The Molly Wee Pub is excellent for pregame.  It's rather small but they serve pretty quickly and the beer selection is very good.

Basic grub including several items of Irish fare.

Both Mustang Sally and Mustang Harry are decent if slightly overpriced for what they are, which is commercial sports pubs.  Sometimes I prefer just to get a slice, a burger, or a frank across the street - can't beat a few Nathan's dogs for the price of a single MSG dog.

What if maybe we'd prefer a place that wasn't sports/pub themed? < ducks >

Not sure if that's the case or not, but going with family, maybe a different genre would be better.

To second RichS, Molly Wee is pretty nice, especially for a pub.  However, it is rather small, so make sure to be early, particularly if you're with a decently-sized group.

South side of the street.  Seafood, Shepherd's pie, Steaks.  Reasonable prices, usually not too jammed up.
"Yo Paulie - I don't see no crowd gathering 'round you neither."

Could someone who has been there, perhaps before the Red Hot game, give me a quick review?

I've never been there but am considering going (with a fellow Golden Knight alum, of course!) before the Rangers' game on 12/30.

A comparison between Stout and The Molly Wee, which I'm very familar with, would be helpful.

Thanks!

180 from the Molly Wee.  Huge place, but gets crowded after work and before games.  If you have a party more than 2, and want to eat, I would definitely make a reservation.  Pretty good draught beer selection (approx 25, maybe a few more) with a lot of my favorites plus an impressive variety of bottled beers.  Food is good if not spectacular and I've mainly gone with one of their several different burger choices.

A plus for people on this board, they were showing the Maine-UNH game last night before the Ranger game.  Also they usually have Setanta Sports on for those who are into European soccer and rugby.

Thanks!  On a Sunday at 5 PM, it shouldn't be as crowded so maybe we'll try it.

Any place that shows college hockey is worthy of at least one visit.  :-D

Thanks. That's not a problem.  The NFL is but a mere pleasant diversion when I'm having a bite and a beer with a buddy before a Rangers' game.

And as he quickly pointed out after glancing at their beer menu, they have Stella Artois on tap.  Cool!

Not quite the phrase I'd use to describe Stella, but maybe that's just my Belgian side being snobbish :-}... That said, I would kill for a chance to have some Saranac out here on the west coast. ::drunk::

Well, I'd pay someone real money (really!) to ship me a Stone Double Bastard, because evidently they haven't made it to the east coast this year. ::cuss::

I think his point was that a bar with sports-loving customers may not be the best place for a pleasant diversion on a football Sunday (unless you are into the football).

Rich S

I think that anyone who is an avid hockey fan can certainly tolerate the "diversion"  of NFL football.

After all, it is a sports bar, at least in some respects.

STOUT was packed when my wife and I got there before the NYR game on Wednesday but I get another shot on Sunday with my Stella Artois-loving buddy.

"Cool" or not, he was thrilled to hear that Stella is poured at MSG as well.
