When Mrs. Stahl's 70-year-old Brighton Beach knishery bit the dust, LAURA SILVER was hot on the trail. Her knish hunt has since led to three continents, countless jokes, and some unexpected punchlines.

MICHELE FILON realized early that the CPA thing wasn't going to make her happy, so she opted for words, crafts, and poverty. She has written for, edited for, and/or designed for BabyGap, magazines including Good Housekeeping's Holiday Best and Family Circle's Home Crafts, and books like Wonderful Baby Quilts to Make and Hachette's Cool Crafts. She lives in Chelsea with her boyfriend, dog, cat, and more craft supplies than she can ever use.

MATT HABER has written for The New York Observer, The New York Times, Esquire, and other publications. In 2004, he profiled Sid Laverents (then age 95) for the Times.

JESSICA PIGZA is a rare books librarian at The New York Public Library. She is an avid seamstress and knitter, an enthusiast of books and other objects you can learn to make by hand, and a lover of vintage craft guides. She's on the web at Handmade Librarian and HandMade at NYPL.

CHARLES STAR (HOST) is a lawyer sans portfolio and a stand-up comedian sans recognition who lives in Brooklyn with his excellent wife, his awesome cat, and a budding baby genius.

Enquiring minds want to know: What is Adult Education? I intended to PM you but realized some others might be uncertain. Is this comedy, improv, self-improvement, lectures, or what? We'd consider coming to one if we knew a bit more. Do you sit in chairs and listen politely, or is there a bar and tables?

We call it a useless lecture series. Not stand-up, but most of the lectures are written with a sense of humor about them. They don't have to be, though. The show on War had two of the most depressing lectures of the series.

You sit in chairs, if you can get a seat, AND there is a bar. The last two shows have sold out, which means about 120 people; about 70 get to sit.

There is absolutely no self-improvement.

You can see some of the lectures at http://adulteducation.blip.tv/posts?view=archive&nsfw=dc. I really need to edit and post more of them.

Thanks for asking.

ADULT EDUCATION PRESENTS: "Cuisines of the World"
Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - 8 pm (doors at 7:30)
Union Hall in Park Slope
702 Union St. @ 5th Ave
$5 cover (buy tickets online here)

ROBERT REID, "Defining the Sandwich: A Survey in Truth"
Robert Reid considers this humble foodstuff—from its murky origins among celebratory, starved Trojans and its mocked namesake, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, to recent court cases debating what it means to be a sandwich.

CAITLIN MACRAE, "Andre and the Egg"
MacRae explores the impact of brunch on society at large, tackles the nuances of kitchen Spanish, and examines the fine art of crying in a walk-in fridge.

C.A.B. FREDERICKS, "Californian Cuisine"
Fredericks explains how the Donner Party ate (their way into our) hearts.

THE CONFINED NOMAD, "Eating the UN, A-Z, Without Leaving NYC"
Kara Van Malssen, James Power, and David Cianci share methods for finding cuisines from forgotten and unknown corners of the globe, all within the five boroughs (and maybe New Jersey).

With host CHARLES STAR

* * * BIOS * * *

New York-based, though Okie-raised, ROBERT REID is the US Travel Editor for Lonely Planet. He also blogs at reidontravel.com.

CAITLIN MACRAE has had many jobs and has lived in many places. She is currently a baker at Bubby's Pie Company. She lives in Greenpoint.

C.A.B. FREDERICKS is an editor, writer, occasional health professional, and disreputable gourmand. Born in San Francisco, he—like the city itself, in the words of the New York Times—"clings smugly to countercultural history." He smugly figures this includes eating people.

THE CONFINED NOMAD (confinednomad.com) crew have been eating their way through all the countries in the UN (and more!) since 2008. They are currently on Congo. Don't ask which one.

CHARLES STAR (HOST) is a lawyer sans portfolio and a stand-up comedian sans recognition who lives in Brooklyn with one each of wife, cat, and toddler.

It's been months since I've told you about a show but that's only because I don't think anyone has ever come because I posted the info here. (Beeeej doesn't count since he sees the show listings in a million places; he can't escape.)

No longer Brooklyn's Premier Useless Lecture Series, Adult Ed is now AMERICA'S Premier Useless Lecture Series. Starting in February, the show is coming above ground and crossing the river to make its Manhattan debut at Housing Works Bookstore. The show will be earlier and cheaper (free!) and we think it will be better than ever.

For the first show in a new venue, we are hearkening back to the theme of our first show back in 2008 with Miscellany, a collection of esoterica.

See you there. Details below.

ADULT EDUCATION PRESENTS: "Miscellany"
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 7 pm

Hosted by Charles Star

DREW DERNAVICH: Call and Response
Dernavich will explain the the origins of American gospel and blues music via Jerry Seinfeld, John Tesh and Star Trek, which is pretty much the wrong approach.

BRENDAN I. KOERNER: The Closest Thing We Have To Thor
How a balding, round-shouldered Ukrainian managed to throw a 16-pound contraption farther than any other human—and why his record will stand forever.

GARY DREVITCH: What I've Learned From the NY Times Corner Office
Drevitch attempts to discover what it really takes to be a CEO.

COREY PANDOLPH: Effective Cures for Cabin Fever
From alcohol abuse to swimming in the icy waters of the Atlantic, humans of cold weather climates have searched for a cure to the mindf&$k that is the mid-winter blues. Pandolph will show how the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is the apotheosis of this quest.

JILL STODDARD: How to Make Money From Occupy Wall Street
In 2008, the naturally-occurring variations in the world economy brought Jill's dream of shopping regularly at Whole Foods to a grinding halt.  But a fevered vision while buying street fruit inspired her to create a simple program that has brought in millions and millions of (Chechen) dollars. And she is ready to share it with you!
