NO PROBLEM... Darren was a teammate of Luc Robitaille with the LA Kings in the mid 80's... Luc was in D2: The Mighty Ducks with Emilio Estevez... Emilio was in St. Elmos Fire with Demi Moore... Demi Moore was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon. Ask me a hard one.by nshapiro - Hockey
Re: NCAA Tournament Expansion - 22 years ago
Actually, I don't know how you choose to trace lineage, but the Binghamton Rangers could be traced to the previous Rangers affiliate, the New Haven Nighthawks, rather than the Binghamton Whalers. This would bring in a Cornell connection, since both Darren Eliot and Duane Moeser played a few games for the Nighthawksby nshapiro - Hockey

No Al, The Liberty Bell Race track is Now Franklin Mills mall, a 1.6 mile nucleus (a record at the time of construction) of generic American outlet shopping, surrounded by a swarm of fast food dining establishments. Philadelphia Park is about 5 miles nw of the Liberty Bell site.by nshapiro - Hockey

Re: NCAA Games on TV in Philly Area? - 22 years ago
Sarli, I have watched games at Philadelphia Park in Bensalem, just north of Philly. They have the Direct TV sports package and are happy to tune a map one of their channels to the channel you need. You even get your own TV (abou a 6'' screen), with volume control. Admittedly, you are there with most people who care about horse racing, and some hoops fans, but who cares you get to watch and liby nshapiro - Hockey
Re: The actual GAME against Harvard - 22 years ago
I pretty much agree with Greg. Speed Kills, but I don't think that was the whole problem. I spent the whole game yelling "HIT SOMEBODY" at the TV. On practically every single Hahvahd(still sucks) rush up ice, the Cornell defense was completely passive, letting the puck handler coast into the zone along the boards, sometimes all the way around behind the goal, then come out the otherby nshapiro - Hockey
Re: 1st round: Quinnipiac - 22 years ago
I dont think so Beeeej, I am pretty sure it is 1E vs 2W, not 1E vs 2E, like USCHO brackets show...so we cant play the BU-Hahvahd(still sucks)/Maine winner until the NCAA finalby nshapiro - Hockey
Re: Quinnipiac is IN - 22 years ago
Has anyone else noticed that our first round game got WAY easier because we lost to Hahvahd (still sucks)? If we beat them, we probably would have beend 3East and would play someone imported from out west who would certainly have been more of a test than QCby nshapiro - Hockey
Re: Lake Placid TV Broadcast - 22 years ago
Scott asked: Can you still "dial up" or "point" tv satellite receivers? I was told by someone last year that the FCC somehow stopped this by forcing satellite signals to be scrambled, so that only the satellite providers could furnish the channels While it is true that more and more satellite feeds are scrambled, there is no FCC ruling dictating this. I watched the Yale QFby nshapiro - Hockey
Re: Help! Directions FROM Placid TO NJ/PA - 22 years ago
And once you are in New Brunswick, taking Rt. 1 south from South Brunswick through Princeton, to Trenton, where you can pick up I-95 into PA to get to West Chester makes sense too. Just don't be on Rt. 1 during rush hour.by nshapiro - Hockey

Re: Funky Playoff Format - 22 years ago
Thats right John....I could just imagine some assistant coach going to JTW's TBRW? site and putting in hypothetical results of beating each of the bottom half teams to determine which opponent would maximize pairwise rankings.by nshapiro - Hockey
Re: NCAA Rules - 22 years ago
Game Misconducts used to be called pretty regularly by Pierre Belanger when he was ruining the ECAC as senior official (at least the guy who did lots of finals). If any player would follow him to plead innocence, Pierre would send him off for the rest of the game.by nshapiro - Hockey

Ahhh, the passion of youth. (inserting teeth now) I remember the good old days when I used to get me self all fierd up about them high-faloootin' "causes" that seemed so danged important once-upon-a-time... I would also note the comment: "Cornell's men's hockey program may have peaked in the 1970s, when it won two national titles" Maybe they are thinking about the NY Knicks? Here is another article that has some interesting notes: I like Dartmouth referred to as "The Big Greed"... and I had no idea that the women's championship is the "2002 ECAC JPMorganChase Hockeyby nshapiro - Hockey

Maximizing Pairwise - 22 years ago
Currently, we lose 5 pairwise comparisons: BU, UNH, Maine, Mich, and MSU So, what - as far as i can tell - has to happen to make things as positive as possible: ECAC final 5: Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, Colgate, Brown Brown beats Colgate in play-in Cornell Beats Brown, then Clarkson/RPI winner. This makes Cornell 9-3 against TUCs, since Dartmouth falls out. UNH loses to BU in Hby nshapiro - Hockey

Re: NCAA - 22 years ago
Ben F, I have long advocated that the NCAA basketball tourney should seed the top half...this would mean that seeds 1-8 in each region would be chosen by the committee...the remainder should be randomly assigned. This would mean that the Northwest Southland conference champ wouldnt have to play the ACC champ every year. I know that some would complain about no regional representation...confereby nshapiro - Hockey

Re: US-Canada Women's Final (spoilers) - 22 years ago
I think what people dont realize about officiating is that nobody aspires to be an ECAC official. The refs who are good just use it as a steppingstone to the minors. I dont know if Alex Dell is still reffing any ECAC games, but he did for a few years, before he started doing AHL games. The good refs also never acquire any seniority in the ECAC, which I guess is why they never get to ref the fiby nshapiro - Hockey

Nice plug mentioning Dad captaining the Cornell Championship team....sort of makes up for the fact that Cornell didn't get mentioned with all the other schools during the womens hockey medal ceremonies. Re: joe nieuwendyk - 22 years ago
Greg, I agree with your assessment of the Fuscos....they were outstanding at the collegiate level. I don't know if this choice will bring back bad memories, but the second best player I saw for Cornell - factoring in what we thought was potential- was Gary Cullen his freshman year. It looked like he would be a superstar, but he just coasted away the last 3 years, and may have been the biggestby nshapiro - Hockey

I think PJ's Pancake house in Princeton is worth mentioning as a pre/post game meal ....especially if you like chocolate chip pancakes with whip cream. I must confess being clueless about the Chariot's corn nuggets...can anyone describe what these are? I was a regular at the Chariot, but I loved the sweet dough pizza they made....is that still unchanged?by nshapiro - Hockey
Re: joe nieuwendyk - 22 years ago
Joe was definitely the best Cornell player I have seen (since 1980). I just missed Nethery, so someone else has to do that comparison. Tredway was a great scorer, but not well rounded enough to make it in the NHL. I remember watching Joe as a Freshman... at the beginning of the season he was getting so many chances, but rarely capitalizing. Everyone was waiting for the puck to start going in,by nshapiro - Hockey
