Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Section G - 21 years ago
Try coming up with another approach. "Townies up" is one of the stupider and ruder things I've heard in Lynah, and I've heard some really rude stuff. "Stand up" would work pretty well without insulting anyone, and would cover everyone at Lynah. Anyway, the question is whether people's view is really being blocked. The fans in Section H have as much right to enjoy the game aby mha - Hockey
Re: game chat? - 21 years ago
Use the warped.net IRC network, though Chicago's server seems to be disconnected. Try boston.ma.us.warped.net as your IRC server and go into #lynah.by mha - Hockey
Sports Marketing - 21 years ago
Jason, "Cornell Sports Marketing" was a business venture, a division of Host Communications, a.k.a. USA Sports, that was intended to provide a central point of coordination for marketing Cornell Athletics. Scott Malaga '89 was the first general manager. CSM was responsible for arranging broadcasts, for promoting ticket sales, for setting up the "Coaches Corner" radio talk shoby mha - Hockey
Re: Professionalism... - 21 years ago
The trouble with that outlook, Jason, is that it ignores the fact that Athletics already has a real contract with a real broadcast operation to deliver an audio performance of Cornell Athletics events to listeners. WVBR set the bar back in 1997 when it implemented streaming online audio for its coverage of Big Red Football. WVBR knew it could do this, and knew it should, even though it cost seveby mha - Hockey
Re: Providence Friars and USCHO story - 21 years ago
OK. I think I owe you a basket of corn nuggets anyway. Even if they lose every single game for the rest of the season, I'll remain impressed with their 7-0 start.by mha - Hockey
Re: Providence Friars and USCHO story - 21 years ago
A 7-0 start is nothing to sneeze at, no matter who the opponents were. Over the last couple of years we've seen that either team can win on any given night -- and we've come out on both sides of that.by mha - Hockey
Re: Webcast fee - 21 years ago
I think Age was commenting on your misspelling of "Macintosh." Yes, RealOne works on Mac OS X, though it's only in beta. I suspect that's one of the reasons the service has been so flaky for me. In other words, it's not really a cross-platform product yet.by mha - Hockey
Why and how much? - 21 years ago
The Cornell College Sports Pass through RealNetworks is $6.95 per month, or $18.95 for three months. As far as I can tell from combining all of the contradictory info I've heard, Cornell went with a commercial service primarily so they could provide Internet feeds of all four primary sports (the four that have season-long radio coverage) without having to go to the equipment and staff expenses oby mha - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Ohio State, November 1 - 21 years ago
I wondered... How much money is needed for an away weekend? According to an inside source, last year's Capital District weekend cost the Pep Band $2335... or at least that's what was budgeted for that road trip. Now we know.by mha - Hockey
Ithaca Journal coverage - 21 years ago
Today's Journal has an in-depth "Hockey Preview" package on the front page of the sports section. (Which, thanks to their odd format, is page 4B.) Chris Feaver has some good info on the team and where they're coming from (i.e. last season).by mha - Hockey

Re: donation to Cornell athletics vs Cornell Hockey Assoc. membership - 21 years ago
I've just confirmed that donations to the Cornell Hockey Association are tax-deductible, and since they're processed through the University Gift Records office, they even count for your giving credit for your class, college, etc. It's important to note that membership dues are not donations. You can send a separate donation/gift along with your dues payment, and that separate portion will be taxby mha - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard Photo - 21 years ago
It's not that bad when turned off, no. The lower ad panels are vertical-blinds-style rotating ads, and the panels don't fit properly. In other words, even on the very first night of use, the panels didn't settle squarely into place to show the ad properly. They came close, but that should be what happens after months of use. No matter; the ads are small and badly designed, considering they're bby mha - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
