adamw upprdeck well sometime in the next 2-10 yrs we will have to find out what a diff coach can.. I doubt he will be here when he is 70 so the window is probably even smaller. I'm going to go out on a really short limb and say that the odds of finding another coach that does as good a job, are about 5%. Umm, considering it’s probably going to be Syer, it will be much higher than 5%.by BearLover - Hockey

Scersk '97 BearLover Just to be clear, I’m not suggesting that if you changed a bunch of variables (such as conference), RPI would literally be the exact same in a small sample. I’m making simplistic assumptions to demonstrate my point. But if you want me to edit my point to cover sample size, then I revise my point as follows (which has no effect on my ultimate conclusion): If Cornell plays oneby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
chimpfood Just because RPI accounts for SOS doesn’t mean that it does it accurately. Right now I think that winning percentage should hold more weight in the formula but I’m sure if cornell was having a 13-10 season in hockey east I would think otherwise. Yeah, whether the RPI is an accurate measurement is a different topic. Obviously, nobody really knows. We can see how teams from weak conferencby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
Scersk '97 BearLover Remember, if Cornell were to play in HE, or the ECAC were to be better, then Cornell’s SOS would improve, but it’s win% would go down. Its RPI, which, again, judges the “true” strength of Cornell, would be UNCHANGED. Therefore, being in a stronger conference would not benefit Cornell (or any team). Basically, you're forgetting about the effects of small sample spaces. We caby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
Scersk '97 TrotskyAs in society, a rising tide raises all boats. As in society, gross inequality damages even those on top. We need a stronger ECAC to support a stronger Cornell. We have nothing to lose but our chains. As you've said in other places, these things are cyclical. There has been, at least for the ECAC, quite a bit of coaching turnover lately, if you count lately as "in theby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
Trotsky Unless I am grossly misunderstanding your argument or RPI, you have it exactly backwards. RPI's adjustment for SoS is what brings it into consideration. Far from diminishing it, it quantifies it. That is indeed the whole point of RPI: to compare members of different sets which do not have direct common games. Without something like RPI we would go by winning percentage and then you wby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
upprdeck It doesn't help to have almost the whole ECAC be pretty poor. Better play brings them up and that helps Cornell and brings down all the teams OC that they lost to. Its hard to have a 4-5-6 loss season no matter what teams you play. RPI is meant to adjust for this, so I still don’t really buy these arguments. But yes, I think that, in the case where there are only one or two good teamby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others 2023-24 - 3 months ago
There have been almost no upsets the last few weekends. We need WMU/SCSU/Prov/UMass/Mich to lose to a bad team, but that hasn’t been happening. It would also probably be good if, when these teams happen to play each other (eg. SCSU plays WMU for two games in a couple weeks), one team sweeps rather than the teams splitting.by BearLover - Hockey

Trotsky BearLoverBy the way, does anyone know why Fegaras was scratched? Did he finish last night’s game or did he get hurt?In the Union pre-game on WHCU with Jason, Schafer said Fegaras was dinged up just at the end of the RPI game, and didn't appreciate it was more than a stinger until he was back in the locker room. He should be okay for practice as early as Tuesday, but could not go against Uby BearLover - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 upprdeck Mich loses so up to 13. Win next week and Hope BU takes card of Prov and BC does the same to Umass Actually, we were up to 13 before the UM v MSU game went final. In fact, that final actually narrowed the gap between us and St. Cloud. Per CHN we are now exactly tied with SCSU (in RPI and therefore in PWR).by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Men’s Basketball 23-24 - 3 months ago
I don’t really agree with the posters claiming the better team lost. Cornell shot lights out, especially when it built its big lead—that just isn’t sustainable. I don’t think Cornell is vastly worse than Yale or anything, but given Yale’s size and rebounding advantage and the big shooting percentage disparity, I think Cornell was fortunate to end up with a chance to win down the stretch.by BearLover - Other Sports

upprdeck I thought mid game they said he got dinged last night and barely got off the ice? Did the Union or RPI announcers say that?by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Union, 2/10 - 3 months ago
I’m still confused why random teams like Union and Dartmouth have much more fluid motion on their PP and create so many more chances than we do. From zone entries to O-zone playmaking, why are we clearly worse at the PP than otherwise lesser teams? By the way, does anyone know why Fegaras was scratched? Did he finish last night’s game or did he get hurt?by BearLover - Hockey

upprdeck Maine blew a late lead and refused to stay out of the box in falling in OT. Merrimack helps keep UNH below us Omaha wins on IT over WMU to help a little Minn ST is now the only team over .500 in the CCHA. MSU the big game left tonight UNH is so far behind at this point that if they catch us, we have other problems. We need to root for the following teams to lose: —Michigan —by BearLover - Hockey

Re: Cornell @ Union, 2/10 - 3 months ago
Trotsky And another. This pp has been cromulent. On this PP, which indeed was improved from those prior, Cornell’s player at the blue line SHOT THE PUCK ON NET, rather than passing it endlessly around the perimeter, creating a good rebound chance and then several more good chances on the ensuing chaos. Still, there appear to be spacing issues on zone entries. Everyone is either too close to theby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Union, 2/10 - 3 months ago
Union (correctly) playing as aggressively as possible down 4 (now 3) goals and Cornell is struggling to handle it. There will be odd man chances the other way if we do manage to turn the puck up ice, though. Watching our PP is such a jarring experience because it’s been the same issues for months now. Coaching staff is content to stick with the no-movement plan, I guess?by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Union, 2/10 - 3 months ago
Cornell is getting all the calls so far this game. Thank you Gabe Seger for making the PP look less like complete crap. Still, I don’t get it—watch the Union PP from just prior—vastly more movement. It’s night and day compared to five Cornell skaters mostly standing around aside from the two defensemen at the point occasionally trading places.by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Union, 2/10 - 3 months ago
Our PP is pitiful. Can’t gain the zone cleanly, and when we do gain the zone the offense is so unsettled that by the time we cleanly possess the puck, the defense is already set up. It’s also clear this team barely practices 5x3. How about a shot fake to get the defenders moving? All we could muster was a couple of shots from outside (relatively speaking, since the defense is packed in pretty cloby BearLover - Hockey

Trotsky Teams ahead of us in PWR that we are beating in record vs common opponents right now: 2. North Dakota 7. Denver 8. Minnesota 9. Quinnipiac 10. Western Michigan 11. UMass 12. Providence Basically, we are 2-0 vs NCHC and 1-0-1 vs HE.by BearLover - Hockey

upprdeck Quin up 8 on us.. we have a game in hand.. So we need to do our thing and get it to 5. We win and they lose to Clarkson and suddenly they are in reality 1 win ahead of us with 5 left for them. More importantly, Q losing to Clarkson means we are in striking distance of them in the PWR. In the ECAC, all that really matters is first round bye + not seeing Q until the final. There isn’t mby BearLover - Hockey

upprdeck looking ahead. Prov and mass have multiple games vs Maine/BC/BU.. hope for the best there. St cloud/WMU play each other twice. Mich has one more with MSU and 2 with Minn. Every little loss helps Conn outshot Umaass tonight but couldnt pull that game out. Hope for the split tomorrow. That UConn result stings.by BearLover - Hockey

Re: Cornell @ RPI, 2/9 - 3 months ago
One thing Cornell started doing (as of at least last week, possibly prior) was put Fegaras on the first PP unit as a second D. Previously Robertson was the only D on the first PP unit I think. Not a hockey genius so someone else is going to have to explain the advantages/disadvantages of having one versus two D on the PP.by BearLover - Hockey
