Re: Yost Ice Arena - 18 years ago
There's good news and bad news. You're usually able to scalp. However, football's at Iowa this week, so hockey is the only major athletic event in town, and their rivalry with MSU is obviously a big one. I'll be curious to hear the evaluation of Yost from someone with no history there. Think you'll find it very similar, if quite a bit larger than Lynah. Re: Berenson Boundary - Good for the Red or Bad for the Red? - 18 years ago
Based on a couple of posts on uscho, the net impact was zilch. Flow of the game was improved, and Michigan put 53 shots on goal, but only scored 3 goals against Toronto. Posters didn't notice any increase in icing, and power play was ineffective. Having a slew of freshmen on the team may have had something to do with these results, too.by ninian '72 - Hockey
Berenson Boundary - Good for the Red or Bad for the Red? - 18 years ago
To return to discussing hockey for a change, today's Michigan Daily has an article on the proposed Berenson Boundary, a rule change that would extend the offensive zone back to the red line, once the offensive blue line has been crossed. The rule will be allowed in pre-season play on a trial basis. See: My guess is that it would benefit more offensive-minded teams, although how much remby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: hockey line forming - 18 years ago
10K is an obvious stretch, but it would be interesting to know how many students actually showed up for the stampede. If athletics actually passed out a number to each of the students who showed, regardless of Lynah's capacity, it would be a good way to measure the potential student fanbase/market for tickets that could then be used for some intelligent planning, for a change.by ninian '72 - Hockey

Same deal for Yost in Ann Arbor. Directions are good, but the map moves the rink from S. State to Washtenaw. Looks as if the star is showing some generic central point in AA. Re: How big a loss is Shane? - 18 years ago
It may also work the opposite way, in that blue-chippers see committing to top-ranked teams that lose players to the pros early as a fast track to the NHL. Rather than having to recruit lesser players to stabilize the program, these teams may be better able to recruit more of these short-timers. What this does to team chemistry is another question. Re: NHL Draft / Sasha # 14 overall - 18 years ago
More on the Caps rebuilding process from owner Ted Leonsis: Scroll down to Sasha's photo for relevant text. It's hard to know what to make of this. Sounds like they have a lot of talented young defensemen - seven first-rounders - in the system, so there may be no immediate need to move Sasha up in a hurry. OTOH, they sound as if they're eager to let their prospects duke it out to find tby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: NHL Draft / Sasha # 14 overall - 18 years ago
I think this is where the smart money is. Before the lockout, the Caps jettisoned most of their big money players and have committed to rebuilding around a talented young core that they hope will gell in a few years. Their coach Glen Hanlon was brought up from their AHL Portland ME affiliate, where he did an outstanding job developing young talent. Sasha would make a nice counterpoint to Witt. I agree with Greg, and it was clear Ted was positioning himself for either a cheaper payroll, an ability to load up on free agents or both, but damn it was painful to watch guys like Kono and Nikolishin get bled off in the process.
