Re: Wrestling versus Binghamton - 12 years ago
Missed the match because of family obligations and that may have been the best thing for my health (and that of my computer). Hats off to Binghamton for their effort and the program's overall trajectory. It is facinating to watch Koll try to find the right line-up and find a way to get results from Villalonga and Peppleman that match their pedigree. Over on Wrestling Report, someone said tby mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 67 Princeton 59 - 12 years ago
phillysportsfan Yeah doesnt appear they will fix the foul line issues for the rest of the season which will prevent any lead from being safe. Although most of the free throw problem is Cancer and Princeton seemed to let Cancer get the inbounds at end because they knew he was a terrible free throw shooter. We have been saying it all year we wish they took less 3's and they finally did in that 2by mountainred - Other Sports
Men's Basketball 67 Princeton 59 - 12 years ago
A nice win for the hoops team deserved a shout out. I know correlation is not necessarily evidence of causation, but I can't help but think that the Big Red first rate second half (39-30) is at least slightly related to their taking just three three point shots in the half (missed them all). Cornell penetrated at will, though they paid for some of those drives as the Tigers blocked 9 shots.by mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Hoops team the midway point - 12 years ago
Thanks Philly, that helps on a Monday. One thing I noticed in the numbers that should be pointed out in fairness to this team. Ken Pomeroy's site goes back to 2004 with full sets of numbers. I don't know how well ratings translate from one year to the next, but I figure you can at least do relative comparisons. This team's overall rating and national rank would have them finishing second orby mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling beats Lehigh 24-12 - 12 years ago
Cam looked conservative, making sure he didn't tweak the hamstring. As he long as he keeps healing, it should be fine. Disappointing performances by Villalonga and Peppleman. Sure CV won, but they both looked way too defensive. I have no idea why Cornell struggles at finding a big time heavy.by mountainred - Other Sports
Wrestling beats Lehigh 24-12 - 12 years ago
Al -- Hope you don't mind my updating the subject. Peppleman drops a snoozer in OT (3-1) and Billy George then falls with seconds left in OT (2-0). Bosak though with a huge 2-1 win over #1 Hamlin. Very smart wrestling by Steve and Hamlin looked exhausted at the end. Cam got a major even though he was clearly not 100%. Lehigh's #1 ranked heavy ends the dual with a pin. Nice to finallby mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling hosts Lehigh, Sunday, 1pm - 12 years ago
Halftime -- Cornell leads 17-0 Coach Koll with a gutsy call on the line-up, staring Frank Perrelli at 133 instead of his usual 125. It works as Bricker Dixon gets an easy win at 125 and Franks holds off the heavier wresterler for a 7-6 win. Nevinger upsets Steve Dutton at 141, Chris Villalong gets a late take down to win at 149 and Kyle Dake destroys his opponent for a 16-0 tech fall secondsby mountainred - Other Sports

Re: Hoops team the midway point - 12 years ago
Ben Al DeFlorio Excellent analysis, mountainred. I agree with giving more playing time to the guys who will be around two or three more years. Sure worked for Jeff Mathews. That reminds me, does anyone know what's become of Jake Matthews? He's still listed on the roster, but hasn't played at all this season. Thanks Al. The Jeff Mathews analogy is spot on. Ahh Jake Matthews. Maybe no playby mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Hoops team the midway point - 12 years ago
phillysportsfan yeah I dont understand why Courtney allows them to take these stupid 3's. He always says Ferry has a green light but you cant take those transition 3's on an off night against superior talent on the road which was the Maryland game. It gives the other team the ball right back and kills the momentum of a good defensive effort the previous possession As you and I have chatted aboby mountainred - Other Sports
Hoops team the midway point - 12 years ago
With just a D3 game to go before the Ivy season starts (and with the last basketball thread containing too much Harvard talk) I thought I would check back with Ken Pomeroy to see what his site says about the squad. KenPom now says Cornell is the 186th best basketball team in the nation and sixth best in the Ivies. Cornell is now a slightly above average defensive team. scoop85 phillysportsfan Amazing how this team doesnt quit, they really could have packed it in after 15-0 and when the lead got to 23. Now if they could only win a tight road game. You would think they could win one of these by dumb luck with as many close road games as they have had. All those chucked 3's at the beginning really killed them, would be nice for this team lose their identity asby mountainred - Other Sports

phillysportsfan ugarte Hey Harvard, welcome to the 13 seed. yeah this should put an end to all the ESPN Harvard hype Don't trust ESPN to be logical, but Harvard's resume is based almost exclusively on the Florida State win that is not holding up real well.by mountainred - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 59 Stony Brook 68 - 12 years ago
The amazing thing is that SB built their 20 point lead without a huge rebounding margin. I think they had more offensive rebound than Cornell at halftime. Which tells you all you need to know about how poorly the team played in that first half.by mountainred - Other Sports

If it were just the Rhodes Scholar issue, he may have been able to finesse it because what exactly is a "Rhodes Scholar candidate?" You could probably claim that being told by your school to apply -- if that was actually true -- is enough to be a candidate. Sloppy and embarassing, but maybe not fatal. Re: Men's Basketball 67 Penn State 74 - 12 years ago
While the Big Ten Network announcers were woefully underprepared on Cornell (just the usual tidbits about Gray being a manager and Eitan being able to solve a Rubik's Cube quickly), they were gushing about Miller and seemed genuinely surprised he was in the Ivy League. I kind of enjoyed that. Lamore's play showed me that he deserves more time, he looks like a natural post player. But I agree wby mountainred - Other Sports

Re: Men's Basketball vs. Albany - 12 years ago
phillysportsfan mountainred I don't think that's good news from Illinois. Cornell's best chance for the upset was that the game was three days before a rivalry game with Missouri. Webber will most likely have his guys' attention now that they are coming off their first loss. We will pay for any bad stretches like the bad ones versus Albany. On the bright side, that was the Big Red's 3rd winby mountainred - Other Sports

Ken Pomeroy on the Hoops team - 12 years ago
Ken's website is now a pay site, so no links and only a few specifics out of fairness to him. Overall, he would label Cornell as decidedly average. The Big Red is the #175 team in the nation (out of 345) and projects to basically a five hundred season. Some of his numbers aren't surprising: The Big Red is a lousy offensive rebounding team (bottom 10 percent), relies too heavily on the threeby mountainred - Other Sports

Josh '99 billhoward Ken711 For his part, Austin insisted that money had nothing to do with his decision, dispelling reports he was seeking a lucrative deal with a CFL team. “Contrary to reports in the media, money was not a factor at all in this decision,” Austin said. “In fact, I have turned down several offers since my arrival at Cornell that would have paid substantially more than I am makingby mountainred - Other Sports

What I heard was "He doesn't want to play." Now, that could certainly be Barry being sarcastic/frustrated after a demoralizing loss and the truth is more along the lines of "Peck doens't want to push himself to come back this season and risk hurting himself further while losing a season of eligibility."
