Re: Great Schafer Interview (Topher Scott confirmed as 2nd Assistant) - 12 years ago
I'm not suggesting there is a lot of such aid, but I refer you to the description of the Cornell Commitment program . I think these, and other programs offered elsewhere, provide benefits such as research support accounts and need-based loan replacement. A friend at Columbia had a fellowship in the sciences which offered similar benefits. Technically they may not be considered merit aid, but thby CAS - Hockey
Re: Great Schafer Interview (Topher Scott confirmed as 2nd Assistant) - 12 years ago
Think it is you who are mistaken kaelistus. There already exist some merit based scholarships at Cornell and other Ivies. I also have no problem with Cornell alumni funding superior financial aid for a relatively small number of students who are most valuable to the university. We're trying to attract the best kids in the country, some who are also considering Harvard and MIT.by CAS - Hockey
Re: Great Schafer Interview (Topher Scott confirmed as 2nd Assistant) - 12 years ago
The matching policy applies to ALL students. Athletes "don't get more of a free ride." The match applies as well to those also admitted to MIT, which is not known for its athletic success. Cornell exists to train poets and dairy farmers. And to develop a successful hockey program that all current students, staff, townies, and alums can support. I wouldn't minimize the benefits of aby CAS - Hockey
Re: Great Schafer Interview (Topher Scott confirmed as 2nd Assistant) - 12 years ago
I do believe this enhancement in financial aid, which is designed to match other Ivies, is essentially alumni funded. Again, it is incremental to the existing aid budget. It is not hurting ANY other aid recipients. It is already helping athletics , which I and many others do care about. It also helps Cornell enroll a superior academic class. It gives us the best chance to win, for botby CAS - Hockey

If we want to compete for the best , I believe it is necessary. We are just trying to compete on an equal financial playing field.by CAS - Hockey
Re: Great Schafer Interview (Topher Scott confirmed as 2nd Assistant) - 12 years ago
The former is great too. Matching awards of other Ivies helps some students and disadvantages no one. It is additive to Cornell's financial aid budget. Please remember to sign your gift checks to Cornell.by CAS - Hockey

Re: Cornell Football -- The Future Starts Now - 13 years ago
Don't know why, with an excellent coach and competitive financial aid, we can't win in football. We're been very successful in lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, and now basketball. Sure it will take a few recruiting classes, but think Big Red football under Coach Austin will be back. And it will be fun to watch.by CAS - Other Sports

Re: Cu - 0 Yale - 6 after two - 13 years ago
I believe that with our newly competitive financial aid policy, we will attract the players we need to win. Andy Noel's letter in the spring Spirit Magazine is very encouraging for all our athletic programs . Winning more recruiting battles should lead to winning more titles. We have an oustanding class coming in. In Schafer I trust!by CAS - Hockey
Re: Cu - 0 Yale - ECAC finals (postgame) - 13 years ago
I do think in recent years Cornell has lost some recruits to other Ivies which have had more generous financial aid policies. However, and most importantly, this has now changed. We are currently matching the financial aid awards of other Ivies. Again, we have some outstanding players coming who I can't wait to see at Lynah.by CAS - Hockey
Re: Cu - 0 Yale - ECAC finals (postgame) - 13 years ago
Not sure why anyone would not credit Schafer with the 1996 and 1997 ECAC championships. Yes he didn't recruit those players. However, the prior coach suffered thru 3 consecutive losing seasons with these very players.by CAS - Hockey
