This felt like a real gut-punch. The game seemed well in hand, if a bit tight. Cornell was definitely carrying play for the first 50 minutes. Even after the first Princeton goal, it seemed like OT, and probably a tie, was fairly well assured. Then, instant flashback to the undergrad years and that horrible empty feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Know what this felt like to me?  Has anyone ever played the EA Sports NHL video games?  You know when you're playing a season at a level too easy for your skill and you go on some ridiculous winning streak?  And then the AI engine basically picks some game where YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WIN and all of a sudden whatever team you're playing turns into the '84 Oilers and they score 4 goals in the last 20 seconds as you scream "WTF?" and there's nothing you can do to stop them?  That's what I felt like at the end buzzer.

We played well and controlled play, but oh, that last minute.  Shake it off, tip your hat to Princeton, and be thankful this didn't happen in the playoffs.  Learn from it and get ready for Dartmouth and Harvard.
Yeah, yeah...this is going to turn into another "in my day" rant, but

 *inhale*

IN MY DAY A & B were packed by 30 minutes prior to game time.  The pre-game warm-up heckle session was a sacred part of the night, and it was the time for individual fans to shine and show off their creativity and ranting skills.  In between band songs, there was a constant din letting the opponents have it.

And if the band were given an hour of basically down time...we'd empty the folder.  Play anything and everything we could find to give the good fans whose night were inconvenienced some entertainment.  Both bands sorta picked their butts for a while.

The only people shouting I could hear were the girls selling "$5 t-shirts!" out in the concourse.  I know this generation has decided that showing up 5 minutes after the game starts is the new status quo.  Whatever, that's your time.  But when you're already there with nothing to do, would you rather stand around the sidewalk outside, or sit around our venerable old rink and make something fun out of it?
And get off Rich's lawn!

This ends my personal four year winning streak. Of course, I only get to one or two games a year. One bright note for the trip: I sold my extra tickets to BCrespi from this forum (who I had never met), and he was good enough to phone and give me a heads-up about the delayed start for the game. The Faithful are good people. I'd bet the bar in the Statler did a month's worth of business in 90 minutes.
My pleasure.  Sorry your streak had to end this way, but at least the beer afterwards was still cold...

The "No effing way" game? Where they start ripping one timers in from beyond the blue line, pick off every pass, impossible to check, etc.

I'm not going to lie, I was looking for a reset button after the Princeton game.

I don't have a box score, but to me it felt like some sort of karmic payback for when the Big Red did something similar to Brown in November of '97.  Cornell was down 3-2 very late in the third period, but pulled their goaltender and tied the game, then got the game-winner about 20 seconds later.  That last goal came with about a minute left, and Brown spent that minute with their net empty, but didn't get the equalizer.

I also remember a game between Vermont and some western opponent (Minnesota?  Minnesota-Duluth?) a couple years earlier, in which the opponent was ahead 1-0 very late, but during a scramble in front of their net, a defenseman dove on the puck in the crease or something, and Vermont got themselves a penalty shot with ONE SECOND LEFT in regulation.  One of the elves converted it, and Vermont went on to win in OT.  Talk about a stomach punch.

As the box score shows, we were down 3-1 with five minutes left in that game.

The most memorable ECAC comeback I can recall happened the night Vermont cancelled their season: RPI was up 2-0 with a few minutes late at Union, and going on the power play.  Union scored short-handed, then pulled the goalie at tied it up in the last minute, and won in overtime.  (That was back when everyone had free radio on the internet, and I had switched over to WRPI after the Cornell game ended at about 3:30am Switzerland time.  Kurt Stutt summed it up: "I'm absolutely stunned.  I think I got hit by an
orange.")

On 2/22/99 there was a WHL game where Portland was out in Medicine Hat.  Portland's Todd Robinson won a game with a penalty shot late.  The next night in Lethbridge, he drew another penalty shot in overtime and won the game.  The home fans showered the ice with garbage.
OK, I'm tired of flipping through the game line to get to post-game, so I'll start this.

A few points:

1. At the end of the season this will be the game we look back on.
I have thought so too, but last night's turn of events really helps take the sting out of that loss.  Of course had we beaten Prineton maybe we do somehow win first place, or maybe it still hurts us in PWR, etc., but I'm just glad that dispiriting finish did not leave us in third, which IMHO would be a far tougher position than the 2-hole.

It's far nicer to see Princeton have some of the same problems we had. Maybe now the team can look back upon that game to push further, especially if we meet in Albany. But I'm glad that most people have probably forgotten what I said.:-}
