Re: Goalie Recruit For This Fall (Omar Kanji) - 15 years ago
Looks like some people here are keeping up on their Malcolm Gladwell readings. You betcha. Only merit based in relation to the arbitrary break point in the year. If a youth league or school system divides its levels using August to July, the kids born in August and September have the advantage. Exactly. If the difference between making the All-Star team at the age of eight and subsequentlby mnagowski - Hockey

High level athletics really is about as close to meritocracy as you'll find in America. That's why so many hockey players were born in January and February. If he can stop the puck, I don't care if the guy's the bacterium Yersinia pestis. I imagine most of the spectators in Lynah would think otherwise.by mnagowski - Hockey

Toronto Star May 5 article: Two thoughts: 1) This kid is a lot smarter and/or hits the books a lot harder than the rest of the 'all-stars' listed. Good for him. 2) If I can infer as much from his surname, does anybody else find it refreshing that there will be a little bit more diversity in the program?by mnagowski - Hockey

Re: "Off the Crossbar" today - 15 years ago
I would Hardly consider all of tompkins county the ithaca metropolitan area. *shrugs* The U.S Census makes the definition, not me. Apparently a metro area requires 50,000 residents in the 'urbanized core'. The main point, though, was to suggest that Albany isn't in decline -- at least from a population perspective. I find it to be a perfectly viable small city with plenty of amenities. And aby mnagowski - Hockey

The Cornell Club of Greater Buffalo invites you to cheer on the Big Red as the Men's Hockey Team skates in the NCAA Tournament in their march towards the Frozen Four. We have confirmed a viewing location that will dedicate a live feed of the broadcast for those of us who prefer our March Madness on the ice rather than in the gymnasium. Re: Cornell-Yale ECAC championship postgame - 15 years ago
I really think Coach needs to rethink his philosophy on PP. During the game I had just observed to my friends that they need to stop passing so much around the perimeter and especially focus on more play at the net and less one-timers, most of which were blocked or way off net. Working inside would take better advantage of our size against Yale. Then the cameras cut to a brief interview with Coacby mnagowski - Hockey

Re: CU @ Duke lax - 15 years ago
It still rubs me wrong that Duke (the institution) was given a do-over by the NCAA and a chance to get a national title was handed to them on a silver platter --I was fine with giving players back lost eligibility time, but that should have been only if they used it at a different school. Thankfully, though, they will never have to worry about an asterisk after their name, as they never ended uby mnagowski - Other Sports

you mean something normal like where ESPN reports the leagues scores a-z except for the Ivy which comes after the Horizon League but the Independent teams come before it. To be clear, 'it' refers to the Horizon League, in that ESPN first lists the Independents, then the Horizon League, then the Ancient Eight.by mnagowski - Hockey
Re: Cornell 3 Brown 2 Postgame Thread - 15 years ago
For the last four years, at least, the playoffs have not fallen on the first weekend of break. Usually ECAC's are that weekend. You may be surprised to take a look at last year's calendar, then. The quarterfinals were played at Union on the 14th and 15th of March, while spring break technically started on Saturday, the 15th of March (and of course we all know that it started a bit earlier in maby mnagowski - Hockey

Re: Hydraulic Lab - 15 years ago
I suspect any sort of excavation of the ruins will likely be very costly due to the remoteness of the location. Absent any sort of environmental concern a la the Gun Factory, don't expect the site to be cleaned up. According to the Ithaca Journal, the site was once considered for remediation in the early 90s -- an alumni reception center would have been built. Vesce had a rather tepid -1 game in Buffalo tonight, but Douglas Murray enjoyed +2 and had an absolutely monstrous hit on Daniel Paille in the second. I had forgotten to wear my Cornell gear (save for my scarf), but I did notice one Sharks fan in the 100s wearing a Cornell t-shirt. Re: Important message to ice hockey ticket holders - 15 years ago
It would be great if these 'free' facilities were actually ever available, especially during the winter months when Ithaca' outdoor activities are generally not accessible. Barton is used for indoor track, intramural basketball, and military maneuvers. Teagle and Helen Newman have pool hours for only 6 hours a day and only 90 minutes per day after normal classes end at 4.10 for a population of 34by mnagowski - Hockey
Re: Important message to ice hockey ticket holders - 15 years ago
The Phys Ed department is a joke as they charge student between 50$-250$ just to take 1 of 2 required gym classes. Meaning a student who must pay the student activity fee, wants hockey season tickets, and a gym membership for 4 years is already 2500$ in the hole compared to a marginal cost at a comparable Ivy. Last time I checked the PE department offered numerous courses for free, most of theby mnagowski - Hockey