I like the idea of the "tasteless response," but I bet all it would take would be for people to start shouting "Up the ice!" when that's displayed on the scoreboard. (The phrase "Tearing up the ice" is split in two... "Tearing" and "Up the ice!"... yep, capitalized.) So shall we give it a shot? "Up the ice!" I hope they got the thingby mha - Hockey
Re: The New Radio Guy - 21 years ago
How would Adam know when you lived near Princeton? But yes, Adam was a play-by-play announcer for Princeton hockey from 1993-97. Does that fit?by mha - Hockey
New member of the Lynah Faithful - 22 years ago
Congratulations to assistant coach Brent Brekke, his wife Stacey, and their daughter Bailey on the arrival of one more Brekke... Cody Brent Brekke, born Saturday evening at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and 20 inches long. Have a look at the latest member of Cornell's hockey family!by mha - Hockey
Re: 2002-03 student ticket sales procedure announced - 22 years ago
Anyone who'd care to comment on the record for a 14850 Sports article I'm working on, please feel free to drop me a note at sports@14850.com. I'm interested in reactions to this year's policy, reminiscences about past policies including the ritual of "sleeping out" for tickets.by mha - Hockey
2002-03 student ticket sales procedure announced - 22 years ago
Cornell has just announced a two-stage process for students to buy and select season hockey tickets for the 2002-03 season. It'll take place on September 21st (when line numbers will be issued and payments will be collected) and September 22nd (when seats may be selected and tickets will be distributed). Discuss.by mha - Hockey

"Abbott saves Wildcats" is the headline of the local coverage, which clearly recognized it wasn't a cakewalk for the #1-ranked team.by mha - Hockey
Re: A Newman-Potter Thread - 22 years ago
Damn, and I left my Newman-Potter scorecard back in Ithaca. So Robb, what are you doing up so early? We're heading down to brunch at the Crowne Plaza before going to watch the early game.by mha - Hockey
Re: CU - UNH - 22 years ago
Nah, now that all the octogenarian Greeks have left their big reception in the ballroom downstairs, it's just Age and me. HURRY!by mha - Hockey
Re: What is it going to take??? - 22 years ago
Yep, I'm sure a liberal sprinkling of money would ensure that at least THAT Pep Band conductor would never again call upon the band to play "Macho Man." Of course, if you're ready to plunk down lots of change, you could endow the "Ben Doyle '03 Big Red Pep Band" on the condition that they never play it again under any circumstances! I'd pitch in a buck or three...by mha - Hockey
Re: Saturday radio - 22 years ago
True, in the afternoon, 870 AM carries pretty far. Especially when you consider how tough it is to get it in certain parts of Ithaca! (Lynah Rink, for example.) I remember listening to much more of a football game than I expected to be able to, on the way to Scranton one Saturday afternoon.by mha - Hockey
Re: Saturday radio - 22 years ago
The games are Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. 3:30 pm on Saturday in the first round. Odds are, the only radio coverage you'll find will be in the towns where there are teams participating. You're unlikely to find any coverage before you reach Ithaca, where the games will be on WHCU, 870 AM.by mha - Hockey
Re: Set Your VCRs -- East Regional on TV - 22 years ago
Since Time Warner Cable in Ithaca recently added the YES Network to their lineup, Sunday's second-round game will be on that channel (74) rather than carried specially on channel 77.by mha - Hockey
Re: **Tix Available Thru CU** - 22 years ago
It's frustrating, but this time I don't think it's really the ticket office's fault. They honestly didn't have any way of knowing how many tickets they'd have available, and I think the RIGHT thing for them to do was to say so... and to say if we wanted to be sure of getting tickets, we should call TicketMaster right away.by mha - Hockey
Re: traveling solo? - 22 years ago
Actually, no, the band was among the folks the ticket office said would be taking up a bunch of the available tickets. So someone's expecting the band to go!by mha - Hockey
Re: NCAA Games on TV? - 22 years ago
I understand that Time Warner Cable is working on getting the rights to televise whatever games they can in Ithaca.by mha - Hockey
Anyone have Quinnipiac/Mercyhurst game recorded? - 22 years ago
If anyone recorded the Quinnipiac/Mercyhurst MAAC championship game from Saturday, please contact me privately. I'd be very interested in seeing it.by mha - Hockey
