Is there any chance they could access the embellishment for the alleged acting job as he was getting up or pretending he couldn't get to his feet without difficulty?

I just watched this all again.

The broadcast cuts to a commercial, showing the Union player in the box, and without any reference to Cornell even taking a penalty. When they come back from commercial, they talk about the penalty to Weidner. A little later he is shown in the penalty box, doing something to his right skate. It almost looked like he was tying it. I'm now wondering if before he went into the box, he was given a spare skate. (Do they bring more than one set of skates on the road for each player?)

In any case, he was definitely doing something involving the skate, while in the penalty box, before play had started again.

Quote from: dbilmesOne more leftover note from our win over Union, is that I don't recall the TV announcers saying anything about the fact that Union's starting senior goalie missed the game due to an injury, and the goalie who did play hadn't been in a game since November. That could have helped explain his struggles in the first period.

But not the fact that we outshot them 20-7 in the first period.

As near as I can tell we haven't beaten a higher ranked ECAC team than Union was last night (#4) in a league game since beating the #1 Elves in '96.

It took me a while to figure out that you meant "higher ranked ECAC team than Union was last night," not "higher ranked ECAC team than we were at the time." 'cause the latter happens pretty darn often.

That cuts both ways. I'd much rather we be ranked higher than all the other ECAC teams all the time.

By the way, this is another excellent opportunity for me to beg, again, that if anybody knows where I can find poll data prior to 1997 I'd essentially kill for it (and I know a guy...).

I assume that between 1966 and 1979 we spent most if not all of our time in the top 10, and it would be wonderful to see what our and our opponents' ranks were during that period.  Those legendary games against BU, Denver, etc were often battles between the #1 and #2, and if only for completeness I'd love to have that data.

Quote from: scoop85I finally got to see the embellishment call on Weidner; WTF was that call?  That about an all-time worst.

We certainly carried the play and the win was well-earned.  Really like the way Angello played -- certainly one of his better performance.

Boy can Vecchione shoot. I can certainly see him being an effective NHL player.

After the play, as Weidner was being helped off the ice, the announcers were suggesting that he may have had his skate broken on the play. Perhaps the way the broken skate caused him to look somewhat "wobbly" caused the ref to think he was embellishing.

That's the only thing I can think of, as little sense as that makes.

But he was almost immediately in the box. How could a skate be fixed that quickly? Loose Bauer pop off blade?

Is there any chance they could access the embellishment for the alleged acting job as he was getting up or pretending he couldn't get to his feet without difficulty?

Watching my DVR recording of the Union game it is easy to see the blade of Weidner's right skate move away from him as he fell against the boards.  The announcers showed the replay right after the commercial break following the penalties.

So are you suggesting that as I guessed, the skate being broken, causing Weidner to appear unstable, is what caused the ref to call the embellishment penalty?

Assuming that is what happened, once the penalty had been called, is there anything that would allow the ref to reverse the call if Weidner showed the ref the broken skate?

Yes, but not actually broken.  Bauer skates have a neat trigger mechanism that allows for quick blade replacement.  You can see that Jake as he is being helped of the ice has no blade connected to the white plastic under the skate.

I assume that if the refs realized their error that they could reverse themselves.  One of the announcers chuckled as they showed the replay.

I've heard that some pros have the blades changed with sharp replacements after every shift.  That seems unlikely but certainly Bauer has made a fortune with this patent.
