is hilarious. Also coming in is Ethan Scally, who, despite what you may expect from the name, plays for the Japan U17s and has a couple games of MLS next pro experience too.

The track record of players that played in MLS next pro before coming here is very good. The only two that I know of are Connor Miller and Aidan Martin, who have both been massive pieces of the team from the jump. And, of course, there are always going to be guys that didn't play MLS next pro that come out of nowhere too, like Alex Harris did.

Overall, this is a tremendous recruiting class, having two recruits on top 15 U17 nationals teams and three recruits with MLS next pro experience is insane, and I am sure unprecedented for this program.

I truly think that John Smith is the best coach at this school, even over Buczek and Derraugh. The way he has turned this program around from the punching bag of the Ivy League to a consistent national presence is so impressive. I have no idea what his contract situation looks like but I really hope Moore and the athletic department can keep him here for a long time, it seems like he really is special, in terms of both X's and O's coaching as well as recruiting.

Do you think soccer is more or less random than hockey? Fewer scoring chances in soccer but also fewer fluky goals.

Id say soccer is more random. The last 2 years unseeded teams (bottom 32 of the 48 team field) have won the NCAA tournament, and the top seeds rarely even make it to the final four.

Strong words!  I think most of us have forgotten how terrible our women's hockey team was before Doug.  But fully agree that John Smith is outstanding at his job.

Just realized the super draft is today. I don't know anything about it really but I would guess that Miller gets picked pretty high and Friedberg goes undefeated again.

chimpfood

Both go undrafted, good for our chances of a Miller return I hope.
