Re: Cornell lacrosse 2018 - Penn - 6 years ago
Nice, much needed win over a good Penn team. First half was pretty even, but the D was giving up lots of good looks and Knight was not stopping them. Then he appeared to injure his leg on a hard shot. He finished the half with 3 saves against 10 goals. Then it seemed like Penn never got the ball in the 3rd. They scored one goal and Bullen had one save, while the Cornell offense scored 6. Cornellby CU77 - Other Sports

Patrick McEwen, @LaxFilmRoom, has an advanced-stats ranking that has us at #6: At this point, I'm still very confused about how anyone can look at @CornellLacrosse & not think that's one of the 20 best teams in the country— Lacrosse Film Room (@LaxFilmRoom) March 19, 2018by CU77 - Other Sports

Re: Cornell lacrosse 2018 - 6 years ago
Cornell missed the injured players at SSDM. Their zone D got victimized a couple of times. Paul R and the wings did a good job of winning enough faceoffs to keep Cornell in the game. Tough to take a loss, but the Red is much improved over last year.by CU77 - Other Sports

billhowardHis wife, Lisa (?), has Penn State ties and like an endowed professorship here, PSU made a husband/wife package deal, IIRC. While Michelle Tambroni is a PSU alum, she has no official position there, either now or at the time Jeff took the job in 2010.by CU77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2018 - Yale postgame - 6 years ago
Paul R was 8 of 15 on FO, after Cornell went 0-4 in the 1st with Flynn and Dowiak (which was an odd strategy, IMO). Meanwhile, Yale's Conor MAckie was 15 of 15 on FO against Fairfield today. Going to be a tough battle next week.by CU77 - Other Sports
Re: Mathematical Models - 6 years ago
jtwcornell91it's not clear what the appropriate number of "fictitious games" is. You might guess two, one or even zero, but it's basically a measure of how much parity you expect. Right, but two fictitious games is the minimum. This corresponds to a flat prior on win probability for each team. Less than two, and the prior sags in the middle and rises at the ends. This predicts that winby CU77 - Hockey
Re: Mathematical Models - 6 years ago
KRACH win probabilities would be more accurate with an additional win and loss for each team against a fictitious "average" team. This is explained by Wes Colley in Section 3 of this white paper on his ranking method (which is similar to KRACH):by CU77 - Hockey

Re: Cornell lacrosse 2017 - NCAAs semifinals - 6 years ago
billhowardFor Cornell fans, can we root for either team? OK, Maryland has a Cornell coach, John Tillman '92. Starting in 1976 when Cornell beat the Terps 16-13 in OT (yes, you had to play a full OT period before sudden death), Maryland has been to the semis 20 times and the title game 9 times with no championships. Have to root for Maryland, a fellow alum is their coach! Yes it will mean Cornby CU77 - Other Sports

I suspect MK's contract was up (it's been 3 years since the interim tag was removed) and that he wanted another multiyear contract, but AN was only willing to go year by year. Sheer guesswork on my part, I have no actual info. I don't believe there's a mystery candidate in 2018. I think AN is just being wishy-washy. This move makes no sense at all. Who is going to take Milliman's old job for one year? What recruit is going to come under these circumstances? Just start a search for a permanent head coach NOW!!!by CU77 - Other Sports

The Ivy League is thinking of having the men's and women's lax tournaments at pre-determined sites starting next year, per an interview with Executive Director Robin Harris at halftime of today's men's final between Brown and Yale on ESPNU. Yale won, 10-9, and is the only Ivy to get an NCAA bid; the Elis will play at #2 seed Syracuse next Sunday.by CU77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2017 - 6 years ago
The Cornell-ND game is Friday, the winner plays #5 seed Princeton on Sunday. Princeton has upped their game recently; they beat Penn 17-8 in the Ivy semis (after losing to them 3 weeks earlier 17-12), and then had leads of 7-1 and 10-3 over Cornell in the Ivy final before winning 12-9. Re: Cornell lacrosse 2017 - Ivy tournament location - 7 years ago
Al DeFlorio Brown nipped Providence 13-12 in double OT tonight at Providence. Some strange stats: Brown wins the faceoff battle, 21-8; Providence outshoots Brown 57-37 Those are pretty strange. Beating Brown in Providence on Saturday is a tall order, but Cornell is very likely out of the ILT without that win ...by CU77 - Other Sports
