Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: "Fighting Sioux" nickname may [not] [may too] stick at N Dakota - 12 years ago
NCAA says it will make North Dakota forfeit any postseason games in which the nickname or logo is used by the team, band or cheerleaders. This, and the inability to host a postseason game, could be a very big deal for the women's hockey team.by Weder - Hockey

Re: Cornell Women's Ice Hockey: February 2012 - 12 years ago
So, the SID notes say that Saturday's game "will be the final regular-season contest for seniors Rebecca Johnston, Chelsea Karpenko, Amanda Mazzotta, Kendice Ogilvie, Catherine White and Amanda Young." Does this mean that Erin Barley-Maloney (and perhaps Jenna Paulson) are planning to be back next year?by Weder - Hockey
Re: Hockey Advisers - 12 years ago
Al DeFlorio Kyle Rose css228Pretty certain they do. Doesn't matter if your an athlete or not, but it may come up more in athlete's cases because they might be a bit more likely to get an offer from HYP than your average student Ding! Ding! Ding! You're a winner! This is part of why I say it's a smokescreen: it looks equitable on paper, but in reality its application skews toward athletes. Lotta &by Weder - Hockey

Ben What complicates it is that he didn't announce his absence or the reason for it in advance. That's disrespectful and took the spotlight away from his team, which was where it belonged. I thought the Bruins GM said he had known for several months that Thomas was going to skip the event. Or did you mean that Thomas didn't make a public announcement about his decision?by Weder - Hockey

Re: Not a goal? - 12 years ago
For those who aren't clear about the "intent" thing, this is from the NCAA rulebook: "As there is a human factor involved in blowing the whistle to stop play, the referee may intend for the play to be stopped slightly before the whistle actually being blown. For example, the fact that the puck may come loose or cross the goal line before the sound of the whistle has no bearing iby Weder - Hockey

Douglas Murray on hits to the head: "I never target someone's head. It's such a dumb play, anyway, because you'd be going after such a small target when you have the whole rest of the body there. It makes no sense." I like the way he thinks.by Weder - Hockey
Re: Women vs Syracuse - 12 years ago
I don't think Cook has played since the opener, but Barley-Maloney played for the first time tonight. Hard to tell too much from the RedCast video, but she seems like a solid player. I don't think Paulson has played yet this year. As for next weekend, Harvard also will be without its coach and several players, who are on the U.S. roster for the 4 Nations. When both teams are at full strength iby Weder - Hockey
Re: CU Women 9, Yale 0 - 12 years ago
Ben This weekend's results would suggest that Wisconsin and BU are not in the same tier. 3-0 and 6-1 to the Badgers. Though you'd expect that the games would've been closer if Poulin had played for BU. From what I've read, she's not expected to be back until after the BU-Cornell games next month. Which, in some ways, is too bad.by Weder - Hockey
Re: Women vs. Brown - 12 years ago
Al DeFlorio I'm still puzzled by the team's lack of depth. They're skating three lines and five defensemen. Last year, when several players were with the Canadian team, they had only ten or eleven skaters. Five of the fourteen skaters dressed today will graduate next spring, and there are only eighteen skaters on the roster. They'll get Hompe (F) back when soccer season ends, and I wonder ifby Weder - Hockey

Re: CU Women's Hockey-Preseason - 12 years ago
Ben Weder Looks like there will be audio of this weekend's games, and possibly more this season. Appears to be free and separate from Redcast. All three of this weekend's games (the two women's games and the men against Mercyhurst) are at Lynah, so there should be RedCast video for all of them. Yes, I should have clarified that. It'll be nice if the audio and video are in synch. Or if Redcby Weder - Hockey

Re: Syracuse to the ACC - 12 years ago
Swampy Another story on Syracuse going to the ACC in Laxpower. There's a bit of pretentiousness in some of the statements by SU officials. One is the statement from SU's Chancellor and President, Nancy Cantor, who said, "We are pleased that Syracuse adds a New York City dimension to the ACC." It's a safe bet her appointment is not in the Geography Department. Another is athleticsby Weder - Other Sports

Jim Hyla Trotsky David Harding Brandon Thomas comments in the Ithaca Journal on the drafting of Cornell recruits.Informative and entertaining, as is typical of Thomas' stuff.Agree, he's the best IJ hockey writer we've had in a long time. kaelistus Maybe I was wrong and Cornell isn't the school I thought it was... When I was there it was drilled to me that Cornell does not give out any merit based scholarships. Once you got in you are equal. Maybe things changed. In which case, I guess that saves me a couple hundred bucks a year. Re: Men's Basketball Announces Class of 2015 - 12 years ago
David Harding I thought that Ivy League rules prohibited coaches from commenting on individual recruits until they had actually enrolled. I think coaches can talk about incoming players once their tuition deposits have been received by the university. All of the various recruiting announcements made by Cornell in the last week or so have comments from coaches about the players.by Weder - Other Sports

ugarte Chris '03 Yikes: Fuckin' A. It means nothing if it doesn't translate to the field but... I like it. The facilities section of the site mentions a new video board at Schoellkopf. I wonder if this means that better video feeds will be available for football and lacrosse on Redcast.
