What's it like to get a "real job" at 35 after a career as a professional hockey player?

When Ben Scrivens retired from his career as an NHL goalie in 2016, he had to figure out how to get a "real job" for the first time in his life. Ben tells Trevor why he chose to get a master's degree in social work, helping other retired players deal with the jealousies, ego adjustments and hard truths that he struggled with after hanging up the skates for good.

He found that many former players struggled with teh same things he did without the structure and goals of a life in hockey. Ben says for years he couldn't even watch the game because of the resentment he had built up. After some skiing and a trip to Burning Man, Ben went on to look for what brings purpose to his life now.

Incidentally, I saw Brianne Jenner play in Ottawa last week. Fantastic atmosphere as Jenner scored in Ottawa's league goal scoring record 8-3 win over Minnesota. I hope the league can find sustained success.

I was at the game! She also had a goal and an assist and was the #2 star of the game!

Only goalie goal I've ever seen live and in person.

Greening is also mine. I have a gameworn Greening jersey that I wear at away games. I've run into his cousin at a few games.

Unexpected kid-complication is keeping us from going....

The enhanced licenses (EDL) are only good for non-air travel between the US, Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean Islands (so, useful for cruise ship travel to select locations).  The kids and I have been across the border into Canada a couple of times in the last two years (we live in Ithaca).  We've never had a delay or any issues with using them.  

I don't recall it being a ridiculous list of ID items required.  Perhaps social security card, birth certificate and proof of residence (in our three cases, bank statements to our home address was sufficient).  

Maybe CT is far enough from the border that your DMV workers aren't as familiar with their uses?

If you're driving across the border into Canada you can use an "enhanced driver's license" as ID instead of a passport.  Cheaper and somewhat easier to get than a passport (though, it does require a trip to the DMV....ugh).  It isn't much faster than getting a passport.  

In my case, getting one for myself and enhanced, non-driver state IDs for my minor-age children instead of getting passports saved me a few hundred dollars.  Plus, I didn't have to deal with getting their father to sign anything (which I would have had to do for a passport).  I guess the government isn't concerned that I'm going to kidnap the children and flee to Canada or Mexico.

I do think the ID requirements make Canada a poor choice for the ECAC tourney...but somebody on here might want to cross the border and, I dunno, enjoy the pleasures of Ste Catherine St.

Enhanced IDs are a useful alternative to a full passport, but they do not have the broad utility of a passport.

Jillson and Ross heavily quoted.  Given the wafts of odor over the glass during games, I can only imagine what it must be like the in concentrated confines of a locker room.

I went to the UNH-UAH game in Durham on Nov 26 and was both amused and gratified to see a variety of pro-UAH signs.  "Save UAH" and "We Still Love You" were among them.  

I realize the complications are considerable, but it would be nice if the program could be saved.  College hockey is a great sport, wherever it find a foothold.
