And I haven't been here in like a decade, and logged in solely to find Rich's email address for an unrelated issue, and lo and behold I see the same old names... so yeah.

I'm really really gonna try to go but my offspring has a birthday party 10-12 and ballet class 1-2. So I'll probably be late.

John Spencer Is Dead / Re: Bob Petrillose

In memory of Bob, here is the 2004 article from Gourmet on the Hot Truck.

http://blog.john-hayes.com/misc/hottruck.pdf

As further evidence of his legacy, in the last 2 days, I have discussed Hot Truck with Cornellians from the classes of '72, '75, '82, and '93, and grad '06 (including several full profs and a dean). Unsurprisingly, all these people have fond memories of Bob and the truck. I was particularly amused to learn that a WGC cost 45 cents in 1975. :)

And it irritates me that a bunch of kids who can't even bother to be in their seats by the start of the game are f***ing with it.
And I assume you also have a lawn they should be getting off of... maybe 100mg of thorazine would help.

Ouch.  I felt that from here.
To be clear, what I meant of course was:
I do not know why a team with such inspired fanbases cannot impose its will upon the University and Red Recruiting to build a team capable of national glory
Because such a naked effort to put winning above all would require such a betrayal of the principles of Ivy League athletics that the resultant championship would be hollow and meaningless?

Put another way, was President Day wrong in telegramming Dartmouth to concede the infamous 5th down game? After all, that little telegram cost them a 19 game win streak and a probable shot at the national title...

Sounds like an open admission of the already-existing unspoken reality.
Has there ever been anything documenting the sort of practices you allude to? I find it hard to believe that the word wouldn't get out if there was some sort of gross evasion of policies going on.

There's an excellent discussion of the various ramifications of these policy changes taking place here:

http://www.voy.com/152805/51374.html
I don't really know whether there's documentation, but I kind of thought there was an understanding that there's some wiggle-room within the scope of "need-based financial aid only" to tweak things in order to have a student body of diverse talents, backgrounds, etc., and that that wiggle room was occasionally used to benefit recruiting.  (I'm sure there's a wisecrack I've heard before about how "need-based financial aid" was allocated to reflect the fact that we need a left winger with a good shot, or something like that.  Yes, I know I'm not getting the line right.)
This doesn't match my understanding in so far as the FAFSA need formula was pretty much the end of the story in terms of determining need. That said, if FAFSA says you need $17k a year of aid, 17k of grant is a wholly different story than 5k work study + 2k grant + 10k of loans.

Now the fact that Cornell Tradition gives you $4k in grant money in lieu of loans, and varsity sports involvement counts towards the community service requirement may represent some of your historical wiggle. That said, I dunno how many hockey players have actually been Cornell Tradition fellows.

Right. I was going to make the same point. Ever look at an *international* ranking of elite colleges? Cornell frequently blows other Ivies out of the water. And at least some of that prestige comes from the Ag school and Vet school and the role they played in the green revolution.

Excellent point, John.

I can't recall if it was a full-blown presentation or just a one-on-one discussion with him in his office, but I once heard Dave Call, Ag dean back in the '80s talk at length about the contributions of the Ag school and its impact on the rest of the world, in particular in terms of the ability to feed it.  Very impressive.  He was, too, by the way.
Which is all well and good but it doesn't help us recruit hockey players.

Oh ew. Ick ick ick. Even if she's not a "child" but merely "underage," I hope this teaches him and his buddies a hard lesson about not being a total sleazeball. What a d.b.
Yeah, the hidden taping / youtube aspect takes this to a whole new level, even assuming she's "only underage" and not actually a child.
As for the apples and flowers comment, need I remind you that agricultural research is an explicit part of Cornell's educational mission as the land grant institution for the State of New York? Anybody familiar with Cornell's role in the green revolution in India can tell you that the apples and flowers are worth it -- maybe not for Cornell, per se, but for the human condition.
Right. I was going to make the same point. Ever look at an *international* ranking of elite colleges? Cornell frequently blows other Ivies out of the water. And at least some of that prestige comes from the Ag school and Vet school and the role they played in the green revolution.

Interestingly, when I was working at Yale, I got roped into being on camera for a BBC film crew. While setting up and shooing B-roll, the host was asking about what the Ivy league was, who was in it, etc. From our conversation, it was very clear that lowly Cornell was much more renowned internationally than pretty much every other Ivy but Harvard.

Cool.  So we can vote for Cornell this November, right?
No, but you can vote for the Cantab. No more @#$%ing Yalies. Twenty straight years is enough.

Okay, you're switching premises, but let's go with this one as long as we're at it.

Do you understand how endowments work?
I'll take nursing scholarships that Cornell can't touch for $100, Alex.

EDIT: oops. now I see that you already raised the nursing school issue in a later post. Nevermind.

Brown hockey player accused in child porn case
01:00 AM EST on Thursday, February 21, 2008
By Talia Buford

Journal Staff Writer

PROVIDENCE — A Brown University hockey player is facing several charges, including distributing child pornography, stemming from an incident in Canada in 2006, according to officials.

Harrison Zolnierczyk, of Toronto, Ontario, a freshman at Brown, is set to appear in Port Alberni Provincial Court in Canada on March 13.

"We're still in the preliminary stages," said Zolnierczyk's lawyer, Richard Fowler of Vancouver, Canada. "There is a discussion taking place, but I can't tell you anything about those discussions. I can say that the charges on their face are more serious than the circumstances."

Zolnierczyk and his former teammate, Bradley Harding, were charged with four counts on July 9, 2007 of surreptitiously making a recording in a situation where a reasonable expectation of privacy is expected, knowingly distributing that recording, possessing child pornography and distributing child pornography. Harding pleaded guilty to the charges and is awaiting sentencing, said Cpl. Rob Foster, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Foster would not confirm any details of the incident yesterday, but did say that Zolnierczyk was facing charges resulting from an incident in the fall of 2006. The Canadian news wire, Canwest News Service, reported that Zolnierczyk and Harding made a sex tape with a teenage girl and posted it on on the Web site YouTube.

The Canadian legal system does not characterize offenses in terms of misdemeanors and felonies, Foster said, though he did say the charges are all punishable by jail time.

At the time of the alleged offense, Zolnierczyk played hockey for Alberni Valley High School. He is a forward for the Bears' hockey team.

Phone calls to Molly deRamel, spokeswoman for Brown University, and Roger Grillo, coach of the hockey team, were not immediately returned yesterday. It is unclear whether Zolnierczyk is still playing on the team or if he faces suspension.

According to the university's Web site, Zolnierczyk has played in 16 games this season. Earlier this month, he was nominated as rookie of the week for his performance against Harvard. The Bears play next at Dartmouth on Friday.
