1/5: Cornell 4, Niagara 3 Postgame

Good, hard-fought game - I actually liked Cornell's play better tonight than last night, despite the much closer result.  They showed determination and character in finally putting it away.

Eight points for the Scott-Sawada-M. Kennedy line tonight and none for the "first" line.  Very encouraging to see that "new" line doing so well since the line shake-up.

Michael Kennedy played like an All-American this weekend.  I hope that's a sign of things to come, and not a one weekend wonder.

Our defense tonight didn't play so hot with the pressure on from NU's forechecking.  Doug Krantz gets knocked around quite a bit for a big guy.  Of course, Brendan Nash's play was notably off and it makes you wonder whether he is still dealing with lingering problems from his injury.  Great to see Krueger pick up the GWG to cap off a good weekend of play for him.

I had to leave just before the GWG, but was pleased to see we came out on top, as I think we had a pretty strong effort and were the better team tonight.  I didn't get to see the games down in Florida, but I think we are starting to gel nicely, especially our center-ice and offensive zone play.

I recall reading (or maybe it was from a RedCast interview) a quote from Schafer saying he put Berk in the lineup for the second game in Florida and sat Brendon Nash because he didn't think Nash, recovering from his injury, could handle the stress of playing two nights in a row.  This weekend, Nash was asked to play two nights in a row.

A Schafer quote from the IJ post-game article:

"I thought our defense was absolutely the strength of our hockey team (Friday) night and they were exactly the opposite tonight -- they were the weakness," Schafer said. "They wouldn't move the puck, turned it over, let guys get behind them, took lazy penalties."

It will be a while before Brendan is 100% recovered from his surgery.  He is probably getting stronger every day.  Fortunately, Cornell has enough defense men so that he can sit out when he needs to.

I don't think the team played all that well.  Well enough to win, obviously, which is what counts. The power play was still terrible, and the sloppy transition play and "average" amount of hustle won't get it done against ECAC opponents.  We benefited from playing against a very cold goaltender and extremely slow defensemen- Riley Nash was LITERALLY skating circles around them.  

I know the team is anxious to get back to league play and maybe this weekend was just what the doctor ordered.

Almost another third-period collapse. Niagara played better Saturday, but no way they should have been allowed to tie it up late in the 3rd. Shaky win at best.

Greening, M. Kennedy, and Krueger have impressed me with their play these last two weekends. Krueger has been effective on the breakout play, and I think the team's improvement in that area is partly due to him.

Two wins over a mediocre team gives us a 2-3-2 OOC record. Not exactly what I envisioned when this year's schedule was released.

Sawada could have had four goals this weekend if he didn't fumble the puck so much. He's going to need to capitalize on some of those wide open nets if this team is going to have a strong second half. We won't have another ten-goal weekend this season, so our guys have to take advantage of every easy opportunity.

I don't think this weekend's games mattered much. No chance of an at-large bid, and I don't see this as a team that can carry momentum from weekend to weekend. RPI will be much tougher than Niagara.

That said, it's nice to win. Looking forward to some strong performances as the conference schedule heats up.
