TIL that Saurabh Netravalkar, who bowled the "Super Over" (a cross between a shootout and 3x3 overtime) that completed the USA's upset of Pakistan in Texas last Thursday in the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup, has a Master's degree from Cornell (and a day job as a software engineer).  The USA beat Canada in the opening match, so they're tied for first in their group with India, whom they play tomorrow at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.(*)  Unfortunately, ESPN didn't get the broadcast contract for this tournament, so it's only available on the streaming service Willow TV.  It's only $10 for the month, but most Americans probably don't even know about it.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were some Cornellians on one or more of the other teams, but Netravalkar is the one I know about.

(*) The International Cricket Council are pretending these games are in New York, but the cricket club in the Bronx wouldn't let them build a temporary stadium in Van Cortlandt Park, so they did it at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Long Island.  We saw the Netherlands-South Africa match there on Saturday (having failed to get tickets to a match involving India); it was pretty nice, although I wish the ICC had let us select our seats so our two groups of four could sit together.  Most of the matches are actually in the Caribbean, but since the USA are co-hosting with the West Indies, some of the early games are in New York, Texas and Florida.

FWIW India eked out a win against Pakistan so its possible that we win this one too.

I'm holding out more hope for a win over Ireland on Friday than India.  Either would put the USA into the next round.  (A rain-out would also do the job, which, considering it's June in Florida...)

considering half of florida is getting 10-20 inches of rain from now to friday as well.

I feel like a real asshole now for complaining about cricket having the ramin room at all the good times during the winter.

So Netravalkar took the wickets of legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but on the downside he dropped what would have been a very important catch, as the USA lost a close match to India.  It goes down as "India won by 7 wickets" but what's more important is that they scored 111 runs in 18 overs and 2 balls, while USA made 110 in all 20 overs.  (An over is 6 balls.)

In the end, three of the four matches scheduled in Florida were cancelled because it was too wet to play.  Ireland-Pakistan came off on Sunday, but by that point both teams had been eliminated by the USA-Ireland washout.

That's great.  I got a trial subscription to Fubo to watch the first week of Euro 2024, but the monthly subscription would be 8x what I'm paying for Willow alone.  But hopefully this means people who've signed up for the month for the soccer will take interest in the cricket.

The USA did make it into the next round, which kicks off 10:30 Wednesday morning against South Africa.  The Proteas should be favorites, but they did just beat Nepal by only one run the other night.

I think my Fubo trial in March lasted only 2 days.  Do you know if there is a code to receive a week's trial?
"When we came off, [Bitz] said, 'Thank God you scored that goal,'" Moulson said. "He would've killed me if I didn't."

I just went to the fubo.tv site, and that was the trial that was available.
