Wow.  Here's to one terrific career.  Thanks for doing Cornell proud, Joe.

When was the last time there was not at least one Cornell alum in the NHL?

I'm reasonably certain that it was the day before Brian Hayward arrived in Winnipeg in 1982-83.

Well I think Nieuwendyk probably feels some relief.  He's been battling that back injury for several years and likely been playing through considerable pain.  He had a great career - three cups, Calder, Smythe, 500+ goals.  I think he's a safe bet for the Hall of Fame.  It's too bad he had to finish his career in somewhat obscurity with Florida.

I've thought for a couple years that whenever Schafer leaves Cornell, Nieuwendyk could be the next coach.  As far as I know, he will be living in the area after he retires.

What I'd like to see is Schafer staying the coach with Joe a quasi-volunteer coach who from time to time stops in at practice to share his wisdom. That would seem like an attractive situation to recruits.

"Cornell goal scored by #25... Joe Nieuwendyk!"

"NIEUWENDYK!!"

Congrats on a wonderful career to Joe.

He and his wife need to start working on producing the Class of 2030.

If I'm not mistaken he already has kids.  Anyone know the skinny?

Thanks for the memories Joe.  Hoping you stay close to the game in some capacity, I'm sure he will.  Sustained excellence is a rare thing in the NHL.  I'm sure it's hard to walk away even with the injuries.

If you paid attention in hygeine class, you wouldn't have to ask.
