Filming for Love Story began in 1969. So, tying the jacket to 1960s seems most plausible.

Looking at the roster, it's hard to believe all 3 Ferguson brothers were only 5'8", and Harry Orr was a gigantic 5'9" (but only 150#), maybe that's why he was a defender. Their physical characteristics are certainly not like today's BIG red.
