Re: Think there is time to change his mind... - 21 years ago
Greg: Ouch. You ECAC snob. BTW...There's a kid, Brian Boyle, who was on a recruiting visit to BU last week. He's also supposed to be interested in Cornell, and now I know why -- 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds. I can certainly see him handing out some bruises at Lynah. We'll have to see how it turns out. Of course the kid I was really interested in, Chad Kolarik (kid brother of Harvard's Ty), signedby Mark - Hockey

Re: ECAC Broadcasts on New England Sports Network - 21 years ago
My bad, I edited that MAAC game out since it wasn't an ECAC game, but did leave the other one in. In any event, the ECAC games, as far as I know, will start in January, and not sooner.by Mark - Hockey

Yeah, that was one rousing effort by the Terriers last night. I'm sure the Red and White game was far more entertaining.by Mark - Hockey
Re: Another rough night for the ECAC.... - 21 years ago
Well, BU didn't want you ECAC folks to have a completely lost Friday night, so it decided to shoot the majority of pucks into the legs, arms and body of the UVM goalie. While I don't think the Cats are ready to contend for the ECAC title, I think the two ties with Northeastern and BU are more indicative of their potential than the 10-goal loss to UNH. And having a senior goalie stone the homby Mark - Hockey

Re: #7 in Hockey According to SI - 21 years ago
Greg: Here's THN preseason college Top 10. BU's way too high for my liking...perhaps you feel the same about the Big Red? And BC at No. 4? Good offense for the Eagles, but come on. 1) Denver 2) BU 3) Cornell 4) BC 5) Michigan 6) St. Cloud 7) Harvard 8) UNH 9) Maine 10) CC And no Minnesota or Michigan State. Hmmmm.by Mark - Hockey
Re: #7 in Hockey According to SI - 21 years ago
Woops....Just noticed that on a page of player profiles (current and former college players drafted by NHL teams), The Hockey News has a Colgate logo next to Doug Murray's picture. There's not a transfer to Hamilton in the works, is there?by Mark - Hockey
Re: #7 in Hockey According to SI - 21 years ago
While SI running a 3-page college hockey preview for the second year in a row almost caused me to fall off the dining room chair I was seated in, The Hockey News also did its annual NCAA hockey preview in the current issue, and boy, are those preseason rankings ambitious. 1) Denver; 2) BU; 3) Cornell The publication also had Cornell winning the ECAC championship and said in the season outlook &by Mark - Hockey
Re: I love the ECAC... - 21 years ago
Oh goodness, having to endure back-to-back championships from BC in hockey would be just about more than my sanity could bear. Kind of like the joy that would be felt in Ithaca if Harvard ever won two NCAA hockey titles in a row, eh?by Mark - Hockey
Top college sports programs according to SI - 21 years ago
This week's cover story in Sports Illustrated is devoted to the 200 best Division I athletic programs. Cornell clocks in at No. 74, two ahead of BU at 76. The John Harvards, owners of the biggest college athletic program in the country, are the top-ranked Ivy school at 41 (or 44 if my memory is bad). Here's the link: P.S. Lest I forget, good luck to the Big Red in the upcoming 2002-03 seasonby Mark - Hockey

Sorry for the spelling mistake. I just thought an ECAC comment by a prominent hockey scribe in what is normally an NHL notes column might be interesting to some folks. Guess not.by Mark - Hockey
From Placid to Albany - 21 years ago
I have a feeling Messers. Whalen and Berge may have ghost-written this sentence for a small fee, but this was the closing thought in the weekly Hockey column in the Boston Globe today: "Sorry to hear the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference will be pulling its annual hockey playoffs out of Lake Placid and taking its fine show to Albany. Taking a tournament out of Lake Placid is like puby Mark - Hockey
Re: 1967 NCAA Championship - 21 years ago
Arthur: Thanks so much for taking the time to post the boxscores from those two BU-Cornell playoff games. Looks like BU had some opportunities, but, as per usual, Mr. Dryden was there to shut the door. Do any Ithaca Journal accounts of either of these games exist? Thanks again for your efforts.by Mark - Hockey

Arthur: I don't know if it's possible, but would you be able to post the game accounts of the '67 ECAC championship game between Cornell and BU at Boston Garden, or the NCAA championship game the following week in Syracuse? Thank you.by Mark - Hockey
Re: We were hockey players once, and young - 21 years ago
Arthur: Thanks for supplying the game recap, and as usual from back in the good ol' days, the stats never seem to match. Al: I was watching a Hockey Hall of Fame video that featured a 6-7 minute segment on Ken Dryden, and for some reason, I thought they had a black & white picture on the screen that featured a Cornell jersey he was wearing with three stripes? Must've been an illusion. Latby Mark - Hockey
We were hockey players once, and young - 21 years ago
The subject of holiday tournaments reared its head on the USCHO board, and there were a few posts about the infamous BU-Cornell matchup at the Boston Arena back in December of 1966. Al or Jim, were you at that game? It was supposed to be one of the better and more entertaining games of the Harkness-Kelley era and ended in a 3-3 tie in double-overtime. BU historian Sean Pickett wrote the followby Mark - Hockey

John: I don't want to kill you off decades before the grim reaper is scheduled to pay you a visit, so maybe I'll have BU win the game and you'll just be sent to the hospital with a case of exhaustion? Al: Sean Fields will be the primary BU goalie next year. He's usually pretty solid, and has two years of playing under his belt, so I expect he'll have a good junior season. Cornell and the '67 Leafs - 22 years ago
Since BU has been accused of the same style, this caught my eye when reading some old Stanley Cup material at cnnsi.com. Sounds like Schafer's Boys to me: "the Toronto wins were typical masterpieces of rugged checking, defense and superb goaltending ... Cynics around the NHL have often said that this cautious philosophy produces boring hockey. Punch Imlach, who is never boring himself, laby Mark - Hockey
Re: Paging Mark the BU Fan - 22 years ago
That's me, John. Ditto on the resumption of the BU-Cornell series...let's hope it lasts beyond 2002-03. Here's hoping the Terriers bring their "A" game to Lynah next season. Hey, I'll take a split, even with some of the Faithful absent due to Thanksgiving break. I'm a little more cautiously optimistic than Brian above. More years following BU and more disappointments, I guess. I'mby Mark - Hockey

Dryden at No. 10 - 22 years ago
Sports Illustrated, in the new issue, compiled a list of the most impressive college sports feats by individual athletes. Ken Dryden rounded out the list at No. 10: 1) Jesse Owen in '35 setting four world records at the Big Ten meet 2) Cael Sanderson's 159-0 wrestling record, with the Iowa State senior finishing his career last week 3) Barry Sanders of Okie State rushing for 2,628 yards and 39by Mark - Hockey
