Cornell Women's Ice Hockey: February 2012

The whole-year thread on Cornell Women's Ice Hockey has become unwieldy. I propose monthly threads like the Alumni in the Pros threads.

To kick off February, here's the [www.cornellbigred.com] preview of the upcoming weekend games against RPI and Union at home.

The preview says the Tuesday game against Mercyhurst will be televised. Does anyone know details?

Yes, this is much better, I think, though we'll only have February and March to worry about.

Any chance this team loses one of its next four games? RPI, Union, Yale and Brown are all ranked in the bottom five of the conference. Beating Clarkson and St. Lawrence at the end of the month before ECAC QFinals will be a nice way to close out, but by then the league title should be locked up.

Mazz or Slebodnick tonight? Any word on Mazz's injury?

Yes, it's listed on my local channel guide. I put it on the TV thread. Now do I go down to CU, or stay with family and veg here? It's one of a few women's games I could see live.

Honey Badger don't care. Saulnier and Leck each score within nineteen seconds of each other, 4-0 end 2nd.

It's about attitude. Saulnier showed from very early on that she doesn't care who is on the other side of the ice. The five-minute major for nailing that Syracuse player was probably the best example.

'Honey Badger' is definitely not risque enough for a Bond girl.

Seattle Sounders fans use it for one of their defensive midfielders (and I think it's been used by fans of other teams as well). I thought that Saulnier fit the personality type, so I'm going to use it.

The Yale game today was a complete mismatch. The Yale goal was a soft goal, but all it meant was that it cost us the shutout. I believe the final SOG was 53-9. It was like we were on the PP the entire game. From talking to some people in the stands, Mazz has an injury which might keep her out the rest of the season.

So, the SID notes say that Saturday's game "will be the final regular-season contest for seniors Rebecca Johnston, Chelsea Karpenko, Amanda Mazzotta, Kendice Ogilvie, Catherine White and Amanda Young."

Does this mean that Erin Barley-Maloney (and perhaps Jenna Paulson) are planning to be back next year?

Paulson hasn't played a single game, and Barley-Maloney only played two years at UVM, so both should have one year of eligibility left. I don't know what's become of Paulson, though.

Ohio State leading Wisconsin 3-0 after one. First goal on a shot from the blue line that may have hit a defenseman's stick and wobbled. Wisco controlling play but sloppy defensive play led to the second and third Buckeye goals.

Edit: Now 3-1 with 13 min to go.

Getting dicey now. 3-1 with 4:34 to go and Cornell two-women down. SLU goalie may be pulled after time-out to make it 6x3.

Quick goal, 3-2. Now just one skater down with 50 sec on penalty. 4 min to go

3-2 with 1:12 to go; empty SLU net

3-2 final

There's always a little bit of pushing and shoving when teams crash the net, but the refs let it get out of control before they clamped down with those penalties.

Four CU nominees for Patty Kazmaier Award.

Senior Rebecca Johnston, juniors Laura Fortino and Lauriane Rougeau and sophomore Brianne Jenner all made the cut to the final 30 student-athletes.

4/30 ain't bad.

Fortino and Rougeau...were two of just five defensemen to make the cut

And I like this.

The Big Red's four Patty Kazmaier nominees will have a chance to bolster their résumés this weekend with an ECAC Hockey Tournament Quarterfinal series against Brown.

Here's more info from the ECAC release, which lists all 30. 8 from ECAC, so we got half.

The 34 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey head coaches will select the top-10 finalists from among the group of 30 nominees, with the announcement taking place on March 1. A 13-member selection committee will choose the three finalists (announced March 8), as well as the award recipient, which will be announced live at the brunch ceremony in Duluth on March 17.

I dunno... nothing against Jenner, but Babstock had almost as many points and did it with a far worse supporting cast. There aren't any really comparable challengers to Saulnier this year, unless they wanted to give it to the goalie from St. Lawrence.

CU wins game 1, 4-2. Two goals from Johnston, one from Barley-Maloney, one from White. Tough second period and first part of the third, but we saw this last year as well when they had to come back from a goal down in the final minute of the playoff opener to win in OT against RPI.

