Support Schafer and our team

This is kind of a thread off the "Whither Mike Schafer" thread...

I think the best things people on this list can do to help keep Coach Schafer at Cornell are

(1) Write to AD Andy Noel and let him know how  much you'd appreciate what Mike Schafer has done for the hockey program and what that means to you as an alumnus.  Copy President Jeff Lehman if you feel like it.  (He does read email from alumni...I even got a personalized response from him once.)

(2)  Money talks...Make a donation to Cornell and direct it to the men's ice hockey team.  Alumni support is another way for the Athletics Department to sit up and take notice.  And this is where even small donations could add up to a significant amount.  (Just look at how much people gave to the Pep Band last week.)

In fact, when you think about it, is it too much to ask each of us to donate 0.5-1.0% of our gross salaries to Cornell hockey?  I think not...I typically give $50 for every Cornell goal against Harvard through out the whole season.  I think I will do more than that this year, since we got blanked back on Jan. 8.  (Jenny B....you lurker...This means you, too, even though you did not go to Cornell :-D )

guys I really dont think schafer is going anywhere. He's got a great program going...their about to renavate lynah...hes got a great family. I really dont think he would put his family through moving. I think Coach Schafer is ours for awhile.

How old are his kids?  When would they turn 18 and feasibly go off to college (or maybe juniors)?
Is next year here yet?

Mike

His kids are still young. He has 3 kids. 2 are around 10 and one is young (4 or 5 i think). I just really dont see him leaving cornell for along time if ever. Another though. This new defenceman we got coming in...for his name Smineof or something i think. How is he. Are we going to be able to fill the hole of cook and downs. Because are offence is going to be amazing i think. Hynes, Moulson, Bitz, Peg, Abbot's, Sawada, Carefoot, Topher, and some real good freshman coming in on Offence. But i just wonder about the D.

Andy

You know how the loss this weekend hurts because it's your team, this is where you went to school, and there are all sorts of memories, emotions, attachments etc. associated with the hockey team because of that?  I've got to think Schafer feels some of that too, he is an alum after all.  It would be hard to abandon that even if the team wasn't very good and the fan base was lowsy simply out of a sense of loyalty.  Considering the current situation, I don't seem him going anywhere soon.

Also, what sort of renovations are they planning on doing to Lynah?

We're proud of the hockey team but Travis Lee didn't exactly embarrass Cornell this winter. SI's profile of him was great publicity for Cornell ("brainy engineer"). And not that Cornell wrestling was chopped liver in the past, but you can see the impact the wrestling center had on wrestling.

I give you... a man without kids and a mortgage.   ;-)  (Only kidding -- I have no idea whether Tom has kids or a mortgage...)

As worthy charities go, Cornell hockey would be high on my list, and somewhere between The Gambia and Focus on the Family on my wife's list.  They probably aren't going to be getting a check from me anytime soon.  Money does talk, but in the end, this is a luxury hobby.  By all means, though, if you have the cash donate it contingent on them never tearing down Lynah.  The "Newman-Potter East End Bleachers" has a nice ring to it... :-D

No kids, and still no mortgage (yet...my wife is working hard on changing that).
So, my tax-deductible contributions to various charities make up a significant chunk of my tax reduction.  Certainly hope to keep it up even after we are attached to a mortgage.   ::help::

Okay - obviously not reading the forum as frequently as I should!!!  They'll get no end bleachers from me - I'm a blue-line seat man, myself.  :-P  And don't you mean West End?

Unfortunately, I just had an opportunity to visit my only relative who's even close to being in a position to do such a thing - in Minneapolis, and yes, he's a Gopher.   ::yark::

Of course, if I ever become CEO of Lockheed, Cornell will certainly have one fine arena...
