Re: Interview With Coach Schafer Now Available! - 19 years ago
"the stands were relatively empty in the East." Just a minor quibble with the Coach on this. Amherst attendance was definitely low, with 3,600 the first day and 3,400 the second day, but Worcester had 8,300 the first day and 8,600 the second day. Either would've certainly benefitted having Cornell in the field, but I wouldn't say that Worcester was "relatively empty." JMHO.by Mark - Hockey

Re: Borque Leaves BU - 19 years ago
Six months before next season starts and BU is being dismissed already. Now that's respect. Bourque will be missed, but to me, he just wasn't the same player once he injured his knee in the WJC in December. Come on Ewing Theory. While neither will fall off the cliff, BC and UNH will both have to deal with some significant graduation losses, and *neither* will be running away from thby Mark - Hockey
Re: Nov 11, 2005 - 19 years ago
Sorry, but there's no indication that Cornell and BU will play during the 2005-06 regular season. We'll have to wait for Worcester or Milwaukee for that to happen. From what I hear, BU will play three ECAC teams next season -- RPI, Harvard and Dartmouth. Adding the three UVM games to the HE schedule shrinks the non-conference offerings, especially when you add in the two Beanpot games in Febrby Mark - Hockey
Cornell Grappler in SI - 19 years ago
From this week's issue: By Brian Cazeneuve Hours after winning his second NCAA wrestling title in three years, Cornell senior Travis Lee sat in a St. Louis restaurant last Saturday recalling the 2004 defeat that helped propel him to this point. "I didn't analyze what I was doing," he said of his 6-3 loss to eventual national champion Zach Roberson of Iowa State in last year's quaby Mark - Hockey

Posted by CowbellGuy on February 23, 2005 05:04PM (Moderator) Thanks, though they spelled Schafer "Schafter" twice and think Bitz had a broken ankle earlier this year. He must've mixed up your coach with the former Vermont goalie. But getting Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. right on the first try was impressive.by Mark - Hockey

If BU makes the NCAA field, they'll definitely be playing in Worcester, since they're hosting the event.by Mark - Hockey

What you guys don't realize is that Travis Lee pinned Freddy Meyer. How about a BC-Colgate undercard and a BU-Cornell championship bout on 3/25 in Worcester? Signed, A fan of the team that didn't really deserve another Pawt last night.by Mark - Hockey

ESPN Classic - 19 years ago
Even though a certain member of your fandom (how was the ride up to Beantown with Rogie, John?) wears rather unflattering shirts--touting a cheer that reverberates through Lynah--to local saloons near BU , I'll add this programming note anyway (which I think Arthur, Jim, Al, Greg and others would appreciate): If you get "ESPN Classic" by means of cable or satellite, on Saturday mornby Mark - Hockey

A little more info: 6’1â€, 195 lb. Matt Connors, a fast, high-scoring wing with Nichols School and the Buffalo Saints midget major team, has committed to Cornell for the fall of ’05. Connors, a right shot from Buffalo Grove, NY, is a big get for Cornell. He’s an exciting player who creates numerous chances with his speed, often breaking free for a breakaway. Re: Ivy League booze? - 20 years ago
I don't remember Peaches, but wasn't there a bar called "Plums" on the Commons? Bingo, Big Red Apple, it was "Plums." I knew it was some sort of fruit, but my memory escaped me on the actual name. Considering I was there when Mike Schafer was "playing" for the Big Red, there's probably a reason I forgot. I bet Mike had a pop or two in Plums in his day. From what I rby Mark - Hockey

Just for comparison purposes, here's the other Ivy cocktails that pertain to hockey playing schools: Harvard (Brandy, Sweet Vermouth, Angostura Bitters, Sugar Syrup) Princeton (Dry Gin, Port, Orange Bitters) Yale (Dry Gin, Dry Vermouth, Orange Bitters, Sugar Syrup, Maraschino) And the book also included other such popular favorites as Sweet Patootie, Kup's Indispensible, Golden Screw, Castleby Mark - Hockey
Ivy League booze? - 20 years ago
Going through an old box of books in the basement the other day, I came upon a paperback "Bartender's Guide" from 1971 (the original publication date was 1948). After a quick look at the index I was surprised to find something called a "Cornell cocktail" (Harvard, Yale and Princeton had their own concoctions as well) listed among the book's contents. I happen to think that USCHO and INCH both do a good job of covering college hockey -- two sources with different strengths are better than one. The INCH "newsstand" feature has a tremendous amount of info every week that might otherwise be overlooked. I'm happy to have both sites to peruse -- sure beats receiving dated newsletters/papers like back in the old days.by Mark - Hockey
Re: A New Lynah - 20 years ago
Hey "Mighty" Quinn: You guys won the recruiting battle for Murray, and BU won the battle for Schaeffer, so as Joe Morgan, the old manager of the Red Sox used to say, "It's 6, 2 and even." What that means is beyond my comprehension. Having Lenny in a BU jersey wouldn't have been so bad, either. And after all the good things that Coach Parker said about your team following lasby Mark - Hockey

Re: A New Lynah - 20 years ago
Al: You could be right about your goalie hunch, but as I slip on my deerslayer cap and Inverness coat, I seem to remember that BU and Cornell both had an interest in Murray when he was playing for Apple Core on Long Island, in much the same way that both schools were interested in current Terrier defenseman Kevin Schaeffer when he played on the same junior team. Obviously, Schaeffer doesn't mindby Mark - Hockey
Re: screw BU! - 20 years ago
Hey, the truth hurts. I couldn't agree more. EVERY ONE of Cornell's fans are phony facetimers who wouldn't know a hockey puck from a Ring Ding. You're all useless Ancient 8ers!!! How's that? I read those comments and didn't know what the heck he was talking about. I chalk it up to teenage goofyness and speaking before you think. Got this e-mail from another BU fan about two former Terriers appearing on the big screen: "Mike Hyndman ('70) won the role of Cornell's Francois LaFleur, who punched out Harvard's Ryan O'Neal in "Love Story." If you recall, Mike told us that O'Neal couldn't skate a lick and he had to hold the actor up by the back of his pants, while whaling away with the other hand. The second aby Mark - Hockey

And speaking of that Montreal-Boston series in 1971, here's one last item on the Cornell grad: "Midway through the third period of last Sunday's showdown between Montreal and Boston, the old seigneurs and brash young lords of hockey, Ken Dryden stretched all 42 inches of his left arm across the mouth of the Canadien net and speared a couldn't-miss shot by Phil Esposito, Public Enemy No. 1 tby Mark - Hockey
