Hobey Humanitarian

Regardless of what happens next week, it is great to have both a Hobey Baker finalist, and a Humanitarian award finalist, (when was the last time that happened?) as well as at least one All-American. While many people may downgrade Lenny's performance as being due to a great defense, those of us who have seen him play know that he is the real deal. There are always people who will complain unless their entire team gets nominated.

I suppose we could say that the only reason Kunitz and Sejna score so many goals is because they are in a high-scoring league. If they were to play in the ECAC against great defenses, their numbers would be much lower because they would have fewer shots. And how ridiculous does that sound?

I do find it ironic that everyone keeps saying Lenny's great numbers are due in large part to the great defense in front of him, yet none of his defenders have really been individually recognized except for Murray. I believe that last year he was a finalist only because his offensive production was so good. This year he was the best defenseman on the best defensive team in the country and he didn't get recognized. I'm not saying he should have, I just find it interesting. When will people recognize good defenseman for just being...defensive.::rolleyes::

This would be a good time to ask...Does anyone know when/where the award presentations will be?  I attended the 2001 Humanitarian/Hobey ceremonies in Albany, and it was pretty cool.  The general public was allowed into a hotel banquet room for free, and I hope that's still the case.

Actually, with a little work, I've answered my own question:

[Q]The Hobey Baker Award recipient will be announced on Friday, April 11, 2003 from the Hyatt Regency Hotel Ballroom in Buffalo, NY, during the NCAA Frozen Four weekend. The announcement will be carried live on Fox Sports Net beginning at 2:30 pm ET – please check your local listings.[/Q]

However, the Humanitarian website hasn't been updated since last year. http://www.hockeyhumanitarian.org/index2.html
I remember the Humanitarian is awarded in a ceremony about an hour before the Hobey is at the same place.

Quite admirable restraint.  Even if, now that I've seen Cornell play a few games (Princeton, Harvard, MSUM, BC), I think you are wrong.

Humanitarian is 2pm to 2:25
Hobey 2:30 to 3:00
both at Hyatt Regency

I believe USCHO.com's Town Hall Meeting, which they started two years ago in Albany, will precede the Humanitarian Award and Hobey Baker Award presentations at the Hyatt as well.  As for getting into the award festivities, two years ago they gave out free tickets at various important venues around the city.  I would expect the Hyatt, the Adams Mark and the Convention Center to be places where one could pick up tickets.  What would really be neat would be to present the awards between the two games on Thursday on the ice in front of 18,000 fans but then what would we do with the off Friday.

Is the arena not one of the places where they distribute the tickets for Friday's events?

Damn I'm up early.  Must be all the FF excitement.  I don't know about ticket distribution.  I know that in the past seating has been limited.  The room at the Empire State Plaza in 2001 was pretty big.  In 1998 in Boston, they held it at Faneuil Hall (the historic building, not Quincy Market which surrounds it) and they were charging for tickets in advance because of the limited space.  What a neat venue, especially when the home town team has the Hobey winner.  This is as close as we'll get to being the home town team.

I didn't pay for a ticket to see the Hobey presentation in Boston and don't think anyone did, but tickets were needed to control the size of the crowd.  I was there with my son and we had "standby" ticketing and just got in.

By the time Saturday night rolled around I was so tired from dragging myself around Boston and Cambridge that I didn't enjoy the game as much as I should have.  The game went OT and because the next day was Palm Sunday my son wanted to get home for church.  To add insult to injury or maybe just to pile on injury, we lost the daylight savings hour that weekend.

Mucho mocha java was needed to return to boring Troy. ::bugeye::

But the weekend in general was one of my favorites.  We sat in on Anthropology at Hahvahd in the midst of some very bored students.  We weren't bored as the professor seemed great.  We also did the tour at that school and it was fun, too.

It was great to be with my son, 14 at the time, for those three days and I look forward to a family weekend with my wife and daughter in Buffalo.

I'll happily admit that Doug's been playing great the last few weeks. No complaints, really...other than that there's more to the season than the last 4 weeks.

Although, if you're gonna pick four weeks to play well, this is the time to do it...:-D

The article about Sammy in the Sun answered my question.

[Q]If Paolini and sophomore Hobey finalist David LeNeveu both ended up with the hardware, it would be only the second time that the two awards were given to teammates. While LeNeveu has already won accolades as the Ivy League Player of the Year and ECAC Co-Player of the Year, Paolini has picked up recognition as well for his achievements.[/Q]
