ESPN Classic

Even though a certain member of your fandom (how was the ride up to Beantown with Rogie, John?) wears rather unflattering shirts--touting a cheer that reverberates through Lynah--to local saloons near BU , I'll add this programming note anyway (which I think Arthur, Jim, Al, Greg and others would appreciate):

If you get "ESPN Classic" by means of cable or satellite, on Saturday morning (1/15) they will be showing a segment of the show Woodie's World...."Woodie's World is an irreverent look at the world of sports by one of the true wordsmiths of network television, Heywood Hale Broun. As a sports correspondent from the CBS News culture of Walter Cronkite and Charles Kuralt, Woodie Broun reported the big stories and the not-so-little ones."

The show runs for 30 minutes and will be shown from 8:30-9:00 am.

This segment was shot in 1967 and is entitled "Boston Hockey." Part of the show, of course, is devoted to No. 4 and the Bruins, but there's also a piece on college hockey, with highlights of a game between the Big Red and Terriers at the Boston Arena. I haven't seen it yet myself, but have heard that it includes footage of a Cornell goal and another shot of that pretty good goalie of yours from Ontario.

Depending on which Cornell goal they show, Greg, maybe we can determine definitively which Ferguson scored the second goal in that game. With Mike Doran getting an assist, one would guess it's either Doug or Dave.

Mark, you really are a good guy to drop these little gems on us on such a regular basis. If Cornell and BU ever hook up again we really do need to meet at, before, or after a game for some good old reminiscing.

I didn't read your note, Mark, until 9:30. Damn it!!! If anyone does get the CU-BU clips into digital form, I would also like to get my hands on it. Despite my disappointment, I'll offer my thanks to you, Mark, as well. Bill

Looked like the 1/23/68 game at the Boston Arena.

In the sequence in the Cornell end, you can see #14 Lodboa at left wing (he moved to defense the following year). Pretty grievous turnover in our end, but I can't make out the perp's number. Bob McGuinn was the forward in the corner with his helmet pushed back to "show his hairline." Bill Lewis was the wing raising his stick after the Cornell goal. Greg's box score credits one goal to Lodboa with an assist to Lewis, so perhaps that's the goal shown. I haven't yet made out the scorer's number. In the first sequence, #4 is Gordon Lowe. #22 Ian Orr puts his arm over Ned's shoulder during the post-game handshake.

The BU player talking about the need to wear a helmet was Herb Wakabayashi, an all-time great, IMHO, about the size of Topher Scott.

If those were the BU cheerleaders in 1968 I want to go back in time.

The segment featuring Cornell-BU footage was primarily about the introduction of helmets into the NHL (an entire Black Hawks line began wearing them). Broun visited a company in a Boston loft (looked like my old Boston tailor's loft) that made helmets and then interviewed BU coach Jack Kelley about them. I'm guessing the footage came from BU, but perhaps from the Boston affiliate of whatever network Broun worked for at the time.