I can't find an explicit statement of the location of the NCAA quarterfinal games. Is it the home of the higher seeded team? Last year Cornell played Dartmouth at Lynah, so that seems plausible. The NCAA site touts the Frozen Four and the ECAC site doesn't care about the NCAA. Cornell doesn't have it on the schedule at all.

Not on the ECAC website. Also no information on whether the men's semifinals and final game will be on TV and which cable station. Lame. Very lame.

Apparently ECAC Women's Tournament games will be on redcast like every other game, at least according to the Cornell release. So that will be fun to watch online if you can't go in person.

Thanks. That release is new since I posted the question, and there had been no links for the games on wonderful RedCast.

I don't get RedCast (since I'm still a student there's no need), but from what I've heard from all of you RedCast hardly sounds "fun."

It's pretty pathetic that I've got to be the one to post this, but the women won the ECAC semifinals today at Lynah, 5-1 over Quinnipiac. Harvard faces St. Lawrence at 7pm to determine our opponent in the finals.

Johnston goes 2-3-5. The first period had a lot of penalties, and CU only really dominated on the PK early on. QU's goalie Vigilanti (sp?) made some impressive saves, but was also lucky as she was caught out of the net often as we missed some good early chances. Johnston's first goal was a tip off a big slapshot from Amanda Young. CU controlled much of the 2nd, but QU was able to tie it at 1. That seemed to ignite the Red, as Johnston answered right back, and CU got went up 3-1 with under 40 seconds left in the 2nd. The 3rd was all CU. The "Triple-J" line (Johnston, Jenner, and Jillian Saulnier) is amazing.

A fact from the game write-up: Cornell is now .500 all-time, moving its lifetime record to 450-450-50.

What an opportunity to become a winning program in a Championship game. Let's Go Red!

I made a spreadsheet of every season's records since the program began (working on goal totals as well), and unless I messed something up, we're 453-450-50. There may be some games from the early days that they're not counting, but I'm not sure which ones those would be.

That's not terribly surprising, given the lackadaisical nature of early record-keeping. I remember there was a discrepancy between the "official" records from the University and Trotsky's TBRW records when the Men's program got their 1000th all-time win.

Bonus Hockey at Lynah. At the end of regulation, still tied at 1 apiece. Harvard had a PP with 3 min left in the 3rd and couldn't capitalize.

Gophers 2-0 up on UND after one period. Elsewhere, Mercyhurst beat Syracuse 4-3 and Robert Morris won 3-2 over Niagara to set up the CHA final tomorrow.

BU plays BC and Providence takes on Northeastern in the HEA tournament semifinals tomorrow.

Pretty crazy game between SLU and Harvard. Harvard had the better of the play in general, and had several good scoring opportunities in overtime. SLU benefitted from good goaltending, feisty (but not pretty) defense, sloppy play, and (in no small measure) luck. The winning goal was a cunning, perfectly placed backhander, taking advantage of a slight moment of hesitation by H goalie Bellamy. SLU is playing with nothing to lose tomorrow, but I don't think they'll be able to get past this Red team. SLU's cloggy team defense was reminiscent of Quinnipiac's against Cornell today, which caused the Red frustration for a while but ultimately they were able to make the right adjustments. I think any hope of SLU pulling off the upset tomorrow rides on the performance of their netminder.

There was 30-40 SLU fans and maybe 20 Harvard fans.

Our band showed up for overtime and then played when the "Saints Come Marching In" after the game just to annoy Harvard. I would have preferred that Harvard won though so that we could be the ones to eliminate them.

Digit Murphy, former Brown head coach and Cornell Alum, was doing the commentary for the game and she noted that "the Dunbar Guys" were in the crowd. So apparently there was indeed quite a mix of fans. I hope they all come back today and bring a friend or two.

Digit was fantastically entertaining. Given the incredibly low caliber of broadcast ability to come out of the jock club in general and women's hockey (cough Cammie Granato cough) in particular, it was wonderful to listen to her.

On the air for NBC she couldn't say enough good things about Teams USA and Canada. History would be kinder if Cammi Granato was a flavor at Ben & Jerry's.
