Cornell-Yale postgame

This was an amazing game for the Big Red against a team that had defeated us 8 straight times and outscored us 14-3 in 3 games last year! Isles answered his critics (for now at least) by singlehandedly keeping us in the game in the first half of the first period when we were being outshot 10-1 and the puck was in the Cornell zone nearly the entire game. Yale's goalie, meanwhile gave up goals on 2 of the first shots he faced.
We actually outplayed Yale for stretches of the game, and our young players looked excellent, especially Ferlin, Lowry and Ryan. We also kept Yale's No. 1 line from dominating play most of the time when they were on the ice. Of the two shot that beat Iles, one was a perfect blast that just caught the inside of the far post, and the second one was a long slapshot on a PP through a crowd in which it looked like Iles may have been screened. But there's no doubt which team had the better goalie tonight.
It was a smaller Cornell crowd than most years, but those of us who were there savored the moment!

Pretty solid performance. We could skate with Yale and for the most part CU's effort was far superior. The freshman were everywhere and figured into 5 of the 6 goals totalling 7 points on the nights scoring. It was nice to see Cornell survivie the first 10 minutes when they were all over us. The key to the game was the quick left pad save ILes made about 5 minutes in. The final 50 minutes we looked pretty solid.

Now on to Brown and see if the team can have back to back solid efforts

An amazing game. Reminds me of the powerful 5-2 win at New Hampshire a couple years back, also on national TV. (Reminds me in part because we didn't fare so well against UNH later in the year when it counted, IIRC, and I guess I'm already worred about the rematch in Ithaca, plus the playoffs.)

Freshman Brian Ferlin was a commanding presence even if another freshman, Joel Lowry, got second star (behind Andy Isles). Ferlin fought off a Yale defender and got a perfect pass to John Esposito for the first goal. He was +3 for the night. I liked his quickness with his hands and stick. His only mistake was being too quick to celebrate a goal that fluttered past the goal mouth and never went in -- that was clear from our section right behind the net that something like six of the eight goals scored -- but there was enough uncertainty to call for a brief instant replay check.

Isles was amazing in the first period when Yale outshot us something like two to one. A perfect game? No. He had one scary moment in the second when he wandered from the net to play the puck, spent a while thinking about it, and got it rid of it just before the blue uniforms arrived. I thought I heard "No, Andy!" come through the cracks in the glass from another playre, but it possibly may have been a nervous fan, too. The first goal that beat him was perfectly placed by Yale in the corner. (But amazingly Cornell's goals were pretty precise, too.) The second goal he allowed was at the other end and came on a shot from the point that I didn't see him react to, so I'm assuming he was screened.

Sean Collins showed amazing strength setting up the second goal. I thought the play was a washout and Yale was going to start a clear when Collins maintained control of the puck, reversed direction and skated from back right behind the goal to back left, one hand on the stick conrolling the puck, one hand warding off a Yale defender, and then he made a nice pass to Joel Lowry for the first of his two goals.

Perfect game for Cornell? No. Our breakout seemed unvarying and Yale broke it up more as the night went along. Yale showed a lot of speed that we couldn't match. We missed a couple chances at two or three more goals because some of the forwards wanted to tee up the puck before shooting; whenever I see an NHL game I'm impressed by how quickly they snap off shots. I hope Cornell works on that aspect.

And there were empty seats in the Cornell sections and no sign of a Big Red pep band or dismounted marching band. Last year tickets were nearly impossible to get outside Ingalls. this year there were lots of people trying to unload tickets right befor gametime. Anyone coming up from NYC got caught in huge traffic jams either on I-95 or the Merritt Parkway.

If Yale is #9, you have to like Mercyhurst for the Frozen Four. It seems as if Yale treated this like an NCAA tournament game: They came out flying but ultimately lost to a team you wouldn't expect them to.

Colorado College was ranked #1 in the WMEB and Troy Record polls for the week of 12/18/95, which passed for national polls back then.  This would be the week before the Denver Cup game, but I doubt any polls were released the week of Christmas.  And if there were, well, there were very few games played that week, and CC was still the lone undefeated team when the Denver Cup started, so I would expect they were still #1 at the time -- certainly in the top 10.

IIRC, there was some weather-related issue with travel when Cornell went to the Denver Cup that year.  I think their flight left several hours later than scheduled, possibly the next day, and that did not have a positive effect on the team.

I have these from about 1966 until he quit them. No, I don't feel like looking through all of them for the polls, but let me think about it.  Once the rest of the family gets up I'll pull them out. I've always wanted to get the first volumes; my compulsive nature would be happier.
