Hmm...the CU sports information team needs to do a bit of proofreading. This is from the preview for the Lehigh game on Feb 25, 2023:

Last Meeting: Cornell won 9-5 on February 26, 2023 in Bethlehem, Pa.

If we win this year by the same score, then they just got the date wrong by a day, eh?

John Spencer Is Dead / Re: Cornell admissions
February 16, 2023, 12:45:56 PM
Quote from: CASAhh, the good old days that I remember.  Cornell posts admission stats dating back to 1980.  The total number of applications received this year are up over 300% compared to 1980 (71K vs 17K), while the total number of admits is actually down 10% this year vs 1980 (4,908 vs 5,456). How many of us older alums would be admitted if we applied today, with the admit rating falling to 6.9% from 32%.

I freely admit that my status as a dual legacy (both my father and uncle went to Cornell) had something to do with my being admitted. I wonder how much weight is given to ancestral legacy nowadays.

N.B. that neither my father nor my uncle stayed all four years at CU. My dad busted out partway through his junior year. My uncle transferred after one year because he missed his girlfriend. My uncle's been married to her for 65 years now. My dad never finished college, which was fine with me. I have told my children and those of numerous friends that the best place to go to college is where one of your parents flunked out. Dad encouraged me to do well, but he couldn't really hassle me about my grades. Which is good, because they were just enough to graduate and not a whole lot more.

Rescheduling the Friday game for Sunday afternoon is convenient for me. Living in the CET time zone, 6 hours ahead of EST, I can actually watch the game without staying up all night. As a bonus, it's a home game. I hope the guys play well.

I am sorry I wasn't able to get to the game this year. But now that I live in Spain, the trip was just a bit more inconvenient than when we lived in Philly. This year would have been particularly nice to see, since the Red are good and playing well. In past years, the RHH games have seen CU spit the bit.

I'll wear my Cornell Hockey hat on game days here in Sitges and give all the local English speakers from Czechia, Germany, and Scandinavia something to ask me about. The Brits don't care about hockey.

Thanks for the link, Pete.

Great to see you on here. I speak for a whole lotta Lynah folks when I say that you played exciting hockey. Thank you for that!

I went to the game and I saw a Big Red team that looked horrible. The first period was maybe the worst period of lacrosse by Cornell that I've witnessed in decades. They lost faceoffs, didn't win any ground balls, gave the ball away, and the score could easily have been much worse. They actually did start to play better in the 2nd period, but even so, they were just holding their own. Penn may be ranked in the top 20, but they were certainly beatable.

To my eyes, the goalie play was the only real highlight of the day for the Red. Without some excellent saves in net, the game would have been a rout.

I'm inclined to agree with those who suggested the team did not arrive prepared to play. As someone suggested upthread, perhaps a coaching change is appropriate. The team looked bad. Right now, Cornell is not an elite lacrosse program. Not even close.

I'll be there +2

We'll probably get there early enough to eat in town.

Brilliant.

I won't speak for anyone else, but ever since the ECAC/HE split, I've hoped there would be some way to ensure the BU rivalry would be kept alive. It's great that RHH has been received well enough that both universities want to continue it. I'm sure money has a part to play and that's fine. I just want to go to Cornell-BU games with my kids and grandkids. And at this point, it seems like we can safely say the series will continue indefinitely.

Princeton and Cornell can both clinch 9th place on their own if they sweep?

That seems, um, counterintuitive.

Hockey / ECAC does the Groupon thing for AC tix
February 28, 2013, 09:23:37 AM
This is the link:
http://www.groupon.com/deals/gl-britney-spears-at-boardwalk-hall-9?p=2

Yeah, I know what the URL says, but it takes you to a page where the ECAC tickets are on sale for half off. You will buy each day separately and you can pick between upper and lower level seats. In their parlance, "Session 1" means Friday's two games and "Session 2" means Saturday's two games.

If you know you are going to be in AC, this is a good deal. You'll have to purchase the Groupon by March 3.

After the Big Red got 7 points over the last two weekends, it's tempting to be an optimist.

Hockey / Re: Season Review

My reaction to the season is that the team has raised the bar on what success will be next year.

I expect the team to work on being more consistent. I do not expect to see very many outings like the flat effort against Harvard in AC.

Hockey / Bridgeport Hockey Fest?
March 20, 2012, 06:55:22 PM
If there is any serious talk of using the baseball stadium to do some sort of fan festival for our hypothetical Bridgeport ECAC tournament, then I would suggest looking at coordinating something with the University of Bridgeport. It's a short walk to campus and an even shorter shuttle bus ride.

If nothing else, I'd coordinate a pregame get-together for elynah folks somewhere on campus.

Hockey / Bridgeport as a venue
March 20, 2012, 09:47:22 AM
Re: Bridgeport

I'd love to tell you that Bridgeport has all sorts of wonderful things, but mostly it doesn't. The arena is 10 minutes walking distance to the University of Bridgeport campus and the end of mile-long Seaside Park. Not that the park is a big draw in March.

There's not a lot to do on a Saturday in Bridgeport, but you can find a good sports bar pretty easily and it's only about a half hour up to Yale if you want to see the sights. NYC is an easy, cheap train ride on Metro North, so that's a very reasonable way to kill your Saturday daylight hours waiting to watch CU in the championship game.

Hockey / Re: Happy Randy Wilson Day!
March 15, 2012, 09:34:51 PM
Oh that's right - that game was Randy's last game in college. He was able to go play professionally, pretty much immediately after the game in March of 1979. It's wonderful that Randy's association with the game is that it allowed him to have several months with his dad. I'm sure those memories trump anything that happened in Ithaca.

Thanks for stopping by, Marti. It's great to get the update on your son, too!
