Other Sports / Re: Cornell-Albany football
September 30, 2006, 08:52:14 PM
I checked Albany's record on their web site.  Kind of strange.  they were beaten by Fordham, who were beaten by Columbia 37-7.  So I'm not sure how good they really are.  One of their supposedly big wins was over Central Connecticut, and that's a team Yale would never consider putting on their schedule.
I was listening to the CCSU football show on the hartford espn radio this week. They just beat northern (?) georgia, which I understand is a big deal. They were talking about how the NEC (top to bottom) is starting to challenge the patriot and ivy league in the I-AA pecking order. They kept talking about how good Albany was though. The coach even talked about trying to schedule UConn in the next 8 years or so because the NEC starting offering scholarships this year for the first time.

In other news, anyone watching on some-access? I'm told I don't have access to the content but perhaps they haven't renewed me (even though they sent me a new password)... I'm listening to the (quite good) UAlbany announcers.

[Q]I wouldn't count on getting tickets from Cornell. After player comps, tickets for Cornell VIPs and a block for the band, there might not be any left. Keep an eye on the USCHO message board and see if you can pick some up for a reasonable price. You can always sell them again later if need be.[/Q]

If Cornell makes it, the band tickets will not come out of the Cornell allotment. The NCAA simply reserves 25 seats for each band for the games presuming all schools involved will have a band.
However, it's not to say that the powers that be in athletics won't likely find a use for most any FF tickets they are given.
The interns in the ticket office probably have priority over the students...

The CD Rich is referring to was recorded in February 2002. It is the one in copyright purgatory at the moment. Again, I'll post ordering info here as soon as it's done.

In other lax news, the ninth ranked women soundly defeated sixth ranked Notre Dame yesterday 13-5. The weather seemed to be bothering the Irish all game long and by the second half it was all Red. Cornell outscored ND 7-1 in the second, allowing a goal with 4 seconds to go.

The women have now won 13 in a row at home.

I know that the "remote control sieve" cheer has gone past the point of no return, but it still bugs me.
If it that hard to yell exactly what the goalie is doing as he does it? Say "skate" as he pushes off to skate. Everytime he pushes off say "skate". Don't just chant "skate" until you feel ready to launch into a chorus of "bend over bend over bend over."
When done right it can really get into a goalie's head (See Mike Morrison 11/00). When done the same way every time, it has far less impact.
But alas, gone are the days of, "skate...skate.........skate...tuuuuuurn...skate, skate, STOP, sweeeep, tap, tap..... tap, tap, drink....... tap.... bend over." Now it's more "skate, skate, skate, skate, bend over, bend over, do it!, bend over." It's boring and predictible, but I guess that's the way it is these days.

You can certainly walk from the train to the rink.

I believe the fan voting is worth all of 1/61st of the total vote. All the coaches vote, then they add in the fan vote as if it were just another coach voting.
It's pretty much a joke.

It's supposed to have been out a few times. Copyright issues have complicated things even more this time around than last.

As soon as I have them in my hand, it'll be posted here.

Hockey / Ivy Title & Cleary Cup
February 17, 2003, 02:45:56 PM
For what it's worth, Cornell could wrap up the Ivy title this weekend. Only Dartmoth and Brown can catch us at this point. Harvard plays Dartmouth in Hanover Friday. A Crimson win puts the Green out of Ivy contention. Should the Green then defeat Brown on Saturday, they would knock Brown out of it too giving us the outright title Saturday night.

However, a Harvard loss to Dartmouth on Friday night coupled with a Cornell win over RPI, and a Clarkson win or tie vs Yale, means Cornell controls its own destiny for the Cleary Cup and could wrap it up on home ice Saturday vs. Union. In that scenario any Ivy coronation would hinge on one point out of the princeton/yale trip.

So if my crazed over-analysis is accurate:
-Harvard d. Dartmouth and Dartmouth d. Brown--> Cornell wins the Ivy Title outright
-A Dartmouth sweep of H and B means we need one point from P/Y for a share, two for an outright Ivy title.
- Harvard loses to either DC or UVM and Yale fails to get 4 sweep in the North Country, four points for the Red clinches the Cleary Cup.
-SO, If HU beats DC, then UVM beats HU and Brown beats DC, AND Yale does not sweep up North, THEN Cornell takes both the Cleary Cup and outright Ivy title at home on Saturday with a sweep of RPI/Union....

Of course neither of these two accomplishments mean a heck of a lot in the grand scheme of things, but it's much easier than trying to do the math for how much our RPI will go down when we play RPI win, lose, or draw.

[Q]I have rarely seen him stop a breakaway.[/Q]

Lenny put on a SHOW at Red/White during the shootout. I think he stopped four of five but I don't remember exactly. Granted that's not game conditiones etc. etc. but it was still damn impressive.

Hockey / Re: poor grades?
February 11, 2003, 10:04:41 PM

Five seconds on Google produced:

Data

Data cataloguing grade distribution between 1965 and 2000 reveals that the number of A's awarded to Cornell students has more than doubled in percentage while the percentage of grades in the B, C, D and F ranges has consequently dropped.

In 1965, 17.5 percent of grades distributed to students were A's, while in 2000, A's constituted over 40 percent of the grades received by Cornell undergraduates. This dramatic data strongly suggests that the University is experiencing the phenomenon of grade inflation.

Hockey / Rock Paper Scissor?
February 11, 2003, 04:10:21 PM

I meant to post this story a while ago, but I wonder if anyone else caught the scene at the end of warmups on Saturday?

So, as you may have noticed, Pegararo seems to be "the guy" who is last off the ice at the end of warmups. He'll wait until the whole Cornell team and the opposing team is off the ice before stepping off. Well on Saturday, he cordially gestured to the Vermont player who was last off that he should get off first. The UVM player insisted Dan get off first. (I believe this ritual created matching minors for delay last season)
Neither played would leave. I remember once in the past when Krys Wieckowski onece psyched someone out by leaving the ice and then jumping back on quicly when no one was looking... but I digress.
So Pegararo took off one of his gloves and challenged the UVM player to rock paper scissor. I think it was best two of three. Dan went rock twice and lost. He shrugged his shoulders and went into the locker room leaving the UVM player to leave the ice last.

Am I the only one who thinks this is really funny?

Too bad Varteressian doesn't dress more often. I loved the weird looks I'd get yelling that....
