The Irish finish with three straight on the road:
Providence
Syracuse
North Carolina

Depending on what happens in the ACC tourney, UNC could be in a must win situation against the Irish in the finale. The SU game will be for the Big East title in all likelihood and could also be for the top overall seed. Not much separates the two at the moment.

That's a lot of travel for the Irish between now and a presumed NCAA quarterfinal at Hofstra or Gillette in 35 days. No other top team has more than one road game left (conference tournaments excepted where applicable) and no likely flights.

Princeton beat Dartmouth 8-4 Saturday (4/16) to go 2-2 in the Ivies now. Penn took 2 OTs to beat Harvard 7-6 after Harvard got 2 in the last 1:52 of regulation; had Harvard won it would have really hurt Princeton. Yale beat Brown 10-6. Some teams have played 4 league games now, others 5. The standings:

Cornell............4-0
Yale...............3-2
Penn...............3-2
Princeton..........2-2
Harvard............1-3
Brown..............1-3
Dartmouth..........1-3

Games remaining are

Dartmouth @ Penn
Harvard @ Princeton
Cornell @ Brown

Yale @ Harvard
Princeton @ Cornell
Brown @ Dartmouth

Imagine us playing Princeton back to back weeks at Schoellkopf. Woiuld be satisfying to win twice. But scary if we think Princeton is gathering steam.

If Harvard beats Princeton Saturday, the Tigers would come to Schoellkopf highly motivated.

Also, I saw some #21 jerseys (current style) in the Cornell Store a few days ago. I know the history behind it, so it seemed slightly distasteful at best to put jerseys with that number out for sale. Can anyone shed some light onto why they're doing this?
I don't know the particulars, but if it was my son, I'd be very happy to see people wearing his jersey. What better way to carry on his memory, and think about going to a game and seeing multiple #21 jerseys. Would you be sad, sure, but proud at the same time. Considering how involved with the program the family still seems to be, it makes some sense.
On top of this, I would imagine that some of the proceeds from the sale of the jerseys go to support the Boiardi Foundation.

Cornell up to #3 in both polls this week. Not far behind Hopkins in either, and two first place votes from the media.

It'll be interesting to see how the seeding committee deals with Notre Dame if they go undefeated - particularly in comparison to our 2007 undefeated regular season and #1 ranking where we still wound up as the #4 seed.

LaxPower, trying to emulate the NCAA process, has Notre Dame #2, behind Syracuse.

http://www.laxpower.com/update11/binmen/tsi01.php has ND seeded first, Cornell third. This is the TSI column (tournament seleiction index): "There is no strict formula used by the NCAA Selection committee to determine what teams are invited to the tournament. However, the committee does examine certain criteria and probably priortizes them by some weight factors. The Tournament Selection Index (TSI) attempts to guess at the factors that the committee uses and weighs them uniformly. The TSI factors are: Computer Ranking, Polls, RPI Ranking, Strength of Schedule Ranking, Quality Wins, Losses and performance in the teams final five games."

It was interesting in the polls to see Villanova-Bucknell-Penn grouped at 10-12, a good showing for PA schools. NYS has six in the top 20. Note also that Princeton merits not a single vote in either poll yet predicts to be seeded #12, helped by the #3 strength of schedule. Syracuse deserves credit for playing such a tough schedule (#1) while Cornell is #8, but perhaps not hurt as badly as by losing to the Cadets. Notre Dame at Syracuse April 30 will be a huge game.

I'm assuming there are 9 autobids, right?  If we put the conference leaders in those spots we have:

ACC - Duke
America East - Stony Brook
Big East - Notre Dame
Colonial - Delaware
ECAC - Denver
Ivy - Cornell
Metro Atlantic - Detroit
Northeast - Mt. St. Mary's
Patriot - Bucknell or Colgate

That leaves 7 at-large bids.  The following are locks for an at-large:

Syracuse
Hopkins
Virginia

Villanova, Penn, Carolina, and Maryland would be the last 4 in based on that ranking.  Princeton could very well be a bubble team, and will be playing for their tournament life when we meet them at Schoellkopf in two weeks.

Not quite. Only 6 Autobids for 2011:
American East Conference
Colonial Athletic Conference
Eastern College Athletic Association
Ivy Group
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
Patriot League

ACC is too small. Big East is too new (2012 they will have an autobid and tournament).

Princeton needs to get back to .500 to be eligible.

Season ending today based on laxpower NCAA criteria:
  1 Syracuse
  2 Notre Dame
  3 Duke
  4 Cornell
  4 Johns Hopkins
  4 Denver
  7 Virginia
  8 Villanova
  9 Hofstra
 10 Bucknell
 11 North Carolina
 12 Penn
 13 Maryland
 15 Delaware
 16 Stony Brook
 51 Detroit

Last out: Yale. Quick look has Cornell going through Maryland and JHU to get to the FF vs. SU. [EDIT: Maryland won't come to Ithaca because lax only seeds 8 and does matchups by geography. Forgot about that bit.]

Wouldn't it be 7 autobids then?  Doesn't the NE Conference get one?

billhoward

Princeton is 4-6 now with 2 RS games remaining plus the tournament. If they split their last 2 and get into the tournament 5-7 then they have to win both tournament games because you need a .500 record to be considered ... unless, one assumes, you're the AQ. They could perhaps win both RS games to get to 6-6 then lose the tournament title game, be 7-7, and have a shot at a playoff spot. But if Cornell doens't go as the AQ, it's going to knock out a bubble team.

I doublechecked Princeton's record via the Princeton-Dartmouth box score for the game Saturday at Gillette Stadium. Attendance just over 5,000.

Cornell's #1 spot in playoffs presumes no late-season letdown vs. Brown, which has happened.

Not 'til 2013.

As it stands now, by 2013, there will be 8 auto and 8 at larges. It gets mighty tight for at large spots after you include 2-4 ACC schools and Hopkins every year.
