I'm working on a new resource for Cornellians called Opzi, a collection of intelligent questions and answers from the Cornell community.  One cool thing we hope to do is capture knowledge (be it facts or stories) and present it in an easily searchable and browsable way.

Cornell hockey has such a great history, and it'd be great to create a place where someone new to the sport or community can quickly get a sense of what it's all about, ask newbie questions, etc.  I thought it'd be great to start building up a good archive of content for the incoming freshmen next fall, so if you have time this off-season, would be awesome to get some contribution of answers (and more questions you think people would find interesting).

ps - Opzi covers more than just Cornell hockey, so if you happen to have any questions for the Cornell network, feel free to post.

How did the Campbell Soup can labels get their colors?

Mr. Campbell was on campus and saw the banner with Cornell's name on it on cpus. Originally Campbell's colors had been orange and black (like another school we know well).

As I understand it, a Campbell executive was taken with the colors of Cornell's football uniforms (red top, white bottom) and convinced Campbell management to put those colors on the can.  This is from Wikipedia (so reader beware):

Campbell Soup cans' colors are red and white. Cornell's colors are red (carnelian, specifically) and white. The similar colors are no coincidence. In 1898, Herberton Williams, a Campbell's executive, convinced the company to adopt a red and white color scheme, because he was taken by the crisp colors of the Cornell University football team's uniforms. In 2004, at the urging of The Image Committee of the Student Assembly, Cornell University officially reverted to a version of this shade of red (PMS 187) after a four-year brush with the much brighter PMS 186.

I had not been aware of the 2004 color change, but I do like it.

I posted the question because I think it's a good candidate for Opzi.

The version of the story I posted is what my grandpa used to say at info sessions to prospective students.  He ('52) and my grandma ('53) did a lot of them and still have the slides they used from the 70s along with that little quip on the paper that went identified what was in each slide.

I like the concept of Opzi, especially in its abillity to connect disparate segments of Cornellians together. But to be fair, isn't this a service that eLynah already provides? Or do all of the anarcho-capitalist debates scare off the youngsters? ;-)
