All-America team 2003-2004 - 20 years ago
Who will be on this year's All-America team from the East? Will Vesce, Moulson, or Cook be cited? Any rookie consideration for McKee?by billhoward - Hockey
Re: Next Cornell 30-goal scorer - 20 years ago
So there was one 20-goal scorer, in the first year of Mike Schafer's tenure (Brad Chartrand, 1996, 24G), and having gotten that out of his system, Mike's moved on. OTOH, had Vesce been healthy all season long, he would have set up Moulson (18G, 17A on the season) a couple more times, and had Cornell gotten another round or two into the playoffs, Moulson would have 23, 24, 25 goals and this diby billhoward - Hockey

One reason is the loss of Vesce, who was so key in the puck possession game through winning faceoffs, skating and passing. The other is that Schafer seems to want to really give all four forwards lines significant ice time. Moulson could always try for more breakaways. <g> Eby billhoward - Hockey

Next Cornell 30-goal scorer - 20 years ago
Wondering what are the odds Matt Moulson will score 30 goals next year? Or 25? It's been a long time since a Cornell player has gotten a goal a game. I think there's been one 25-goal season in the past decade. Not that defense isn't great, but when you're down 1-0 late in the game, who do you turn to? Maybe I got spoiled seeing Ryan Vesce put up 7 points against Princeton early in the seasonby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Hobey Hat Trick - 20 years ago
In another thread we lament the quality of ECAC hockey and how it gets no respect. It's nice to know the Ivy League portion of the ECAC in the past three years contributed three finalists to the round of 10 (Doug Murray three years ago) and two of them were finalists in the round of 3. Actually, four finalists; Chris Higgins was a finalist two years ago along with LeNeveu. So we ought to layby billhoward - Hockey

Some years the competition is tougher. If winning the Hobey was the No. 1 thing on LeNeveu's mind, he should have stuck around. Sometimes I think the awards are as much for the fans as anyone. If the ban on steroids - the steroids that no MLB slugger seems to admit to using - takes hold, a repeat of 75 home runs could take a long time. As for batting average, Tony Gwynn got to what, .394 circa 1994, but that still makes it sixty-plus years no one has hit .400. Re: LeNeveu's GAA record in jeopardy? - 20 years ago
I wonder if Howard is more than remotely aware of the all-time GAA record? Is he thinking, "Better I should lose 1-0 and get the record than win two games 3-2 and finish number two to some Ivy Leaguer?" It happens, it happens. Even Bob Beamon's 29-foot triple jump record went by the wayside eventually. Which kind of begs the question as to what existing records (sports) are least likelyby billhoward - Hockey

A couple years back, in an effort to ward off male menopause, I took the Skip Barber three-day race certification program. There is now no queston in my mind that you do more than just sit in a chair and press the gas pedal. Over time, catchers (previously, hockey goaltenders) realized it's not shameful to have adequate protection. You'll notice lacrosse helmets are changing, too. I bet Don Zimmer wishes he wore a batting helmet. There are a few old timers who believe it's a real sport only when the participant risks all. Recruiting elsewhere (not going to Cornell) - 20 years ago
Cornell seems to have done well among 6-foot-5 defensemen with reasonable SAT scores. Who else had a successful recruiting season that will cause us trouble en route to the Ivy, ECAC, and -- one can dream -- NCAA titles next year?by billhoward - Hockey
Re: If you were Phil Buttafuoco ... - 20 years ago
What could the ECAC do to better itself? (Other than stop using Cape Cod Regional HS for free Web design services?) And Cornell to help better the ECAC? Cornell could have helped the ECAC cause a year ago by winning the NCAAs. As could Harvard by having held onto its three-goal third-period lead this year in the first round.
