Dafatone MattS Somebody want to explain to me how, if Union wins, it will help Cornell? I'm sure there is some obscure reasoning. I nominate this argument for Worst Topic. Anyone able to come up with a challenger? On the contrary, I think this is an important and highly-relevant topic. I just think their arguments are wrong.by Kyle Rose - Hockey

Jim Hyla Towerroad Trotsky Shorter poll: A. "Don't Know" B. "I have deluded myself into thinking I am competent to answer this question." It is going to be a long offseason we have to occupy ourselves somehow. I may delude myself that I am competent to answer the question but I have no allusions about this discussion having any impact on the real world of Cornell Hocby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go 2014 - 10 years ago
RobbBecause just as kids are entering college is a typical time for parents to make major, potentially risky career changes? When they graduate college would seem more likely to me. If he wants to maximize his kids' grants at a top-tier, need-blind, full-need school, he'll quit his job the year before his kids enter college. Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go 2014 - 10 years ago
Tom Lentobut I think anyone even considering removing him as head coach needs to step back from the ledge. This is why even "maybe" isn't a good fit for my response. I don't think Cornell should get rid of Schafer, because no one has identified anyone who would come into the program and do a better job. That said, "Schafer must go" and "Schafer should stay and coach exactby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: LP Games - 10 years ago
BearLoverMy point is that Cornell is devoid of any offensive talent. It has more than Union, at least according to people who have skin in the game (NHL scouts). I repeat: there is simply no evidence that a lack of talent ("the recruiting gap" ) is Cornell's problem.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go 2014 - 10 years ago
Trotsky That's what you get with Schafer. Since you can't just will an offensive juggernaut into existence, You don't need a juggernaut. When you have a top-quarter defense, all you need is a competent (read: average to good) offense with a plan to win games. We don't even have that.by Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go 2014 - 10 years ago
I said "unsure", mainly because that was the closest option of the three to how I actually feel. If it wasn't obvious from the other thread, I think Schafer is doing a (mostly) bang-up job on defense, and a lousy job on offense. I would be satisfied if he brought in a talented assistant to take control of the offense, because the last 10 years have made it abundantly clear that he's gotby Kyle Rose - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 I was frankly disappointed in the Cornell turnout. There was one small group of students. They were loud and active, but few in number. The telephone cheer was a riot. Worth the price of admission alone.by Kyle Rose - Hockey

BearLoverAll of those players were recruited multiple years ago, before Union was any good. This is a great illustration of the other problem: no matter what evidence I come up with, someone will decide it isn't good enough to refute their own pet theory. rediceUnion simply was NOT going to allow a loss and they have the talent to make it happen. I think it's more likely they had the coaching to make it happen. Union appears to have set-plays designed specifically to create scoring opportunities where the D or the goaltender is caught out of position. No, they don't work every time, but they don't have to. Re: LP Games - 10 years ago
I was not at all surprised by the outcome... but I was actually pleasantly surprised by Cornell's performance. Union was clearly the superior team going into this game, but it didn't feel like Cornell was outclassed talent-wise. The problems I saw boil down to two things: (1) Cornell made more mistakes on defense, and (2) Union created more scoring opportunities. To the second point, one thingby Kyle Rose - Hockey

ugarte Trotsky My first preference would be to try to make NYC work. The Ivies alone probably have 100k alumni in the city, there are an infinite number of attractions, it is not badly situated, and there is mass transit from everywhere to drag busloads of the little numbnuts in for a weekend of debauchery. RobbI was joking, too. The only reason it even came to mind was because you had to return to your lake house - if you'd said "dumpy apartment in Albany" instead... Point taken. Though the house is basically a pumpkin during the winter, because of how remote it is and how cold it is up there. I think I've spent a grand total of 5 winter days up there over the last 5 years. Scersk '97Actually, I found AC to have overpriced lodging, at least within walking distance of the rink. Maybe I didn't know where to look, or maybe my tolerance for fleabag has decreased over the years, but I could never find anything at all acceptable for less than $125 or so "downtown." $125 *is* cheap. Have you seen the prices in LP? I can't find a hotel for less than $230/night. Noby Kyle Rose - Hockey
Re: Lake Placid Attendance - 10 years ago
TrotskyIt's part of why I return again and again -- the nostalgia of entitlement. I understand you're joking, but there's a kernel of indictment there that I think is unjustified. The ECAC wants fans to go to this thing, but it has to deal with the same reality that (I think?) we've agreed is affecting Lynah attendance and attention: people have other choices, including TV versions of said gameby Kyle Rose - Hockey
